The Implementation of the Swedish Government's Action Plan on Business and Human Rights: : A Comparative Study of Two Swedish Companies

No full text
This essay examines the implementation of the Swedish government's Action Plan on Business and Human Rights by two Swedish companies. The study is conducted using a qualitative method in combination with a comparative approach. The data analyzed consists of the UN's Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, the Swedish government's Action Plan on Business and Human Rights from 2015, and the Swedish legal framework on business including human rights in there sustainability report. The study also looks at the government's follow-up of the Action Plan to determine if the measures taken had any effect. The study does not take into account any new developments in the issue presented by the current government. The study finds that the two companies have implemented some of the recommendations made in the Action Plan, but not all. The analysis shows that the companies' reporting on human rights is inadequate and not in line with the Action Plan's requirements. The study concludes that more needs to be done by companies to ensure the respect for human rights and the implementation of the Action Plan

Climate Colonialism

No full text
Climate colonialism is a form of neo-colonialism that turns climate actions into colonial behaviour, this is especially true when the focus is on indigenous peoples. The republic of Marshall Islands is under threat of disappearing because of climate change and even though they want to fight it the United States prefer that they be removed from their homelands. In the Oaxaca region of Mexico, the native population are manipulated or forced to move from their lands because of the growing wind power industry and in Sweden the state has given a questionable greenlight to a company to start building a mine in the middle of the sami-landscape. This thesis argues that all these situations are a form of climate colonialism and follows the theory of neo-colonialism to understand how climate colonialism functions

Are Swedish migration authorities governed by heteronormative and stereotypical beliefs? : A queer theoretical study of Swedish migration authorities' credibility assessments

No full text
The aim of this study is to investigate which factors the Swedish migration authorities consider to be credible in the asylum narratives of those who have invoked sexual orientation as ground for asylum. Based on a qualitative content analysis, a thematic approach and with a queer theoretical perspective, the study also aims to find potential underlying patterns that may indicate heteronormative or stereotypical beliefs in the migration authorities. This is analyzed based on six court cases where asylum seekers invoked sexual orientation as ground for asylum. The results of the study show that the Swedish migration authorities assess the credibility and reliability of the asylum seeker's story based on the detail of the story and the person's deep reflections. Furthermore, it is noted that the migration authorities would like to see that these reflections are based on negative emotions such as fear, shame and stigma about one's sexual orientation. With a queer theoretical application to the results, the study concludes that there are tendencies of heteronormative and stereotypical notions in the migration authority's credibility assessments.

The shadow pandemic : a feminist institutional perspective on civil society's work on gender-based violence in post COVID -19 South Africa

No full text
This field study is a thematic and feminist institutionalist analysis on how the civil society and grassroot activists in Gauteng province, South Africa, has been affected and mitigated during and after the COVID -19 pandemic in their work against gender-based violence. The data consist of five semi structured interviews with primary sources, divided in the two sub-groups of activists and formal NGO representatives. The study presents civil society and activist viewpoints on adaptation, feminist movement building as well as shrinking space and crisis within crisis. This qualitative study is a thematic analysis linked to the theoretical framework of feminist institutionalism in the context of South Africa. The results reflect issues of representation, power balances linked to organizational status, accountability, transparency, and democracy. Conclusion of this study is that need for adaptation and to mitigate the crisis within crisis (GBV and COVID -19 pandemic) is predominant for all stakeholders, but the viewpoints on how the pandemic affected the cooperation within the civil society sector varies between the two subgroups. The formal NGO’s viewpoint in this study is that the pandemic strengthened the cooperation within civil society and with institutions. However, the grassroot activist group’s perspective is that the pandemic created a split within the feminist movement. Shrinking democratic space is evidently affecting the grassroot activist group to a larger extent. The formal NGO group articulates an improved dialogue and cooperation with institutions and an enhanced political will to address gender-based violence. All stakeholders that were interviewed in this study articulates that the context with new emerging crises, such as power-poverty, inflation and food shortage are challenging the possibilities to address the “shadow pandemic” of gender-based violence which is still a predominant human rights and democratic crisis in South Africa. This study contributes to the context analysis around implementation of the national strategic plan on gender-based violence and femicide and informs on challenges on feminist institutionalism in post-pandemic South Africa

The new map : A study of how Free Churches navigate in a society characterized by religious and cultural diversity

No full text
The purpose of this study is, in the light of ”The New Map” faced by three Free Churches in Sweden and how these denominations at the national level reflect on and deal with challenges and the opportunities which arise in a society characterized by religious and cultural diversity. The study focuses mainly on the self-awareness that emerges, based on an ecclesiological perspective. The work on this study began by asking one person from each denomination for participation in a semi-structured interview. The informants' names were found on therespective website where it was obvious that they in their employment duties came into contact with questions regarding multicultural congregations. The study's empirical basis has 3 been created and collected during six individual interviews on two occasions with each informant and texts formulated by each denomination based on the study's theme. The study shows that issues of both unity and at the same time preserved originality are inseparable in these multicultural congregations and that their contribution to society in abroad sense is striking. In these congregations, amidst the diversity, there is a common central point – Jesus – that needs to be experienced again and again. At the same time, it must be said that there are many challenges, some of which may require the congregations to just have to learn to live with. Taking this stance is not about giving up, but a kind of compromise, even if the aspiration never ends, to function as well as possible in amulticultural congregation. Indeed, the local congregations need various types of relevant support from the related national denominations

No full text

Holding the keys : A study concerning the pastor ́s role as a keyperson inrelation to issues dealing with green transition within the Uniting church of Sweden

No full text
This essay examines the degree to which pastors within the Uniting church of Sweden (Equmeniakyrkan) feel that they possess authority within the context of their ministries and in what way they find opportunities to influence people to green transition. The method used to study this is a combined study, comprising a survey and a couple of follow-up interviews. The results of the study show that the majority of the pastors believe that it is important to work with issues related to green transition, but that the majority at the same time show doubts about being concrete and precise about these matters. The result could indicate an uncertainty regarding one's own authority to guide individuals to concrete lifestyle changes and ethical stances. The pastor can thus be understood as a “key person” in his context; a person entrusted with authority and "keys". The survey shows that the pastors prefer to use their keys to open, but seldom to close or “lock tight”, in the sense of stipulating what a person should or should not do
