Aim and research questions The aim of this study was to investigate how students experience their school’s changing room and whatinfluences this experience. The purpose of the study was thus to problematize previous research results regarding the experience of the changing situation linked to performance within the school subject and to beable to propose measures based on the understanding these results generate. Based on this aim, the following research questions were formulated: "How do high-achieving and low-achieving students experience the changing situation?" and "Which factors do high-achieving and low-achieving students think influence thesituation?". Theory and method The study was carried out in the form of a comparative survey with six respondents from an upper secondaryschool in inner city Stockholm. These were divided into two student groups based on high/low attendance,high/low grades and previous sports background. The material was created through qualitative interviews of areflexive and semi-structured nature, then transcribed using orthographic and finally analyzed with inspirationfrom qualitative and thematic content analysis. The theoretical framework for the analysis was rooted instructuralist, poststructuralist and poststructuralist feminist theorizing inspired by, among others, Pierre Bourdieu, Michel Foucault, Jean-Paul Sartre and Jean Baudrillard. Results Common to the students in both groups is that they do not use the school's showers and also to some extentavoid the school's changing rooms. The context surrounding both showering and changing is experienced asmore or less uncomfortable, abnormal and exposing. The social context, group nudity and one's own body in theeyes of others are seen as central factors. Lack of time, scheduling and the need to bring a towel are also said tohave an effect. The experiences of the two student groups only seem to differ from each other to a certain extent. The high-achieving students see the school subject as something positive, see the physical space as deficient anddesire changes in the schedule to a greater degree. The low-achieving students seem to see the towel as aproblem to a greater extent. Conclusions The most common reason for avoiding showering or changing appears to be about what is considered normal, rather than perceived discomfort due to nudity. However, the students who have more experience of sportsactivities outside school seem to be more comfortable with both changing and nudity in a group, something thatis explained by habitus and symbolic capital. However, nudity and exposure are central factors for somestudents. The experience that the body as both object and subject does not live up to the expected requirements, together with an experience of surveillance and judgmental looks, creates a coating of guilt and shame ononeself. An association between high absenteeism, low grades, a negative attitude towards the school subjectand discomfort linked to the changing room is partially contradicted by this study. Rather, it is the experience ofnormality in the context that influences the choice to use the shower and changing rooms or not, regardless of attendance, grade or attitude

Just Dance. Aim The aim is to investigate the teacher’s working method of teaching dance in secondary school. The study will take a comparative approach and compare teachers in Sweden and Australia. The present paper seeks to answer the following research questions: • How do teachers in Sweden and Australia talk about the core content of dance? • How do teachers in Sweden and Australia talk about how they teach dance? • What challenges and opportunities regarding dance teaching do teachers in Sweden and Australia talk about? Method A qualitative approach is used by interviewing four physical education teachers from Australia and four physical education teachers from Sweden. We analyse the interviews through thematic analysis in six steps (Braun & Clarke 2006). The result is analysed by using the frame factor theory (Sundberg, 2021). Results The dance content offers pupils to practise physical abilities such as balance, coordination and motor skills as well as social abilities such as teamwork. The dance content mirrors the mainstream influences in society such as Just Dance. The objective view of movements is more common than the subjective view. There is an initial resistance from pupils which ease of. The lessons are planned such as, firstly the teacher shows a dance, secondly the pupils practice that dance and finally the pupils create something on their own which the teacher then grade. There is a gap in the teachers’ level of knowledge which they work around by showing videos of a dance to the pupils. Conclusion The aim of this present paper is to investigate the core content of dance in secondary school. As well as how teachers deliver that content and the teachers’ view on challenges and possibilities of implementing dance education. Teachers deliver the core content of dance in a self-sufficient manner but at the same time they express a gap in their level of knowledge. Teachers work around that gap by using didactic tools such as showing videos of a dance to the pupils. From our point of view, teachers would benefit from being offered further guidance of how to implement dance in secondary school

Self-Expectations, Socially Prescribed Expectations, and Wellness in 14-to 15-Year-Old Athletes, Ballet, and Music Students in Norwegian Talent Schools-An Interview Study

    No full text
Talent-school settings may generate stress via demanding expectations. To investigate students representing Norway's growing phenomenon of early adolescent talent schools, we interviewed twenty-seven 14-to15-year-old boys and girls about their experiences with self-and socially imposed expectations. Students were recruited from two sports schools (n = 14) and one school each with talent classes for ballet (n = 7) and music (n = 6). Using reflexive thematic analysis, we found four main themes representing the performers' accounts of (a) self-oriented expectations of persistent hard work, evoking self-doubts, and never-give-up attitudes; (b) coaches'/teachers' socially prescribed expectations, stimulating hard work, and pursuit of approval and opportunities; (c) parental expectations, reflected as helpful support, concerns of letting parents down, and negotiating independence; and (d) struggles with balancing expectations, reflected by demanding workloads, difficulties with prioritizing recovery, and ill-being. Early interventions targeting unhealthy self-and socially imposed expectations in high-expectation settings may be required to safeguard youth performers' healthy development

Fully Integrated Wearable Device for Continuous Sweat Lactate Monitoring in Sports.

    No full text
The chemical digitalization of sweat using wearable sensing interfaces is an attractive alternative to traditional blood-based protocols in sports. Although sweat lactate has been claimed to be a relevant biomarker in sports, an analytically validated wearable system to prove that has not yet been developed. We present a fully integrated sweat lactate sensing system applicable to in situ perspiration analysis. The device can be conveniently worn in the skin to monitor real-time sweat lactate during sports, such as cycling and kayaking. The novelty of the system is threefold: advanced microfluidics design for sweat collection and analysis, an analytically validated lactate biosensor based on a rational design of an outer diffusion-limiting membrane, and an integrated circuit for signal processing with a custom smartphone application. The sensor covering the range expected for lactate in sweat (1-20 mM), with appropriate sensitivity (-12.5 ± 0.53 nA mM-1), shows an acceptable response time (<90 s), and the influence of changes in pH, temperature, and flow rate are neglectable. Also, the sensor is analytically suitable with regard to reversibility, resilience, and reproducibility. The sensing device is validated through a relatively high number of on-body tests performed with elite athletes cycling and kayaking in controlled environments. Correlation outcomes between sweat lactate and other physiological indicators typically accessible in sports laboratories (blood lactate, perceived exhaustion, heart rate, blood glucose, respiratory quotient) are also presented and discussed in relation to the sport performance monitoring capability of continuous sweat lactate

Effects of tailored interventions for anxiety management in choking-susceptible performing artists : a mixed-methods collective case study.

    No full text
INTRODUCTION: Not being able to manage performance anxiety and subsequently experiencing a decline in performance have been called "choking under pressure". High trait anxiety and fear of negative evaluation, as well as low self-efficacy or self-confidence, can put performers especially at risk of experiencing choking. This study, therefore, examined the effects of psychological choking interventions tailored to "choking-susceptible" performing artists individually in a coaching setting. METHODS: We conducted a mixed-methods (QUANT + QUAL) collective case study with nine performing artists, who each received five individual coaching sessions. The tailored choking interventions comprised acclimatization training, goal setting, and pre-performance routines, including elements such as imagery, self-talk, and relaxation techniques. Before and after the 10-week intervention phase, they filled in questionnaires on trait performance anxiety, fear of negative evaluation, and self-efficacy, performed in front of a jury, and were interviewed about their experiences. Transcripts of interviews and coaching sessions were analyzed using thematic analysis. Heart rate measurements, weekly performance videos, and expert evaluations were also part of our comprehensive data. RESULTS: Quantitative data showed reductions in performance anxiety and fear of negative evaluation, and increases in self-efficacy and performance quality, from before to after the intervention phase. Most participants also had a lower heart rate when performing for the jury. Themes from qualitative analysis comprised managing nervousness and feeling more relaxed, becoming more self-confident, satisfaction with artistic and mental performance, feeling good and enjoying performing, and general positive effects. CONCLUSION: Tailoring psychological interventions may provide several benefits for choking-susceptible performing artists

Can dementia risk be reduced by following the American Heart Association's Life's Simple 7? : A systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis.

    No full text
This study aimed to quantify the relationships between the American Heart Association (AHA) Cardiovascular Health (CVH) metrics, namely AHA Life's Simple 7, and cognitive outcomes. We searched PubMed and Embase (January 1, 2010-August 24, 2022) and finally included 14 longitudinal studies (311654 participants with 8006 incident dementia cases). Random-effects meta-analysis and one-stage linear mixed-effects models were performed. Increased CVH score seemed to associate with decreased risk of incident dementia in a linear manner, but this relationship varied by the measurement age of CVH metrics. That is, midlife CVH tended to have a linear association with late-life dementia risk, whereas a J-shaped association was observed between the late-life CVH score and dementia. In addition, late-life dementia risk was reduced significantly if individuals maintained an ideal level of AHA's CVH guidelines of physical activity, fasting plasma glucose, total cholesterol, and smoking. However, our meta-analysis did not show a significant association between CVH score and global cognitive decline rate. Following AHA's CVH guidelines and maintaining CVH at an optimal level would substantially reduce the late-life dementia risk. More research is required to explore the link between a favorable CVH score and cognitive trajectories among cognitively asymptomatic older populations

Psychiatric disorders in Swedish elite athletes : Prevalence, comorbidity and life stories

    No full text
The aim of this thesis is to explore psychiatric disorders in Swedish elite athletes. The first study investigates a) the prevalence of symptoms of psychiatric disorders, b) the prevalence of mental health problems, defined by psychological suffering and impairment>2 weeks, c) the usefulness of sport-specific instruments in indicating clinical levels of psychiatric symptoms, and d) the life history of psychiatric disorders. The second study describes psychiatric disorders and comorbidities in a clinical cohort of treatment-seeking elite athletes and high-performance coaches at two publicly funded outpatient psychiatric clinics in Stockholm and Malmö, Sweden. The third study uses a narrative approach to understand the reasons why elite athletes with established psychiatric disorders choose to seek support and treatment outside – rather than within – their own sport environment. The fourth study presents a poetic representation of one female elite athlete’s experiences of living with, and seeking treatment for, an eating disorder. In sum, 19.5% of Swedish elite athletes had symptoms of anxiety and/or depression, and 8.1% had previously received a psychiatric diagnosis. The lifetime prevalence of mental health problems was 51.7%, with 50% of onsets between ages 17 and 21. Sport-specific instruments generally reported fair diagnostic accuracy, but without sufficient sensitivity or specificity for practical use. Among elite athletes in psychiatric treatment, anxiety disorders were the most common (69%), followed by affective disorders (51%) and eating disorders (26%). Comorbidity was generally common between disorders. Regarding help-seeking, the performance narrative – defined as a single-minded focus on performance that justifies, and even demands, the exclusion of any form of psychological weakness – forced elite athletes to adopt various impression management strategies to hide their psychological suffering. In closing, being invited to witness the em-bodied experiences of a female elite athlete struggling with and seeking treatment for an eating disorder reminds us that behind every prevalence number there is a person

    No full text

Does distance covered in different speed zones during games differ between a U19- and senior team in the highest league of Swedish soccer during a whole season? : A quantitative comparison of distance covered in different speed zones

    No full text
Aim The purpose of this study was to analyze and compare if the distribution of distance coveredin different speed zones differ between a U19 team and an 1st-team (senior team) in Swedishelite soccer. The comparison is made both between team level and positional level. The parameters that the analysis includes are distance covered in different speed zones, totaldistance covered, top speed and number of sprints in games during the whole season of 2022. Method Data was collected by normal practice of the teams during games, by Global Positioning System (GPS) units. In the U19 team (n=14) data from 24 games were included. For the 1stteam (n=22) data from 30 games were included. The data from the GPS have been anonymized before it was compiled and analyzed in Excel and Jamovi to identify any eventual differences between the teams. Result The analysis showed that the 1st team covered a longer distance in the lowest speedzone compared to the U19 team (p ≤ 0.05), although the result did not show statistical significance after a Bonferroni correction. There was a tendency that the U19 team performed more sprints in comparison to the 1st team. However the U19 team did not move a significantly longerdistance in sprint speed in comparison to the 1st team. When analyzing data at positionallevels, the 1st team had a significantly longer distance covered in sprint speed in many of theposition based analyses. But the result did not show significance after a Bonferroni correction. Conclusion Our analysis showed that there were some tendencies pointing to differences between theteams that were shown in the analysis. After the Bonferroni correction none of these differences showed significance. Nevertheless, the results can still be of relevance in practice and could be used as a framework for players who are in their last year as youth players preparing to take the step into professional soccer. The result can be useful as a base fortraining programing aimed to prepare youth players for senior soccer
