Virtual Reality must be a thing! : - Användning av koreografi i cinematic VR

    No full text
In this essay, Choreography within cinematic virtual reality (VR) is investigated through the genre of screen dance. The purpose is to contribute to the knowledge of choreography by investigating the experience of the medium from the perspective of the viewer/participant and the importance of the site. Essentially, using a laboratory approach, a choreography has been developed in two stages which after being filmed with different dancers at different sites, has been the starting point to the analysis. Part of the approach has also been that I myself actively participated in the whole process by taking on different roles. My participation was threefold; first as a dancer/choreographer, then as choreographer/participant/viewer, when the dancers came into the process, and finally as participant/viewer. As a theoretical point of departure, the concepts of affect, emotion and emotional expression are used to create an understanding of how an experience is created in 3D with the help of choreography and locations. The importance of a site was investigated though three different concepts which include the physical location, technology as a location, and the thirdspace. With the help of these concepts, it is shown how a physical location changes and becomes a thirdspace with the help of technology. Because of technology, this leads to the acceptance of the thirdspace as the fictional location equivalent to reality by the viewer/participant. The term kinesthetic perception explains the phenomena of how the viewer bodily experiences being "there". The result of my study has revealed that for a deeper experience to occur, the traditional film convention of 180 degrees must be challenged and supplanted by the 360 degree rule where the relationship between the viewer/participant, choreographer and the location are in focus and where engaging the moment of point of interest (POI) is allowed to happen. Further each viewer/participant has their own impression of what is taking place, unlike a scenic or performative action, the experience in cinematic VR is not shared directly with other viewer/participant

Dance is represented in the main contents of the physical education curriculum in the upper secondary school but teaching dance can be a challenging task for PE-teachers because of large groups, student motivation, limited competence, lack of time or uncertainties of the benefits of dance. To gain more knowledge and possible solutions semi-structured interviews were performed with three PE-teachers, regarding their experiences of teaching dance. Data was analysed thematically leading to seven themes: teacher background, contents, dance identity, teacher/student experiences, challenges and solutions, motivation, and assessment. Experiences of teachers related to classroom management, students performance, student experiences, and previous experiences of dancing themselves. Further teacher training was requested for confidence and variation. Benefits of dancing was described as sense of rhythm, coordination, motorics, balance, flexibility, joy of movement, group connection, confidence or usefulness. Students sometimes experience discomfort when facing dance performances, body contact or dance norms, potentially leading to avoidance. The discomfort seems to be related to fear of shame and status depreciation. Suggestions that appeared for improving motivation are to downplay dancing, choose recognizable music, begin without announcing exercises as dance, explain the benefits, choose surmountable contents, demand performances, do group assignments where everyone contributes, and use inquiry-oriented tasks

This is a fascinating time of digital media and new technologies. They offer immersion and interaction and they challenge us, as creators, to work in alternative ways, create more space for the audience and develop our ideas across media while staying true to our artistic principles. During my research, I developed a body of work that includes films, VR, AR, film and stand up comedy as a way to investigate cross-fertilisation in the creative field between different formats, practices and individuals. This is the written part of the research and is supplementing the exposition in Research Catalogue.</p

Veta utan att förstå : Konstnärlig yrkeslivsprocess

    No full text

Cultural institutions: Digital Interfaces and Virtual Presence

    No full text
This essay deals with the relationship of cultural institutions and the digital age. With the COVID-19 crises serving as a backdrop to this research paper, the not-often-questioned ideas on what cultural institutions are are reassessed. With the backbone of cultural life being presented by the almost fifty percent of cultural workers who are self – employed, we first address a more accurate definition of what a cultural institution is, judging by the state of the industry. Following this, a clear and novel differentiation between digital interfaces and virtual presence that is possible in the realm of culture is made. These terms are coined in this paper due to the need to make these two both important and valid strategies more understandable. Making these distinctions clear in practice, numerous opportunities in the digital realm for cultural institutions are presented

Gender Participation and Preference : A Multiple-Case Study on Teaching Circus at PE in Brazilians Schools

    No full text
Introduction: After more than a decade monitoring physical education instruction in Brazilian elementary schools we noticed an exponential increase in circus activities in both curricular physical education (PE) and in after-school programs. The purpose of this study was to analyze the children's participation and gender preferences in circus activities, with regard to recent studies reporting substantial gender inequalities in Brazilian PE. Method: A qualitative study, based on multiple-cases design, was conducted in two public and six private Brazilian elementary schools. Data collection consisted of 17 semi-structured interviews with PE teachers and school administrators and in situ observations totalizing more than 130 h. The data were analyzed using Content Analysis (thematic categories). Results: Boys and girls showed high participation levels in both curricular and extracurricular PE circus activities. In grades 1–5, participant activity preference was not linked to gender in either curricular or extracurricular situations and overall physical engagement was high. Gender preferences between activities were identified in grades 6–12: girls for aerial activities (trapeze, silks) and boys for juggling activities. Teacher preferences played an important role in the process of linking activities to specific genders both through modeled behavior and gendered encouragement of participants. Conclusion: Circus instruction engages children of all genders and is thereby an effective activity to counter low participation in PE for boys and, especially, girls. Although circus activities are not inherently gendered, gender preferences are cultivated by teachers through gendered behavior modeling (their activity preferences) and encouragement strategies (guiding students to activities based on gender), which is often observed in traditional PE school activities and sports.Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment in Educatio

“To understand why we are doing what we do now” – a qualitative study of dance historyteaching within the course Dansteori. This essay illustrates how teachers at upper secondary schools relate to teaching dance history within the course“Dansteori”, focusing on the aim that students should critically review different dance history writings. The study uses interviews and open-ended questionnaires, and the material have been analyzed qualitatively and discussed inrelation to historical thinking and norm-critical pedagogy. The study shows that a historical-scientific perspective is important in how teachers talk about the subject, but less important when it comes to what students should gain fromtheir studies. Instead, a general knowledge of dance history and an ability to connect ones dancing to a historical context, is at the center. The study also shows a conflict between the content and the time given as well as the student’s maturity. In relation to the theoretical perspectives, the historical-scientific perspective is prominent. By contrast, the norm-critical perspective is not as clear, and as I understand it, the critical scrutiny lies primarily within the norm rather than as a means of looking outside the Western box. The next challenge is therefore to not only review the conditions for how history is created, but also to question and change the structures that create knowledge

    No full text
The research of the operasingers own artistic management in the borderlands of opera and choreografy. The search for the autentic situation of Lucia di Lammermoors madness, beyond the objectifying view from society. In an attemt to find the subjective perspective of Lucia her selv. Through thorough investigation of the situation, the background of the story beeing told, and finally the research of impulses in the body: the attempt of embodying the state Lucia could have found her self in. In parallel the attempt of the operasinger as artistic manager finding and trusting the own artistic impulses, in embodying a role and following through a scenic idea to a final performance by following the impulses from within instead of from any outer source as it is usualy done in performing a role in a production with the guidance of a choreografer, director or conductor. Looking in the direction of creating a piece of art more like a painter, sculptor or any more selfmanaging artist in charge of the artistic process from beginning to end.
