No full text
The purpose of this study is to investigate and apply methods for assessing spatial access to and usage of green spaces in the urban area of Östersund. The study further aims to contribute to municipal green space planning by providing maps and new methodological approaches. The study examines both the spatial potential and accessibility of green spaces in Östersund, as well as the extent to which these areas are actually used, and how usage varies between different seasons. It also considers whether there are signs of unmet demand for green spaces, based on population distribution and suggested guidelines for distance and area. The analysis is based on two InVEST models: Urban Nature Access and Visitation: Recreation and Tourism. Access to green spaces was analyzed using three levels with varying distance and area targets, while usage was assessed through an analysis of social media data (photo-user-days) for winter and summer periods. QGIS was used to process, analyze, and visualize results at both raster and district levels. The results show that access to green spaces is relatively good at an overall level, but with clear deficiencies in certain districts, particularly Söder and central Staden. The use of green spaces varies geographically and seasonally, with certain distinct recreational hotspots. The study demonstrates that combined analyses of access and use can serve as a concrete decision-making basis in municipal planning and highlights the importance of developing locally adapted benchmarks for green infrastructure – for a better understanding and management of the city’s green spaces

Exploring the Christian Nationalism Within the Secularized Swedish Public Opinion

No full text
This article examines the interplay of religion, nationalism, and identity in contemporary Sweden, focusing on the rising phenomenon of Christian nationalism. Our analysis of editorials and opinion pieces from major Swedish newspapers reveals a significant shift towards a more pronounced Christian influence in public discourse, suggesting a renegotiation of the sacred–secular divide. This shift highlights a growing intertwining of religious narratives with national identity, raising questions about whether Sweden should embrace its Christian heritage or maintain religious neutrality and plurality. Our findings indicate that expressions of individual faith emerging in cultural discussions are not merely personal; they also foster organized religion, contributing to the construction of new communal identities. This relocation of the sacred from the private to the public sphere signifies a renewed world-building potential for religion, particularly in urban settings, challenging classical secularization theories. The increasing prominence of Christian perspectives reflects discontent with “secularized Christianity-as-culture”, signaling a desire for a more foundational Christianity. Furthermore, the integration of spheres, where discourse on values and societal crises fosters a renewed demand for religion, leads to a need to reinforce a religious identity which results in a “cultural defense” that effectively supports Christian nationalism

Resilient populism? : The Sweden Democrats’ discourse in parliament, 2010–2024

No full text
Purpose – How does right-wing populist discourse evolve in response to increased parliamentary influence overtime? This study analyses party leader debates of the Sweden Democrats (SD) in the Swedish parliamentbetween 2010 and 2024, focusing on four key populist elements: people-centrism, anti-elitism, popularsovereignty and antagonism.Design/methodology/approach – Drawing on the inclusion-moderation thesis and existing theories of populistcommunication, we map and interpret shifts in the discourse over time. Previous research has often focused onhighly mediatized arenas, such as news media outlets and social media, which are also posited to be conducive to“sloganized” and sensationalist forms of communication. The study adds to current research by redeployingearlier conceptualizations of populist communication in a highly formalized and regulated environment. Using amixture of qualitative and quantitative analyses, we assess changes in the frequency and configuration ofpopulist elements in the SD’s discourse.Findings – Our findings reveal that the SD have largely maintained its populist discourse as per configuration, while the overall frequency of populist instances has declined between 2010 and 2024. The discourse emphasizesa strong focus on being representatives of the “people” as opposed to the corrupt “elites” throughout the years.Originality/value – Observed shifts in how this internal logic is substantiated shed light on the adaptable natureof populist communication. These results offer new insights into the evolving nature of populist communicationin a parliamentary context

Exploring Institutional Framing of Local Labor Market Programs by Politicians and Managers in Swedish Municipalities

No full text
This study explores the governance and implementation of local labor market programs (LLMPs) in Swedish municipalities, analyzing the tension between national mandates and local policy practices. Drawing on institutional ethnography (IE), intersectionality, and emotional labor theories, we examine interviews with politicians and managers from eight municipalities. Politicians frame LLMPs as budget-driven initiatives, depoliticizing local labor market issues to comply with national policies like the January Agreement. This approach prioritizes efficiency, workfare models, and quick labor market entry, often sidelining individualized support. In contrast, managers describe their role as navigating policy constraints while addressing diverse local needs. They emphasize the challenges of aligning "one-size-fits-all" activation strategies with the realities of their participants, advocating for flexibility and adaptation within national frameworks. These contrasting perspectives reveal how LLMPs, although locally implemented, are shaped by textually mediated national policies, which influence local governance practices. Politicians focus on the need to meet national objectives, while managers struggle to reconcile these goals with participant-centered approaches. This study contributes to the understanding of how LLMPs operate within a governance framework that prioritizes efficiency over holistic support, highlighting the limitations of workfare-oriented policies and their implications for labor market integration

Prevalence of Hormonal Contraceptive Use and Self-Reported Symptomatic Experiences Attributed to the Menstrual Cycle or Hormonal Contraceptive Use in Norwegian Women : The Effect of Training Categories and Age Groups - The FENDURA Project

No full text
The aims of the current study were to (1) report the prevalence of hormonal contraceptive (HC) use among Norwegian women across different training categories and age groups; (2) compare the frequency and severity of cycle-related symptoms across differing training categories and age groups; and (3) describe the bleeding pattern and prevalence of menstrual disorder/disturbances among non-HC users. A sample of 2059 Norwegian women completed a survey reporting: weekly training volume; current HC usage, type, and reasons for use; cycle-related symptom frequency and severity; and the prevalence of menstrual disorders/disturbances. Respondents were categorized by age (youth: 13–20; young adults: 21–30; older adults: 31–50 years) and training category (minimal: 0; low: < 5; moderate: 5–9; high: ≥ 9 h·week−1). Half (51.6%) of respondents reported current HC usage, predominantly long-acting reversible contraception or combined oral contraceptives. Young adults had the highest prevalence of HC use (62.7%) compared to youth (48.4%) and older adults (43.8%), although no differences in usage were seen across training categories. HC users reported fewer and less severe cycle-related symptoms compared to non-users. A third (30.8%) of non-HC users had experienced a menstrual disorder/disturbance, with no significant differences observed across training categories or age groups. In conclusion, HC use is widespread among Norwegian women, with no differences between training categories. This similar HC prevalence suggests that HC research conducted in female cohorts may be generalizable, independent of training category. However, attention should be paid to participants' age due to differences in HC use between age groups.

Remote Controlled 3D Positioning in Augmented Telepresence : User and Quality of Experience Aspects

No full text
Industrial companies increasingly adopt remote operation technologies (teleoperation) to enhance safety and operational reach, bringing new challenges in understanding how users interact with these systems. In particular, when operators rely on flat, video-based displays without natural depth cues, challenges arise in user performance, spatial depth perception, and the overall quality of user experience when interacting with teleoperation systems. There is a growing need for evaluation approaches that extend beyond technical performance to assess the quality of users’ experience. This dissertation integrates findings from multiple studies conducted throughout the doctoral project. It explores how a mixed-method,user-centred evaluation strategy, combining system performance measurement with analysis of the quality of user experience, improves understanding of interaction quality in remote operation systems. Empirical investigations in mining and construction machinery domains examined how visual configurations such as image augmentation, scene presentation, and video degradation influence performance and perceived experience. Grounded in a pragmatic design philosophy, the research applied a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods. Laboratory experiments were conducted using two custom-built remote operation platforms: one simulating robotic arm control in mining, and another emulating construction vehicle teleoperation. Data collection included system-logged performance measures, users’ rating scales, and open-ended reflections to capture personal experiences. This multi-perspective approach enabled triangulation of results and a more complete understanding of functional and experiential aspects of remote interaction. Findings reveal that visual configurations significantly influence performance outcomes, user perceptions, and interaction strategies. Standard views enabled higher precision, while augmented perspectives improved spatial understanding and confidence. Degraded video quality and latency, reduced user comfort, control experience, and task clarity. Combining measurable performance data with reflective feedback offered deeper insights into factors shaping successful and satisfying interaction. This integrated approach contributes new knowledge to the design and evaluation of remote operation systems, ensuring attention to both system efficiency and the human experience. The methodology also provides practical guidance for evaluating complex human-technology interactions in safety-critical contexts. Beyond the mining and construction use cases, the research introduced a third platform aimed at airport safety monitoring that serves as a ready-to-use testbed for future investigations into situational awareness and human-system coordination in remote environments. At the time of the doctoral defence the following paper was unpublished: paper 4 in manuscript.</p

No full text
Digitization has fundamentally transformed archival practice, not least by introducing new vulnerabilities. The aim of this thesis is to examine how Swedish archives perceive cyber threats and their preparedness for protecting digital archival materials. The study is based on a quantitative survey with 41 respondents from municipal, state, and regional archives. The analysis uses Huang and Pearlson’s cybersecurity culture model and Matania, Yoffe, and Mashkautsan’s three-layer model of national cybersecurity. The results reveal significant variation in threat awareness and generally low preparedness, particularly in terms of staff training, responsibility structures, and integration into organizational crisis planning. The cybersecurity efforts are often delegated to external providers or central IT departments. The study shows a need for increased awareness and a greater focus on the human factor to ensure long-term cybersecurity in the Swedish digital archives.
