Several municipalities and regions in Sweden are working to create immigration in order to strengthen the economy and the supply of skills by developing attractive places and place identity. A cultural offering in the city has been shown to contribute to strengthening the place identity of the city and successful cultural events such as a festival can become a central part of a city’s place identity. Successful events have also been shown to be an effective tool for attracting new residents and contributing to social effects such as community, belonging and increased quality of life. This study aims to investigate how central actors within Östersund municipality use cultural events as a tool to construct and strengthen Östersund’s place identity. The study also focuses on analyzing the social effects that these events entail and the potential impact of the effects on students at MidSweden Univesity’s choice of place of residence after completing their degree.2025-06-06</p

Greta eller kampen om framtiden : Mediebilden av Greta Thunberg över tid
In this study, I focus on the media image of climate activist Greta Thunberg over time, taking a specific interest in temporality, age, girlhood and adulthood in relation to her climate activism. I study Swedish news articles covering three separate events: the initial school strike that she conducted outside the Swedish parliament in 2018, the speech she held at the UN Climate Action Summit in 2019, and the blockade of the entrance of the Swedish parliament in March 2024. I find that conceptions of childhood, girlhood, and the child as a symbol for hope and futurity are central to the narratives of Gretas early activism. However, I use the concept of a rowdy subject to show how Greta defies simplistic and passivizing narratives of her as an innocent child without agency and refuses to let herself become appropriated by neoliberal discourse. Furthermore, I find that as Greta ages, media perception of her activism seems to shift. Greta is expected to conform and “grow up”, and her tenacity to continue her uncompromising demands for change are read as signs of immaturity and stubbornness. I come to the rather depressing conclusion that it seems like the way that chrononormativity informs the way Greta’s activism is understood, in the end becomes a hindrance towards her message actually breaking through and leading to the substantial change that is needed to combat the climate crisis2025-06-03</p
Spectral phase-contrast X-ray imaging with high-resolution detectors
X-ray phase contrast imaging (XPCI) records phase shifts in X-rays as they pass through matter, enabling the distinction of features, such as soft tissues, that have low contrast in conventional absorption-based methods. Phase contrast beam tracking technique uses an absorbing mask to shape the X-ray beam into an array of beamlets before they reach the detector. Analyzing these beamlets provides information on X-ray absorption, refraction (differential phase), and ultra-small-angle scattering. In XPCI, mask visibility is typically defined as the ratio between the standard deviation and the mean value measured from a chosen region in the mask image. The primary focus of this study is to investigate the influence of detector spatial resolution on mask visibility. Three different scintillator-coupled scientific CMOS detectors, with varying pixel sizes and scintillator thicknesses, were tested to highlight the difference in response in terms of visibility from a given mask. Additionally, the impact of visibility on the image quality in refraction images was investigated through a wave optics simulation. The results showcase the trends of contrast and signal-to-noise ratio values as a function of mask visibility. This work is part of the development of a novel setup for combined X-ray Spectral Imaging (XSI) and XPCI undertaken by INFN's Sphere-X project implemented at the Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste.
N-Soliton Matrix mKdV Solutions : Some Special Solutions Revisited
In this article, a general solution formula is derived for the d×d-matrix modified Korteweg–de Vries equation. Then, a solution class corresponding to special parameter choices is examined in detail. Roughly, this class can be described as N-solitons (in the sense of Goncharenko) with common phase matrix. It turns out that such a solution even takes values in a commutative subalgebra of the d×d-matrices. We arrive at a rich picture of possibilities for generalized 1-solitons and at visual patterns of N-solitons which combine nonlinear with linear features. The impact of the phase matrix is visualized in computer plots
Prevalence of betel nut chewing and its pattern of distribution across the Bangladeshi socio-demographics
In Bangladesh, chewing betel nut has become culturally and socially approved, becoming a mounting public health concern. This study aimed to estimate the current prevalence of betel nut chewing, identify the sociodemographic correlates in urban and rural settings, and identify any vulnerable group for future policy-making to address this problem. This is a retrospective study of secondary data analysis based on the data of the Bangladesh Health and Injury Survey 2016. The outcome variable of interest was the self-reported practice of chewing betel nuts. Only ≥ 18 years old participants were considered. In the logistic regression model, the odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals were used to determine the correlates of each independent variable. The multivariable model’s explanatory variables were all tested to ensure no multi-collinearity in the final model. The prevalence of betel nut chewing was 31.4% among the study population. Multivariate analysis showed that participants aged 65 years and above were 10 times more likely to be betel nut users (AOR 10.17; 95% CI 9.58–10.79), while rural populations were 1.24 times more likely to use betel nut (AOR 1.24; 95% CI 1.21–1.27). Given the significant public health burden, targeted interventions are warranted to mitigate its impact. The findings indicate that betel nut chewing is highly prevalent, particularly among older, illiterate, and rural populations, demonstrating stark social and geographic inequalities. However, as the data were collected in 2016, the current socio-political and economic changes in Bangladesh may have influenced this trend, limiting the direct applicability of the findings to the present context.
On the Gilded Genesis of Structure and Discourse
This article contributes to a form-genetic critique of post-Marxist discourse theory. We argue that the concepts of sign value, equivalence and the empty signifier project the logic of the value-form onto social reality in general. We trace the roots of the concept of sign value in structural linguistics to the Lausanne school of marginalism and reconstruct its permutation in post-Marxist discourse theory as developed by Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe. We argue that the projection of the value-form through the key concepts of discourse theory relates to how discourse theory inherits the marginalist premises of structural linguistics. Drawing on Genevieve Vaughan’s theory of commodity exchange as a one-word language, we suggest that the empty signifier reflects the objective conceptuality of the money form of value, not a universal aspect of social and political reality. This projection of the value-form eternalises capitalist social forms and promotes a politics which discounts proletarian and ‘popular’ self-activity
On the inclusion of sustainability and digitalisation in quality management–an overview from past to present
The aim of this study is to explore whether trends in sustainability and digitalisation from the 1980s until today have left any significant practical or epistemological footprints on the quality management paradigm. The study design consists of a mixed-methods approach that applies a data-mining methodology and content analysis to the digital archives of eight scientific journals: six within the quality management (QM) domain and two with a focus on operations management (OM). The data set contains an unbroken time series of over 12,000 research paper abstracts, the first of them published in 1980, giving the study a coverage of almost 40 years. The findings show that sustainability came onto the scholarly scene in 1996 and has since become an increasingly popular research area. In regard to digitalisation, the story is quite different, as the concept is currently absent from the scholarly QM and OM literatures. However, a search for information technology (IT) and information systems (IS) revealed that these topics have been gaining attention since the 1980s. However, it was found that QM research only addresses one part of digitalisation, omitting several interesting dimensions. One example is that the QM and OM literatures address IS mainly in relation to standardised guidelines and business processes within organisations. At the same time, we found a handful of studies combining QM and topics related to modern digitisation, like social media.
Exploring Sustainable Development Goals and Curriculum Adoption : A Scoping Review from 2020-2025
This scoping review examines the integration of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)-specifically SDG 4, which concerns quality education-into national curricula at various levels of education between 2020 and 2025. This qualitative study uses the scoping review method to synthesise international research, identifying thematic trends, methodological approaches, and implications for curriculum development. The analysis reveals a strong focus on higher education, with articles from Asia and Europe dominating the discourse, while perspectives from early childhood education and the Global South are under-represented. Most articles favour qualitative designs, engaging with the SDGs as curricular content, institutional transformation frameworks, or community-based education tools. Despite these promising approaches, significant gaps remain in addressing behavioural change and equity across educational systems. Therefore, the study calls for more inclusive, context-sensitive, and interdisciplinary strategies to support the transformative ambitions of the 2030 Agenda
