Enhancing Code Static Analysis with LLMs: An Experimentwith SpotBugs and Gemini
Context: Static analysis tools are frequently employed insoftware projects to identify issues and flaws in the code. However, these tools frequently produce many falsepositives, i.e., bug reports that are not actual code flaws, thatrequire developers’ time and effort to adjudicate. Objective:We aim to integrate a Large Language Model (LLM), Gemini, with a static analysis tool, SpotBugs, in our tool, LLMAS, toautomatically filter false positives from SpotBugs’ reports.Method: We test LLMAS on 10,056 test cases from the JulietJava 1.3 dataset, covering 14 CWEs, and then compare theresults to SpotBugs in terms of precision, recall rate, andprocessing time. Results: The results for LLMAS show aprecision of 0.3673 and a recall rate of 0.4914 compared toSpotBugs’ precision of 0.3236 and the same recall rate. Theadditional time taken for LLMAS compared to SpotBugs isvery large, as our experiment shows that standaloneSpotBugs took 7.2 minutes while LLMAS took 4.86 hours. Conclusion: We conclude from our experiment that eventhough LLMAS performs beer than SpotBugs, theimprovement most likely does not justify the additional timetaken in most software projects. However, we see potential inthis methodology and urge other researchers to exploresimilarly straightforward approaches, such as LLMAS, withoptimized prompts and LLM parameters.
Forget me not : av Teller of Tales
It’s All About Relations : A Spatio-Temporal Perspective on Local Civil Society Collaboration
Collaboration plays a vital role in addressing complex problems across multiple domains of life – whether in private households, professional environments, or broader societal contexts. At a societal level, collaboration is often necessary to solve critical and complex tasks invarious contexts, across which it is fundamentally relational. In otherwords, collaboration does not occur in a vacuum but rather is conditioned by temporal and spatial conditions and social relations, which together influence how it takes form and unfolds. Despite the importance of these contextual aspects, research on collaboration within civil society has often paid limited analytical attention to how temporality, spatiality and social relations shape collaborative practices. This thesis seeks to address this gap by exploring collaboration among civil society actors through a relational lens, witha particular focus on the dynamics in the setting of refugee support and forest fires at the local level. It consists of four individual papers (Papers I–IV), each of which applies a relational perspective to examine how social relations, temporality and spatiality interact to influence the formation, development and sustainability of collaboration within civil society. The first paper lays the foundation by exploring how locally based civil society organisations (CSOs) in Malmö responded to the refugee situation of 2015–2016. Using interviews with CSOs and combining a framework for organisational drivers of collaboration with relational sociology, it shows that collaboration is not only activated by external needs but is also deeply conditioned by preexisting relations. It highlights how collaboration functions both as a response to crisis and as a trust-building process that sustains organisational resilience. This paper establishes the importance of relational interdependencies in urban contexts and introduces temporality as a key dimension, especially as CSOs anticipate future scenarios in shaping their current actions. Building on this, Paper II examines a more formalised platform for collaboration – theMalmöandan local compact – through the lens of a collaborative governance framework. In addition to interviews, it includes policy documents related to the Malmöandan, making temporality more explicitly central, as the paper investigates how CSOs’ engagement with the compact is shaped by their perceptions of future roles and risks. The study reveals that while some CSOs see the Malmöandan as a pathway to deeper collaboration with local government, others perceive it as a potential threat to their autonomy, shaped by political ideologies and historical mistrust. Thus, this paper extends the temporal analysis of Paper I by showing how anticipated futures and ideological conditions shape collaborative willingness and withdrawal. The third paper shifts the empirical focus from an urban to a rural setting, exploring how informants in the northern inland area of Sweden discuss collaboration concerning refugee support. Using relational place theory and the concept of peripheralisation, it introduces the notion of place-specific collaboration to describe how rural civil society actors adapt to their unique challenges. While expanding the spatial scope of the thesis, this paper also reinforces the relational insights of Papers I and II by demonstrating how spatial configurations enable and constrain interactions and resource sharing across actors. Finally, the fourth paper integrates and extends the thesis’s analytical frame by focusing on volunteers and their experiences of voluntary action from a processual temporal perspective. Drawing on the notion of agency as temporally embedded, and informed by additional empirical material consisting of interviews from the 2018 forest fires in Gävleborg and Jämtland, this paper shows how volunteers navigate between past experiences, present conditions, and imagined futures. In doing so, it offers a more processual understanding of volunteerism that complements the other papers and underscores how temporal narratives are not only interpretive tools but also drivers of agency and collaboration. Overall, this thesis demonstrates that collaboration within civil society is relational and shaped by temporality and spatiality. Voluntary initiatives and collaborative practices are conditioned through interactions with other actors and events across time and space. Theoretically, by integrating insights from relational sociology, the thesis offers a dynamic understanding of how relationships emerge, evolve and influence collective action. Empirically, it contributes to research by examining both urban and rural settings and by including both formal organisations and individuals engaged in voluntary action outside organisational frameworks. Based on qualitative data, the findings underscore the interdependencies and contextual conditions that condition and shape how collaboration unfolds in practice. At the time of the doctoral defence the following paper was unpublished: paper 4 submitted, under review.</p
This report examines Tesseract-OCR and its potential to be more efficient in interpreting characters that lack redundancy. The primary characters that this report examine are numbers. Since Tesseract-OCR has an underlying dictionary of words for each language model that can help with word identification, this means that characters that together form a word have redundancy. The primary question that this work attempts to answer is How can OCR help classify a balance sheet? To answer this question, the work was divided into three different research questions. These questions address the ability of an already trained OCR model to become better at interpreting characters with the help of training. Annual reports have been the data set that has been given, and these have been limited to only processing the balance sheet in them. A comparison of two models, one is the official Tesseract model, and the other is the locally trained model has been conducted. The locally trained model has been trained using a generated dataset. The comparison is based on the model’s ability to interpret the characters, numbers. A general code for extracting these numbers from a balance sheet has been written, in the code extracted numbers are added together to form a sequence, the sum of these sequences are then compared with subtotals found in the balance sheet. The result of this comparison shows that the official model released by Tesseract performs better than the locally trained model. The conclusion of this work shows, however, that there is still some work to be done before these models can be used in production with intent to interpret characters that lack redundancy. However, it might still be possible to train a model that performs better using a different training data set
To develop effective strategies and implement concrete improvement measures to strengthen Sweden’s crisis preparedness, counties and municipalities must first identify the risks and vulnerabilities present in society. This is done through a so-called risk- and vulnerability analysis (RSA). RSAs enable improvements and help prioritize which actions need to be implemented to manage risks and vulnerabilities in the society. However, there are challenges in the RSA-process, especially when it comes to transforming identified risks and vulnerabilities into concrete and practical actions. The purpose of this study is to gain a deeper understanding of how municipalities work with risk and vulnerability analyses and to explore how an increased focus on proactive quality management and continuous improvement can improve municipalities’ ability to translate identified risks and vulnerabilities during a crisis into improvement measures. The study is based on a qualitative and abductive approach, with semi-structured interviews conducted with representatives from several municipalities. The results indicate that the RSA is often perceived as static and difficult to adapt to local needs and conditions, which means it’s viewed more as an administrative task rather than a practical tool to increase the crisis preparedness. In addition, municipalities face a lack of resources, which hampers the implementation of improvement measures. At the same time, significant responsibility has been transferred to the municipalities, further straining already limited local resources. Moreover, the importance of engaged and responsive leadership is emphasized to foster participation and commitment. The study also shows a lack of internal customer focus, as municipal perspectives are not sufficiently considered. In summary, the study shows that when proactive quality management and risk management interact, a positive synergy effect can be achieved that strengthens municipalities’ ability to prevent and manage risks and vulnerabilites. With the help of engaged leadership and customer focus, it is possible to create better conditions for moving from analysis to action, even in situations with limited resources
Bortom “Shrink it and Pink it” : En studie om kvinnoorienterad produktutveckling och konceptidé för Astrid Wild
Adaptation to women's needs in outdoor clothing has long been underprioritized in product development, which, among other things, is expressed in gender-stereotypical color choices and fits that do not meet the users’ functional needs, often referred to as “shrink it and pink it.” This study has been carried out in collaboration with the outdoor brand Astrid Wild, where the purpose has been, through a norm-creative innovation process, to contribute to the development of outdoor clothing that offers an inclusive fit and function without relying on traditional gender stereotypes. The goal has been to develop a concept for a pair of technical ski pants adapted for women, which includes material analysis, sketches, and suggestions for further product development. The work has been conducted according to a user-centered product development process and has included, among other things, a survey, a focus group, material tests, and iterative development methods. The results show that gender-divided garments often lack functionality, especially regarding freedom of movement over hips and thighs. Important functions turned out to be a high-performing technical membrane fabric, durable sections, good storage possibilities, and effective ventilation. A more inclusive fit strategy can be achieved by offering varied silhouettes and lengths. The material tests showed that the hydrophilic, non-porous membrane fabric exhibited better water resistance under load than the microporous membrane fabric. The conclusion is that a norm-critical design process can lead to more functional and inclusive products. The results of the study, including the developed concept in Clo3D, can serve as guidance for future development of technical outdoor clothing and at the same time contribute to a broader discussion on inclusive design principles within product development
A Note on μόναρχος at Solon 9 West (12 Gentili-Prato)
This investigation explores the term μόναρχος as it appears in Solon 9 (West) (Gentili-Prato 9). Alongside the use of μούναρχος in Theognis 52, this Solonian fragment stands as the only surviving instance in archaic Greek literature of the concept of ‘monarch.’ By analyzing the manuscript witnesses, particularly the evidence provided by Diodorus Siculus’ Bibliotheca Historica, and comparing other Solonian passages that feature terms for sovereign rulers, I contend that the term μονάρχου in Solon is likely an interpolation, replacing an original τυράννου
Development of a coupled experimental-numerical methodology using an instrumented human head replica for impact testing
Head injury prevention is a crucial concern within the healthcare system and scientific community. Experimental and numerical trials play a key role, utilizing anthropomorphic test devices and human head numerical models to study impact scenarios. However, rigid headforms, Like Hybrid III or EN 960, lack biofidelity, suggesting a need for more refined physical models, such as NOCSAE standardized headform. Moreover, the direct development of human head numerical models relies on testing cadaveric tissues. Therefore, a biofidelic instrumented human head replica embedding synthetic simulants of cerebrospinal fluid, meninges, and brain was developed at the University of Padova in collaboration with Mid Sweden University. As part of this activity, the present study proposes an integrated experimental-numerical methodology for impact testing, involving the development of a finite element model of this replica. This also supports the future development of human head models having the same geometry as physical replicas. Preliminarily, the proposed workflow involves the mechanical characterization of the materials used for the replica and the geometry reconstruction for the subsequent numerical analysis. This was performed with an explicit dynamic algorithm to simulate impacts of the physical bare replica onto a flat anvil using a drop tower. An example of the collection and analysis of experimental and numerical data is presented as a preliminary validation of the model. The interpretation of these results is provided as a basis for refinements, before the study of helmeted impacts. The results show that the current model needs improvements in terms of coupling mechanisms and skin and fluid constitutive formulations
Real-Time Machine Learning Model Monitoring for BankingFraud Detection: A Micro-Batch Approach with Evidently AI
Machine learning (ML) models are widely used in financialsystems for real-time fraud detection. However, theirperformance can degrade over time due to gradual changesin input data distributions, called data drift. Data drift posessignificant risks to system reliability. Traditional MLOpspipelines often rely on full-batch monitoring, which is oftennot responsive enough to capture fast-evolving fraudpatterns. This thesis explores a micro-batch monitoringapproach using the Evidently AI framework, applied to aRandom Forest classifier trained on the Feedzai BankAccount Fraud dataset. The study implements and comparesboth full-batch and micro-batch monitoring architectures toevaluate their impact on detection latency, model accuracy, and correlation between data drift and classificationperformance. The monitoring tools were evaluated on five dataset variantsin a simulated streaming setup. Precision, recall, and driftscores for individual features were calculated for eachchunk. The study used correlation tests between drift metricsand model performance over time. The results indicate that micro-batch monitoring consistentlydetected drift earlier than full-batch monitoring across alltest variants. It also showed stronger and more statisticallysignificant correlations between drift and drops in precisionand recall, suggesting improved sensitivity to relevant datadrifts. The analysis of individual features showed that driftin certain features had a stronger negative impact onperformance, particularly recall. This study provides early practical evidence that micro-batchmonitoring may improve the responsiveness and reliabilityof ML-based fraud detection systems. It offers valuableinsights for improving MLOps pipelines in environmentswhere data evolves frequently and reliability is critical
