Smart home techniques for young people with functional disabilities

    No full text
A purpose behind the United Nation’s Agenda 2030is that no one shall be left behind, which implies that supportfor vulnerable people shall be seen as clearly significant. Inthat context, assistive technologies serve purposes of improvingdisabled individuals’ inclusiveness and overall well-being. Thiscontribution covers ongoing experiments on techniquesdeveloped for Smart Homes, where the outcomes of suchdevelopments are targeted towards young people withfunctional disabilities, in order to provide them withindependence in their own living space

Embedding language-development tasks in lessons based on the magic finger in the primary classroom

    No full text
This article reports on a research project which investigated the impact of working with authentic children’s literature on the vocabulary development of two classes of 10–11- year-olds in Sweden. The English classes were based on Roald Dahl’s The Magic Finger. For five weeks and three lessons per week, the teacher read the book to the children and the children read some parts of the book themselves. During this time, the children worked on a range of language-focused writing tasks to support their understanding and facilitate incidental acquisition of vocabulary. The children’s performance on these tasks also provided insight into control of grammatical structures, which the learners had already been taught, and emerging features, which they had not yet encountered explicitly in their lessons. Furthermore, many children thought that they had spoken more English through engaging with the project, a view supported by their teachers. While almost all of the children liked The Magic Finger, and most enjoyed the experience of working with it, some were ambivalent about working with another authentic book in future. This would depend on the topic and the level of difficulty of the text

Seabird migration at Cabo Carvoeiro (Peniche, Portugal) in autumn 2015

Land-based counts at Cabo Carvoeiro (Peniche, Portugal), made between 15 August and 15 November 2015 (effort 90 d, 517 h), tallied302 469 birds, most of which (99.98%) were southbound. Although 65 species were observed, four species contributed to 91% of the total:207 608 Northern Gannet Morus bassanus, 32281 Cory’s Shearwater Calonectris borealis, 16086 Manx Shearwater Puffinus puffinus, and 15 222 Balearic Shearwater Puffinus mauretanicus. Passage as a whole increased throughout the period, mainly due to a gradualintensification of Northern Gannet migration. More than 67 000 southbound procellariforms of 12 species were recorded, as were 6183Stercorariidae of four species. Daily passage rates of species recorded on more than 68 d were positively correlated in 22 of 36 cases. For Northern Gannet and Mediterranean Gull Ichthyaetus melanocephalus, the proportion of adult birds increased steadily, outnumberingyounger birds. Extrapolation based on counted versus uncounted daylight hours suggests that at least 415000 Northern Gannets, 65000Cory’s Shearwaters, and 30000 Balearic Shearwaters passed south at Cabo Carvoeiro in autumn 2015. Clearly, a very large share of theglobal population of the endangered Balearic Shearwater can be monitored at Cabo Carvoeiro. Based on generally unidirectional passagepatterns, high species diversity, as well as high season totals and daily passage rates of several species, Cabo Carvoeiro is one of the mostpromising mainland sites in the eastern North Atlantic to monitor a wide range of seabirds

An appeal to die : A literature study on nurses' experiences in meeting patients who express a desire to die

    No full text

Measuring next of kin's experience of participation in the care of older people in nursing homes

    No full text
BACKGROUND: Lack of conceptual clarity and measurement methods have led to underdeveloped efforts to measure experience of participation in care by next of kin to older people in nursing homes. OBJECTIVE: We sought to assess the measurement properties of items aimed at operationalizing participation in care by next of kin, applied in nursing homes. METHODS: A total of 37 items operationalizing participation were administered via a questionnaire to 364 next of kin of older people in nursing homes. Measurement properties were tested with factor analysis and Rasch model analysis. RESULTS: The response rate to the questionnaire was 81% (n = 260). Missing responses per item varied between <0.5% and 10%. The 37 items were found to be two-dimensional, and 19 were deleted based on conceptual reasoning and Rasch model analysis. One dimension measured communication and trust (nine items, reliability 0.87) while the other measured collaboration in care (nine items, reliability 0.91). Items successfully operationalized a quantitative continuum from lower to higher degrees of participation, and were found to generally fit well with the Rasch model requirements, without disordered thresholds or differential item functioning. Total scores could be calculated based on the bifactor subscale structure (reliability 0.92). Older people (≥ 65 years) reported a higher degree of communication and trust and bifactor total scores than younger people (p < 0.05 in both cases). People with a specific contact person experienced a higher degree of participation in the two subscales and the bifactor total score (p < 0.05 in all three instances). CONCLUSION: Psychometric properties revealed satisfactory support for use, in nursing home settings, of the self-reported Next of Kin Participation in Care questionnaire, with a bifactor structure. Additional research is needed to evaluate the effectiveness of the scales' abilities to identify changes after intervention. TRIAL REGISTRATION: The KUPA project has Clinical Trials number NCT02708498

A focus group interview study of the experience of stress amongst school-aged children in Sweden

    No full text
The study explored experiences of stress in children aged 10-12. An inductive qualitative design was used. Ten focus group interviews were conducted with Swedish schoolchildren (n = 42) aged 10-12. The interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed using qualitative content analysis. The study identified one theme-"Body and mind react"-and three subthemes: (1) Friendships matters, (2) Parental stress affect, and (3) Trying to do my best. Stress often occurred in the children's everyday environment. The children had experienced how stress could be expressed both physically and mentally, inside and outside school. The children also had the experience of seeing people in their environment being stressed, which could create feelings that affected the children. The experience of the children was also that stress can sometimes be good. Stress related to peers, family, school, and society was commonly experienced by children aged 10-12. Both positive and negative stress was reported

"Bär det stora Barnet in i Ordens Domäner" : Anna Rydstedts levande diktkonst

To live with an Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) : A General Literature Study

    No full text

Imitation recognition and its prosocial effects in 6-month old infants

    No full text
The experience of being imitated is theorised to be a driving force of infant social cognition, yet evidence on the emergence of imitation recognition and the effects of imitation in early infancy is disproportionately scarce. To address this lack of empirical evidence, in a within-subjects study we compared the responses of 6-month old infants when exposed to ipsilateral imitation as opposed to non-imitative contingent responding. To examine mediating mechanisms of imitation recognition, infants were also exposed to contralateral imitation and bodily imitation with suppressed emotional mimicry. We found that testing behaviours-the hallmark of high-level imitation recognition-occurred at significantly higher rates in each of the imitation conditions compared to the contingent responding condition. Moreover, when being imitated, infants showed higher levels of attention, smiling and approach behaviours compared to the contingent responding condition. The suppression of emotional mimicry moderated these results, leading to a decrease in all social responsiveness measures. The results show that imitation engenders prosocial effects in 6-month old infants and that infants at this age reliably show evidence of implicit and high-level imitation recognition. In turn, the latter can be indicative of infants' sensitivity to others' intentions directed toward them

Non-affirmative school didactics and life-world phenomenology : conceptualizing missing links

    No full text
One important implication for educators is therefore that non-affirmative education is emphatically critical of educational ideas, ideologies, and curricular policies that overemphasise either socialisation to existing norms in society or the fostering of values that form a predetermined future. In school didactics, the contents of teaching are located at the very centre of the teaching/studying/learning process, maintaining a distinction between the content as intended, as practised, as experienced, and as evaluated. A challenge for both didactics and life-world phenomenology is to what extent they contain conceptually satisfying answers to the question of how teaching is seen as related to learning: in other words, how they explain pedagogical interaction as a movement from one ‘shared world’ to another. Conceptualising subject didactics for school settings is thus different from subject didactics aimed for understanding teaching, studying, and learning outside school settings. In philosophy, there are various ways to understand subject-centred and inter-subjectivity based conceptions of subjectivity
