    A Case Study of Consumer’s Attitudes towards Agro-Food Markets in Danube Microregion in COVID-19 Pandemic

    The COVID-19 pandemic affected many aspects of human life including consumer behavior. The main aim of this paper was to identify basic patterns of changes in consumer attitudes towards agri-food products under the influence of the 2020 pandemic and to better understand to what extent and what kind of food market problems appeared for the inhabitants of the Danube microregion. For this purpose, an explorative study was elaborated. Assuming that the experience of COVID-19 affected consumer attitudes and sense of food security, a hybrid survey was conducted in the Danube microregion (Croatia, Serbia and Romania) during 2022. Data collected from a total of 903 respondents were statistically analyzed in SPSS. Descriptive statistics, PCA, ANOVA and t-Test were employed. The main results have shown that although the surveyed population of the Danube microregion during the pandemic in 2020 was generally not afraid of food shortages, food was in most part available for their families and their shopping habits have not changed to a large degree, the experience of the pandemic has raised the level of awareness about some issues related to food and specifically the prices of food products. Also, three different patterns of attitude and behavior towards food and agriculture, which emerged as a result of the experience of the pandemic in 2020, were identified. These patterns also proved to be different for different segments of the population. The findings suggest the need for stronger support for the development of locally affordable food systems with the use of ICT as a coping mechanism in crises

    Određivanje optimalnih doza gama zračenja kod indukovanih mutacija pšenice i ječma

    One of the major challenges that plant breeders face in the 21st century is food safety for growing human population coupled with extreme climate changes. Accordingly, the most important breeders’ goal is to find appropriate methods in response to these challenges in order to create high-yielding varieties resilient to abiotic and biotic stressors. The aim of this study was to determine optimal doses of gamma irradiation in two wheat and one barley varieties and to apply the identified doses for development of mutant populations. Wheat and barley varieties showed different reactions to applied doses of gamma irradiation. Wheat varieties had germination rate over 90% at all applied doses while barley seeds showed to be more susceptible to gamma irradiation. Gamma irradiation had greater influence on seedling height which was clearly demonstrated by growth reduction with increasing radiation doses. ANOVA showed a significant difference between genotypes, applied doses of gamma radiation as well as genotype by doses interaction for seedling height. At highest dose of 600 Gy, the reduction of seedling height was 94.6%, 96.5% and 96.8% in Simonida, Rudnik and NS 40S, respectively. The irradiation doses that resulted in seedling growth reduction by 50% (GR50) were 210 Gy for barley Rudnik and wheat NS 40S, and 310 Gy for wheat variety Simonida. Identified doses were used for the irradiation of 2000 seeds of each variety in order to produce mutant populations that will be further used in a breeding program for development of varieties with increased resilience to climate change.Jedan od najvećih izazova za oplemenjivače u 21. veku je da se osigura dovoljna količina hrane za rastuću ljudsku populaciju u ekstremnim vremenskim uslovima izazvanim klimatskim promenama. Shodno tome, najvažniji cilj za proces oplemenjivanja je pronalaženje odgovarajućih metoda za stvaranje visokoprinosnih sorti tolerantnih na abiotičke i biotičke faktore stresa. Cilj ovog istraživanja bio je da se utvrde optimalne doze gama zračenja za dve sorte pšenice i jednu sortu ječma i da se identifikovane doze primene za razvoj mutantnih populacija. Sorte pšenice i ječma su ispoljile različite reakcije na primenjene doze gama zračenja. Sorte pšenice su imale klijavost preko 90% pri svim primenjenim dozama, dok je za ječam utvrđena veća osetljivost na gama zračenje. Gama zračenje je imalo veći uticaj na visinu klijanaca, pri čemu je redukcija rasta bila izraženija sa povećanjem doze zračenja. Analiza varijanse (ANOVA) je pokazala značajnu razliku u visini klijanaca između genotipova, primenjenih doza gama zračenja kao i interakcije genotip × doza. Pri najvećoj dozi od 600 Gy smanjenje visine klijanaca iznosilo je 94,6%, 96,5% i 96,8% kod Simonide, Rudnika i NS 40S, redom. Doze zračenja pri kojima je redukcija rasta klijanaca bila 50% (GR50) iznosile su 210 Gy za sorte Rudnik i NS 40S dok je za sortu pšenice Simonida bila 310 Gy. Identifikovanim dozama je zračeno 2000 semena svake sorte za proizvodnju mutantnih populacija koje bi se u budućim programima oplemenjivanja mogle koristiti za stvaranje sorti tolerantnih na izmenjene klimatske uslove

    Maize yield in Serbia depending on changes in agro-climatic factors

    Drought is one of the main consequences of climate change, which negatively affects the growth and development of plants, leading to a reduction in yields. The aim of the work is to analyze the yield of corn in Serbia in the period 2015-2023 depending on changes in agrometeorological factors. By monitoring temperature and precipitation parameters from the website of the Republic Hydrometeorological Service of Serbia, it was concluded that the air temperature for the examined period is increasing, while the total monthly amount of precipitation shows a large deficit. The examined parameters were recorded in the summer months, which was reflected in the yield, which for the examined period was significantly lower than the genetic fertility potential (6.39 t ha-1).     Genetic potential and yield components of triticale on alluvium soil of south Serbia

    The field experiment with the triticale varieties Odisej, Triamo and Goran was set up on the alluvium-type soil in Leskovac during the three growing seasons. The aim of the research was to analyse the yield, 1000 grain weight and test weight of three triticale varieties grown on slightly acidic soil. The highest yield, 1000 grain weight and test weight in all triticale varieties were in the 2020/21 year with moderate temperatures at the time of grain filling and a large amount of precipitation. The average yield during the three-year trial, for all examined triticale varieties in the study was 5.125 t/ha. The average 1000 grain weight in the study was 46.73 g and test weight were 71.71 kg/hl. Varieties Triamo and Odisej had the highest grain yield during the three-year study. The Odisej variety was characterized by the highest 1000 grain weight and test weight. The analysis of variance established a highly significant influence of agro climatic conditions on the grain yield and the 1000 grain weight of the winter triticale. A highly significant effect of genotype on 1000 grain weight and test weight was determined

    Potential to enhance cereal seed quality through intercropping with peas in Serbia's Pannonian climate

    Mixed intercropping is regarded as a promising strategy for reducing nitrogen (N) usage in cultivation systems. The positive impact of cereal-legume intercropping on protein content in companion cereal crops has been observed across various agro-ecological zones. However, a limited understanding of how intercropping influences N use efficiency and the performance of individual crops within these systems is currently restricting the broader adoption of intercropping practices. To explore the potential of intercropping for improving seed quality in spring oats, hull-less barely and winter triticale under Serbia's agrp-ecological conditions, these cereal crops were cultivated alongside spring and winter peas in mixed intercropping systems in Novi Sad, Northern Serbia. Seeding rates of the three crops in mixed intercropping were set at 70% (pea): 30% (oats, hull-less barely) and 80% (pea): 50% (triticale) of the conventional seeding rate. We used principal component analysis with mixed data and general linear modelling to explore potentials to enhance cereal seed quality through intercropping with peas in Serbia's Pannonian climate. Our study showed that variations in yield, thousand-kernel weight (TKW), and crude protein content, as well as their interrelationships under intercropping cultivation, were cultivar-specific and differed among cereal crops exposed to the same agroecological conditions. In addition, the potential of intercropping to improve crude protein content and TKW in cereal crops has been demonstrated in field experiments. However, the extent of this improvement depends on the appropriate combination of cereal and pea varieties and is highly influenced by climatic conditions. As the relationship between TKW, yield, and protein content has been shown to be crop- or even variety-specific under the same climatic conditions, selecting appropriate varieties and using optimal sowing rates are essential for improving TKW and crude protein content in intercropping systems
