Epidemiology of Taenia saginata taeniosis/cysticercosis: a systematic review of the distribution in East, Southeast and South Asia
BackgroundTaenia saginata is an important zoonotic parasite, causing taeniosis in humans and cysticercosis in bovines, the latter being a significant concern for the global beef industry. Many countries in East, Southeast and South Asia are experiencing rapid economic growth, and an increasing number of people in these countries are dependent on the livestock industry. Currently, however, an overview of the prevalence of T. saginata in this region is lacking. In this review, we analysed the available literature on T. saginata taeniosis and bovine cysticercosis for East, Southeast and South Asia.MethodsA systematic review was conducted, based on both published and grey literature. Articles published between 1990 and 2017 were mined for information on the occurrence, prevalence, and geographical distribution of T. saginata taeniosis and bovine cysticercosis in East, Southeast and South Asia.ResultsThe presence of T. saginata was described in 15 of 27 countries of the region, including Afghanistan, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, South Korea, Thailand and Vietnam. The only country that reported an absence of T. saginata is Japan, although sporadic reports of imported cases and unconfirmed reports of autochthonous infections were identified. Nationwide surveys of taeniosis with systematic sample collection and high sample numbers were available for Cambodia, China, Lao PDR, and South Korea, although speciation of Taenia was not always performed. Regional prevalence of taeniosis and bovine cysticercosis in endemic regions ranged between 0.02-42.6%, and 0.76-46.7%, respectively. However, data for bovine cysticercosis were only available for five countries (Japan, Lao PDR, Mongolia, Pakistan and Vietnam).ConclusionsThe data indicate a widespread occurrence of T. saginata throughout East, Southeast and South Asia. Identification of Taenia spp. in human infections was frequently not performed, leading to gaps in knowledge about the distribution of human tapeworm infections, mainly in regions where different human Taenia species co-occur. A high prevalence of T. saginata taeniosis and bovine cysticercosis may reflect insufficiencies in sanitation, limited health education standards, and insufficient food safety measures. Therefore, there is a need to improve local surveillance, notification, and overall control systems
A Comparison of Solar Ultraviolet Radiation Exposure in Urban Canyons in Venice, Italy and Johannesburg, South Africa
Urban environments can have high-risk spaces that can provide excess personal sun exposure, such as urban or street canyons, and the spaces between buildings, among others. In these urban spaces, sun exposure can be high or low depending on several factors. Polysulphone film (PSF) was used to assess possible daily solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR) exposure in urban canyons in Venice, Italy and, for the first time in Africa, in Johannesburg, South Africa. The photodegradation of PSF upon solar exposure was monitored at a wavelength of 330 nm by ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry, and the resultant change was converted to standard erythemal dose (SED) units (1 SED = 100 J m(-2)). Mean daily ambient solar UVR exposure measured for Venice and Johannesburg ranged between 20-28 SED and 33-43 SED, respectively. Canyon-located PSF exposures were lower in Venice (1-9 SED) than those in Johannesburg (9-39 SED), depending mainly on the sky view factor and orientation to the sun. There was large variation in solar UVR exposure levels in different urban canyons. These preliminary results should be bolstered with additional studies for a better understanding of excess personal exposure risk in urban areas, especially in Africa

Aminoquinolines afford resistance to cerebral malaria in susceptible mice
Objectives: Malaria treatment is impeded by increasing resistance to conventional antimalarial drugs. Here we explored the activity of ten novel benzothiophene, thiophene and benzene aminoquinolines. Methods: In vitro testing was performed by the lactate dehydrogenase assay in chloroquine (CQ)-sensitive Plasmodium falciparum strain 3D7 and CQ-resistant (CQ(R)) P. falciparum strain Dd2. In vivo activity was evaluated by a modified Thompson test using C57BL/6 mice infected with Plasmodium berghei ANKA strain. Results: Nine of the ten compounds had a lower 50% inhibitory concentration (IC50) than CQ against the CQ(R) strain Dd2. Five of these compounds that were available for in vivo evaluation were shown to be nontoxic. All five compounds administered at a dose of 160 mg/kg/day for 3 days prolonged the survival of treated compared with untreated mice. Untreated control mice died by Day 7 with a mean parasitaemia of 15%. Among treated mice, a dichotomous outcome was observed, with a two-third majority of treated mice dying by Day 17 with a low mean parasitaemia of 5%, whilst one-third survived longer with a mean hyperparasitaemia of 70%; specifically, five of these mice survived a mean of 25 days, whilst two even survived past Day 31. Conclusions: The significant antimalarial potential of this aminoquinoline series is illustrated by its excellent in vitro activity against the CQ(R) P. falciparum strain and significant in vivo activity. Interestingly, compounds CIAQ7, CIAQ9 and CIAQ11 were able to confer resistance to cerebral malaria and afford a switch to hyperparasitaemia to mice prone to the neurological syndrome
An integrated view on society readiness and initial reaction to COVID-19: A study across European countries
With the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the question of society's capability to deal with an acute health crisis is, once again, brought to the forefront. In the core is the need to broaden the perspective on the determinants of a country's ability to cope with the spread of the virus. This paper is about bringing together diverse aspects of readiness and initial reaction to a COVID-19 outbreak. We proposed an integrated evaluation framework which encapsulates six dimensions of readiness and initial reaction. Using a specific multi-level outranking method, we analysed how these dimensions affect the relative positioning of European countries in the early stages of the COVID-19 outbreak. The results revealed that the order of countries based on our six-dimensional assessment framework is significantly reminiscent of the actual positioning of countries in terms of COVID-19 morbidity and mortality in the initial phase of the pandemic. Our findings confirm that only when a country's readiness is complemented by an appropriate societal reaction we can expect a less severe outcome. Moreover, our study revealed different patterns of performance between former communist Eastern European and Western European countries
ELLSA based profiling of surface glycosylation in microorganisms reveals that ss-glucan rich yeasts' surfaces are selectively recognized with recombinant banana lectin
The surface of microorganisms is covered with polysaccharide structures which are in immediate contact with receptor structures on host's cells and antibodies. The interaction between microorganisms and their host is dependent on surface glycosylation and in this study we have tested the interaction of plant lectins with different microorganisms. Enzyme-linked lectin sorbent assay - ELLSA was used to test the binding of recombinant Musa acuminata lectin - BL to 27 selected microorganisms and 7 other lectins were used for comparison: Soy bean agglutinin - SBA, Lens culinaris lectin - LCA, Wheat germ agglutinin - WGA, RCA(120) - Ricinus communis agglutinin, Con A - from Canavalia ensiformis, Sambucus nigra agglutinin - SNA I and Maackia amurensis agglutinin - MAA. The goal was to define the microorganisms' surface glycosylation by means of interaction with the selected plant lectins and to make a comparison with BL. Among the tested lectins most selective binding was observed for RCA(120) which preferentially bound Lactobacillus casei DG. Recombinant banana lectin showed specific binding to all of the tested fungal species. The binding of BL to Candida albicans was further tested with fluorescence microscopy and flow cytometry and it was concluded that this lectin can differentiate ss-glucan rich surfaces. The binding of BL to S. boulardii could be inhibited with ss-glucan from yeast with IC50 1.81 mu g mL(-1) and to P. roqueforti with 1.10 mu g mL(-1). This unique specificity of BL could be exploited for screening purposes and potentially for the detection of ss-glucan in solutions
Energy, macronutrients and dietary fibre intake among adults in North Macedonia
Objective: The present research aimed to estimate macronutrients intake among adults in North Macedonia and to identify their predominant food sources. Methods: Within this cross-sectional study dietary data were collected using repeated 24h recall interviews. Nationwide, adults aged 18+ were recruited. Dietary data, anthropometric measures and socio-demographic characteristics were available for 496 participants. Nutrient intake was analyzed using the Balkan Food Composition Database and Diet Assess and Plan platform. Macedonian dietary guidelines were used for estimation of inadequacy. Results: Significant differences in macronutrients intake are noticed between age groups within certain socio-demographic factors. Total sugar intake was significantly higher among young adult females comparing with those older than 25 years (p = 0.049). Young urban females have significantly higher fats intake than older participants (p = 0.038). Higher total daily energy, proteins, fats and carbohydrates intake (p = 0.033, p = 0.043, p = 0.032, p = 0.042, respectively) was noticed among young urban males when compared to older ones. Only dietary fibre intake was higher among older urban males (p = 0.030). Univariate linear regression models showed that obese participants had significantly higher relative proteins intake comparing with those having BMI within recommended range (p = 0.024, beta = 1.21). Relative carbohydrates intake was significantly lower among males (p = 0.018, beta = -2.077) and among highly educated participants (p = 0.018, beta = -4.304). Participants with tertiary education had higher relative fats intake (p = 0.012, beta = 4.213). Conclusion: Macronutrients intake of adults should be improved. There is higher intake of dietary fats and need for an increase of complex carbohydrates intake, particularly dietary fibre. Findings of this survey should be used in shaping, fine-tuning and implementing food and nutrition policies that will stimulate healthier diets for prevention of diet related non-communicable diseases
Computational image analysis reveals the structural complexity ofToxoplasma gondiitissue cysts
Toxoplasma gondiiis an obligate intracellular parasite infecting up to one third of the human population. The central event in the pathogenesis of toxoplasmosis is the conversion of tachyzoites into encysted bradyzoites. A novel approach to analyze the structure ofin vivo-derived tissue cysts may be the increasingly used computational image analysis. The objective of this study was to quantify the geometrical complexity ofT.gondiicysts by morphological, particle, and fractal analysis, as well as to determine if it is impacted by parasite strain, cyst age, and host type. A total of 31 images ofT.gondiibrain cysts of four type-2 strains (Me49, and local isolates BGD1, BGD14, and BGD26) was analyzed using ImageJ software. The parameters of interest included diameter, circularity, packing density (PD), fractal dimension (FD), and lacunarity. Although cyst diameter varied widely, its negative correlation with PD was observed. Circularity was remarkably close to 1, indicating a perfectly round shape of the cysts. PD and FD did not vary among cysts of different strains, age, and derived from mice of different genetic background. Conversely, lacunarity, which is a measure of heterogeneity, was significantly lower for BGD1 strain vs. all other strains, and higher for Me49 vs. BGD14 and BGD26, but did not differ among Me49 cysts of different age, or those derived from genetically different mice. The results indicate a highly uniform structure and occupancy of the differentT.gondiitissue cysts. This study furthers the use of image analysis in describing the structural complexity ofT.gondiicyst morphology, and presents the first application of fractal analysis for this purpose. The presented results show that use of a freely available software is a cost-effective approach to advance automated image scoring forT.gondiicysts
B. burgdorferi infekcija u krpeljma uklonjenih sa ljudi i prisustvo antitela protiv borelija kod pacijenata infestiranih krpeljima
The primary objectives of this study were (1) to determine the presence of Borrelia burgdorferi infection in ticks removed from patients for the purpose of singling out sites with increased risk of Lyme borreliosis, and (2) to determine the presence of IgM and/or IgG antibodies against B. burgdorferi sensu lato (s. l.) complex in sera of patients who had ticks removed. From 108 ticks removed from patients, all were examined zoologically and a sub-sample of 91 ticks was tested using PCR analysis to determine the presence of DNA indicating B. burgdorferi infection. To detect anti-Borrelia IgM and/ or IgG antibodies in 61 patients bitten by ticks, we used line recombinant immunoblot test. The most common tick identified was Ixodes ricinus. B. burgdorferi s. l. was present in 37 of 91 tested ticks (40.7%). Seroconversion against B. burgdorferi s. l. antigen was detected in 12 of 61 patients (19.7%). Most of the infected ticks were from the province of Vojvodina (11 municipalities), with the city of Novi Sad proving to be the site with the highest number of infected ticks, 6 in total.Glavni cilj ove studije je bio da se ispita prisustvo B. burgdorferi infekcije u krpeljma uklonjenih sa pacijenata radi utvđivanja lokaliteta sa povećanim rizikom za obolevanje od lajm borelioze, kao i ispitivanje prisustva IgM i/ili IgG antitela usmerenih protiv B. burgdorferi s. l. kompleksa u serumu pacijenata infestiranih krpeljima. Sa pacijenata je prikupljeno i zoološki ispitano 108 krpelja. PCR analiza krpelja korišc'ena je za utvrđivanje prisustva B. burgdorferi s. l. kompleks kod 91 krpelja od ukupnih 108. Za otkrivanje IgM i/ili IgG antitela protiv B. burgdorferi s. l. korišćeni su linijski rekombinantni imunoblot testovi. Najčešc'i identifikovani krpelj je Ixodes ricinus. B. burgdorferi s. l. je bila prisutna u 37 od 91 testiranog krpelja (40,7%). Prisustvo IgM/IgG antitela protiv B. burgdorferi s. l. otkriveno je kod 12 od 61 pacijenta (19,7%). Najviše inficiarnih krpelja je sa teritorije AP Vojvodine (11 opština), gde je urbani deo Novog Sada lokalitet sa najvećim brojem inficiranih krpelja - 6
