The Fate of the Brazilian Collection of the State Zoological Museum in Warsaw Before and During the Second World War (1939–1945)
Before the Second World War, the State Zoological Museum in Warsaw was a dynamically functioning research institution, characterised by its rapidly growing collections of contemporary animals for scientific, educational and exhibition purposes. The specimens were mainly collected during expeditions organised by the museum’s staff. One of the explorers was Tadeusz Chrostowski (1878–1923), an ornithologist and head of the Neotropical Birds Department of the Museum. The naturalist organised three expeditions to Brazil in 1910–1911, 1913–1915 and 1921–1923. He explored areas of the state of Paraná that were considered the least explored. Chrostowski’s last journey, known as the Polish Zoological Expedition, received the most attention in scientific and social circles. It was the leading overseas scientific expedition organised by the newly revived Polish state. In addition to Chrostowski, the research team included the entomologist Tadeusz Jaczewski (1899–1974) and the taxidermist Stanisław Borecki (1888–1968). The team aimed to study the fauna of southern and central Paraná, specifically in areas with araucaria humid forests inhabited by Polish colonies, subtropical forests, and along the rivers Ivaí, Paraná and Iguaçu. A collection of over 22,000 zoological specimens was one of the outcomes of the fieldwork. The material included many species of birds first found in the Paraná. The collection was taken to Warsaw in 1924 and was available to researchers in the museum until 1939. The Second World War was a tragic event in the history of the institution. Not only did it interrupt scientific and research activities, but it also contributed to the loss of part of the collection. Among the museum’s war losses were more than 2 million animal specimens, including more than 20,000 of Chrostowski’s specimens. The collections were destroyed, confiscated and exported and many were dispersed. Research into the history of Chrostowski’s collection aims to reconstruct and describe it, as well as to spread knowledge of the wartime losses suffered by the State Zoological Museum during the Second World War
Which community: “komunikacyjna" or "komunikatywna”? — lexicographic considerations
The aim of this article is to present the dictionary history of the adjectives komunikacyjny and komunikatywny. The presentation of the history of both adjectives in Polish lexicography is used to answer the question of which of them can be used to define a language community. The data contained in general dictionaries of the Polish language, both historical and contemporary, allow us to consider both lexemes as synonyms in the context of a community, although none of the lexicons records the connections wspólnota komunikacyjna / wspólnota komunikatywna.
The Minimum Viable Boundary Object (MVBO): A Heuristic for the Threshold of Translational Stability in Heterogeneous Collaboration Networks
The article proposes the Minimum Viable Boundary Object (MVBO) as a heuristic for the threshold of translational stability in heterogeneous collaboration networks. It starts from the premise that failure constitutes a normal operating condition of contemporary organisations functioning under neoliberal calculability. The theoretical contribution positions MVBO within the frameworks of Science and Technology Studies (STS) and Actor-Network Theory (ANT), drawing on the concepts of boundary objects, boundary-negotiating artefacts, and knowledge management across epistemic boundaries. The heuristic enables early identification of micro-mechanisms of translational failure, reframing failure as an analytically productive moment of network work. The proposed concept is derived from findings of the author’s study on the social dimension of the TCRact project’s failure. The article concludes by outlining implications for research in STS and ANT and for design and implementation practices in complex organisational settings.

From Translations to Non-Collapsing Logic Combinations
Prawitz suggested expanding a natural deduction system for intuitionistic logic to include rules for classical logic constructors, allowing both intuitionistic and classical elements to coexist without losing their inherent characteristics. Looking at the added rules from the point of view of the Gödel-Gentzen translation, led us to propose a general method for the coexistent combination of two logics when a conservative translation exists from one logic (the source) to another (the host). Then we prove that the combined logic is a conservative extension of the original logics, thereby preserving the unique characteristics of each component logic. In this way there is no collapse of one logic into the other in the combination. We also demonstrate that a Gentzen calculus for the combined logic can be induced from a Gentzen calculus for the host logic by considering the translation. This approach applies to semantics as well. We then establish a general sufficient condition for ensuring that the combined logic is both sound and complete. We apply these principles by combining classical and intuitionistic logics capitalizing on the Gödel-Gentzen conservative translation, intuitionistic and S4 modal logics relying on the Gödel-McKinsey-Tarski conservative translation, and classical and Jaśkowski’s paraconsistent logics taking into account the existence of a conservative translation
Inclusive Digital Technologies: Perspectives, Opportunities, and Limitations

Dataset of Interview Recordings and Transcripts with Smart Home (Art) Creators – Work Package 2 of the project “SMARTUP: Smart(ening up the modern) home – Redesigning power dynamics through domestic space digitalisation” (CHANSE Scheme)
The dataset comprises materials from online semi-structured interviews with six creators (artists and designers) involved in producing visions of smart homes and smart home technologies, collected within Work Package 2 (Art & Popular Culture) of the SMARTUP project.
It consists of:
– Interview scenario document, outlining the structure of the conversation and the main thematic blocks.
– Six (6) person-specific folders, each corresponding to a single interviewee. Each folder contains the materials available for that interlocutor, which may include a video recording, an audio-only recording, and the corresponding interview transcript.
Across all folders, the dataset includes three audio files (total duration: 1 hour, 48 minutes, 12 seconds), three video files (total duration: 3 hours, 58 minutes, 35 seconds), and six transcripts (total length: 39,648 words). A separate README file within the deposited dataset provides detailed information on the internal structure, file naming conventions, and formats. This dataset contains qualitative materials generated within Work Package 2 (Art & Popular Culture) of the SMARTUP project, from a component focused on mapping artistic and cultural narratives of smartness. The data derive from online semi-structured interviews with six creators (artists and designers) who develop visions of smart homes or design smart home technologies. Interviews were conducted primarily in English, with one interview carried out in Polish. The conversations explore how these practitioners understand the idea of a “smart home” and position themselves in relation to technology (e.g. as techno-enthusiasts or techno-sceptics). Participants discuss their projects and practices, including the types of works they produce, the institutional and financial contexts in which they operate, and the conceptual frameworks they use to approach smart homes. Across the interviews, attention is paid to themes such as sustainability, inclusivity, security and privacy, as well as gender and other intersecting social categories. The dataset further documents how the creators think about power relations and care in domestic settings, their intended audiences, and the social or environmental impacts they hope to achieve, along with their inspirations and engagements with popular and cultural representations of future homes. The dataset is a result of the project “SMARTUP: Smart(ening up the modern) home – Redesigning power dynamics through domestic space digitalisation”. This research was funded by the National Science Center in Poland [grant number: 2021/03/Y/HS6/00250] as part of the ERA-Net Cofund CHANSE “Collaboration of Humanities and Social Sciences in Europe”. Community Centres as Sites of Translation: Placemaking in Edinburgh
This article presents a research project comprising a series of community initiatives in Edinburgh, a city which displays a disproportionately English-heavy linguistic profile, despite the cosmopolitan influences of both migration and tourism. Our case study created sites that can be conceptualised as translation spaces, where the dominant direction of translation is challenged and critiqued, or even temporarily reversed to reclaim urban space. The research team collaborated with local libraries and community centres to establish several sites of translation. This paper focuses on one key site: a series of art workshops led by refugee artists. Drawing upon the concept of translation space from Translation Studies, we explicitly thematised the role of language(s) and language exchange in these microsites, so that language traffic and dynamics could be observed, discussed, and challenged. In this way, this article contributes to the study of translation space in two aspects. Firstly, it demonstrates how contested language spaces can be analysed through translation practices manifested in various material modes, including interpretations (or, oral translations) provided by participants for one another in art workshops, and intersemiotic translation, from feelings through languages to artwork. Secondly, the paper reflects on how creating such microsites of translation can contribute to resisting the dominant direction of translation in the city
Communicative community and its community-specific lexis on the example of interpersonal training groups
The article aims to investigate the development of communicative community in the context of group development and the analysis of selected examples of a community-specific vocabulary. Particular emphasis is to be placed on meanings emerging during the communication process from the cognitive linguistic perspective, including the theory of conceptual integration. The author’s personal experience of participating in interpersonal training and the fascination with processes mentioned above contributed greatly to the creation of this paper.
