Formation of “Good” and “Bad” Words in French
The article is a presentation of complex formations containing the elements bon, mauvais, bien, and mal, both from a morphological and semantic points of view. The examples, taken mainly from Le Petit Robert and from the specialised website Les expressions françaises décortiqués, have been classified into derived, compound forms, expressions, and locutions. The fact of observing the modification of meaning brought about by the addition of the cited lexemes (independent or linked) constitutes the essential object of this text. The elements bon, mauvais, bien, and mal often lose their primary meaning in the word-formation process and simultaneously create formal and semantic neologisms with diverse functions, e.g., phatic (bonjour, bon appétit), euphemistic (malvoyant) or pejorative (bonasse). Both the created lexemes and the phrastic units containing the quoted formants belong mostly to the basic stock of French vocabulary with a significant frequency of use.
Wastewater as a Driver of Heavy Metal Pollution in River Catchments – a study of possible scenarios
Heavy metal pollution is one of the main problems of the Baltic Sea, caused by the inflow of large loads with river waters. Heavy metals can enter rivers i.a. from point sources such as wastewater treatment plants and industrial plants with inadequately-treated wastewater. The present article examines (i) the impact of WWTPs and industrial facilities on the pollution of the Pilica River, (ii) heavy metal loads along its continuum, and (iii) the identification of common pollution patterns in wastewater and river water, and the effect of their physicochemical properties.
Among WWTPs, the highest heavy metal concentrations are generated by the smallest plants, and the highest loads by the largest ones, which is related to the size of their flow. In addition, industrial plants are significant sources of point pollution of rivers, with arsenic, tin, zinc, cobalt, copper, molybdenum, nickel, lead, chromium, mercury and barium being detected in wastewater. The most common heavy metal in the Pilica was found to be Barium, with the highest loads observed in winter (66.29-216.98 kg/day). In addition to Ba, depending on the season, arsenic, copper and nickel were also detected.
The article takes an innovative approach employing two data calculation variants, which allowed for a comprehensive analysis that captured both typical and less predictable scenarios of river pollution. It also presents an example of modification of the sedimentation-filtration system as a sustainable solution for removing heavy metals from treated wastewater. The research was conducted as part of the Farmikro Project, funded entirely by the National Science Centre, Poland, Opus 22 (Project No. 2021/43/B/ST10/01076)
Postcolonial Fears in a Haunted House. Themes of Trauma and the Search for Identity in Young Adult Horror Fiction "She Is a Haunting" by Trang Thanh Tran
The analysis presented in the article concerns the debut novel of young adult horror fiction entitled She Is a Haunting by Trang Thanh Tran. The interpretation of horror motifs in the novel is presented from the point of view of postcolonial studies. The plot of the novel centers on 17-year-old Jade Nguyen, who is an American of Vietnamese descent. The girl returns to her parents’ country to get money for college. She stays in an old house, which turns out to be haunted by ghosts. Jade begins her own investigation to unravel the mystery of the haunted house. She discovers the horrifying truth about the murderous activities of French colonizers in Vietnam. Tran uses the motif of horror to tell the story of the trauma of unrequited colonialism and the crimes associated with it. In addition, the book explores themes of the search for one’s own identity. The main story line is complemented by the contexts of historical and contemporary racism and the issue of migration and the Vietnamese diaspora in the United States. The text’s research questions revolve around the thematic symbiosis of horror with the postcolonial perspective (including in relation to young adult fiction literature): how does the novel address historical horror related to colonialism?; how can the creations of the haunted house and ghosts be interpreted in postcolonial terms? The article also presents the genre contexts of horror that appear on the pages of the novel. The analytical part of the text is preceded by a theoretical description, focusing on the relationship between young adult fiction and horror conventions
Известное и неизвестное. Заметки о загадочной биографии Алессандро Гуаньини
The purpose of this article is to introduce Alessandro Guagnini (ca. 1538–1614), an Italian who arrived in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth as a soldier, but is remembered as the author of Sarmatiae Europeae descriptio (1574, 1578) and Kronika Sarmacyey Europskiey (1611, 1612). This work, a historical-geographical compilation depicting the history of Poland and its neighbours, achieved considerable publishing success. Despite the fact that more than 400 years have passed since its most important editions, various mysteries about the description of Sarmatia and its author still arise. These include Guagnini’s connections with another Polish historian, Maciej Stryjkowski, who accused the Italian of plagiarism, the case of the 1574 edition, the different variants of the edition, Guagnini’s potential authorship of the Vita Despothi Principis Moldaviae, potential collaborators, other activities of the Italian soldier and attempts to present his connections with important figures of the period in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth as well as in other parts of Europe. The example of Alexander Gwagnin demonstrates all the difficulties associated with the study of biography, especially concerning figures who are not the most important figures in the history, and, despite these obstacles, also obtaining new answers that inspire further questions about the biography. Dzieło to, będące kompilacją historyczno-geograficzną przedstawiającą dzieje Polski i jej sąsiadów, odniosło znaczny sukces wydawniczy.
The Haunted House and Spectres of Fascism: Alison Rumfitt’s "Tell Me I’m Worthless"
This article explores the motif of the haunted house in Alison Rumfitt’s "Tell Me I’m Worthless" and situates the novel among other works that employ the same trope, including Shirley Jackson’s "The Haunting of Hill House" and Daphne du Maurier’s "Rebecca". Rumfitt uses the haunted house to address the resurgence of fascism — an especially relevant context given the Brexit era in which the novel was written — and the ways in which it oppresses women and marginalized groups. The political dimension of the haunted house motif is conveyed not only through the connection between the demonic mansion and fascism, but also through the class aspect of grand aristocratic villas, where corruption and hatred toward the lower classes begin to take the form of hauntings. This article examines the political dimensions of the haunted house motif, arguing that its significance extends beyond "Tell Me I’m Worthless" to other narratives as well. Rumfitt’s novel has been interpreted, among other things, in the context of Mary Russo’s concept of the female grotesque and Barbara Creed’s notion of female monstrosity. Additionally, the article situates Rumfitt’s novel within Mark Fisher’s concept of hauntology, positioning its haunted house within what the author of "The Weird and the Eerie" defines as the eerie
