The asymptotic of the Mullins-Sekerka and the area-preserving curvature flow in the planar flat torus

    No full text
We study the asymptotic behavior of flat flow solutions to the periodic and planar two-phase Mullins-Sekerka flow and area-preserving curvature flow. We show that flat flows converge to either a finite union of equally sized disjoint disks or to a finite union of disjoint strips or to the complement of these configurations exponentially fast. A key ingredient in our approach is the derivation of a sharp quantitative Alexandrov inequality for periodic smooth sets

Search for Traces - On the Beauty of Time

Traces are everywhere. They emerge through touch, use, and time. They are fleeting, fragmentary, and incomplete. They can appear aesthetic or disturbing, be read as signs of value or decay. They serve as clues and, in their present existence, form a bridge between past and future. At the center of this thesis lies the question of how traces of age and use can infuse space with meaning and aesthetic quality, rather than being read solely as signs of deterioration. The aim is to reveal their aesthetic, cultural, and atmospheric potential and to show how traces can become a consciously employed design tool. The work examines the role they play in the perception, memory, and authenticity of spaces, and how they shape our understanding of transience. Drawing on everyday material phenomena, theoretical positions on perception, atmosphere, and aesthetics are incorporated. Texts by Hannah Arendt, Juhani Pallasmaa, Gaston Bachelard, Walter Benjamin, and Jacques Derrida form the theoretical foundation for understanding traces as carriers of meaning. These reflections are complemented by three case studies from art, curation, and architecture: Heidi Bucher’s skin rooms, the Sigmund Freud Museum following the curatorial concept by Monika Pessler, and Peter Zumthor’s Therme Vals. Together, they illustrate how traces can function in different contexts as expressions of memory, absence, and ongoing process. As a concluding perspective, the work also reflects on the role of traces within a sustainable and resource-conscious building culture.Architecture is understood here as a medium in which permanence and change coexist. Traces are not regarded as defects, but as the visible memory of the built environment

Transformation of the Globusprovisorium in Zurich into an Urban River Bath

The Globusprovisorium is located in one of Zurich's most central locations, near the main railway station and directly on the banks of the Limmat River. It was originally intended as a temporary building to house the Globus department store until the building on Bahnhofstrasse was completed. Demolition was planned for 1968. Nevertheless, it has been preserved to this day and has undergone a variety of uses and history over time. However, many Zurich residents still consider it an eyesore. Numerous discussions and proposals have centred on its future in recent decades. Findings from the Forum Papierwerd show that the area should become a public space for everyone in the future. This thesis develops an alternative proposal for continuing to build on the existing structure. Currently, it blocks access to the water, interrupts the spatial continuity along the Limmat and obstructs the view of the river. As a result, the potential of the site as a public space is not being fully exploited. A transformation into a transparent, accessible and predominantly public structure is therefore advocated. The thesis deals with the Globus temporary building and its urban integration as well as its proximity to the river. To approach the location, I used the theory of strollology developed by Lucius Burckhardt. It understands urban space as a sequence of perceptual sequences. The walk becomes a method for revealing breaks, transitions and potential in urban space. Strollology revealed that these spatial sequences not only reveal potential and discontinuities but also express Zurich's urban identity. A river bath at this location would capture and strengthen this identity by serving as a place of openness, encounter and connection between the city and the water. This combination of perception analysis and identity issues forms the basis of this work. The design project then develops a proposal for a river pool. The existing structure of the Globus Provisorium is transformed into an open pavilion structure that provides the infrastructure for swimming in the Limmat

Spatial Rhythms – and the Shape of the Instant

    No full text
This reflection seeks to develop an understanding of rhythm as a spatio-temporal ordering principle at the intersection of architecture and music. Its point of departure is the phenomenological finding of the instant as condensed present and the insight that architectural experience is always temporally mediated. When rhythm, through architecture, becomes a concept of space, architecture, viewed through the prism of rhythm, reveals itself as an art of time.Theoretically, the work connects lines from the history of concepts and perception to rhythmanalytical approaches. Music serves as a field of inquiry in which the shift from counted meter to shaped, polytemporal time becomes apparent. In architecture, rhythm is conceived as a relation of recurrence and deviation, as mediation between figure and ground, horizontal and vertical, movement and pause. Methodologically, this reflection works with juxtapositions and translates the argument into a site-specific study in Linz (Obere Donaulände/Römerbergtunnel). The comparison between a linear, isorhythmic passage and an event-based urban space shows how absolute and relative temporal orders shape urban experience. From this, the work derives a design framework: the completion of an urban axis toward the Danube with a twin tower pair as a threshold figure. The results profile rhythm as a formative, structural, non-decorative principle. Architecture appears as an emergent form in the act of becoming, which steers perception, frames social practices, and is intended to render temporal stratifications legible

Unifying Quantum-Well and Collector Space-Charge Dynamics in Resonant-Tunneling-Diodes: Impact on Maximum Oscillation Frequency

    No full text
We present a simple and general model for a small-signal admittance of double-barrier resonant-tunneling-diodes (RTDs). The model accounts for both the effect of traveling electrons in the RTD collector spacer and the dynamics of the electron charge in the RTD quantum well. Using the model, we evaluate how the electron travel time through the collector influences the maximum oscillation frequency of state-of-the-art RTDs. The analysis shows that the impact of the traveling electrons is more pronounced in RTDs with high current density, and that a shorter collector spacer is advantageous for high-frequency RTD oscillators. However, if electrons travel ballistically through the spacer, their effect is nearly negligible

Modeling Spin-Orbit Torques in Advanced Magnetoresistive Devices

    Get PDF
The continued scaling of conventional semiconductor devices increases standby power consumption, necessitating the development of more energy-efficient technologies. Non-volatile spin-orbit torque magnetoresistive random access memory (SOT-MRAM) addresses this by eliminating standby power while promising improved switching speeds, power consumption, and endurance. Its operation depends on utilizing current-induced spin-orbit torques (SOTs) to switch the magnetization of ferromagnetic (FM) layers. Switching simulations can provide valuable insight, which is essential for optimizing device performance and reducing research and development costs. This work focuses on developing advanced methods for modeling SOTs and the resulting magnetization dynamics.A spin and charge transport solver was extended to include the spin Hall effect and boundary conditions (BCs) for nonmagnetic (NM)/FM interfaces. AccurateSOT modeling requires the inclusion of interfacial spin-orbit coupling (SOC) effects. Hence, BCs based on a perturbative treatment of the Rashba SOC were developed, verified against experimental data, and applied to analyze the thickness dependence of SOTs in NM/FM bilayers and FM/NM/FM trilayers. The results show that thin NM layers offer practical advantages over conventionally thick layers due to enhanced interfacial effects. A non-perturbative treatment of interfacial SOC was also developed to capture the complex angular dependence of SOTs. The resulting BCs were validated against published results, showing good agreement and that the Rashba-Edelstein effect is primarily responsible for the pronounced angular dependence and Field-like SOT. A Landau-Lifschitz-Gilbert equation solver was extended to include the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and SOTs. The simulation framework was demonstrated for several SOT-induced switching mechanisms, including in-plane switching of an FM with shape anisotropy, and switching of an FM with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy assisted by either an external magnetic field or spin-transfer torque. The simulations reveal complex domain wall dynamics consistent with experimental observations. Finally, two advanced field-free switching concepts employing either built-in stray fields or trilayer SOTs were investigated, showing promising applications in SOT-MRAM

Enhancing starch hydrolysate syrup purification: long-term ultrafiltration membrane performance under industrial conditions

    No full text
Ultrafiltration (UF) membranes based on Polyethersulfone (PES) are extensively used in food and bioprocessing industries for their good mechanical robustness and chemical resistance. In starch and sweetener production, these membranes play a vital role in clarifying and purifying carbohydrate-rich syrups. However, sustaining membrane performance under industrial conditions, characterised by elevated temperatures, high pressures, and chemically complex feed solutions, remains a significant challenge due to progressive fouling, membrane ageing, and irreversible performance decline. This study investigates the long-term performance (32h) of the GR90PP tight PES UF membrane (5 kDa cut-off) from Alfa Laval, operated under representative industrial conditions (60 °C, 8 bar) and using a real DE40 starch hydrolysate syrup. The study focuses on quantifying operational stability and fouling–cleaning behaviour across four filtration-cleaning cycles, including analysis of flux evolution, cleaning efficiency, solute rejection, and membrane integrity. Results revelaled a progressive Relative Flux Reduction (RFR), averaging 44 %, alongside a significant Flux Recovery Ratio (FRR) after cleaning, peaking at 80 % after the last alkaline rinse. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) analysis confirmed a gradual build-up of fouling layer, predominantly organic in nature, contributing to reduced permeability and moderate irreversible fouling (average 21 %). Alkaline cleaning proved significantly more effective than acidic cleaning, highlighting the dominance of organic fouling mechanisms. Overall, the GR90PP membrane demonstrated strong operational stability, chemical compatibility, and cleaning resilience under extended high-temperature UF operation, supporting its suitability for processing of carbohydrate-rich products. These findings provide practical insights for optimising cleaning protocols, defining cleaning frequency, and adjusting operational parameters to sustain membrane performance in industrial food applications
