Revealing the Intricate Structure of Surface Phases of Methanol on In₂O₃(111)
Research on sustainable energy has intensified to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, especially CO₂. One promising strategy is the catalytic reduction of CO₂ to methanol, and indium oxide (In₂O₃) has emerged as a highly efficient catalyst, with high turnover rates and selectivity. This work investigates methanol, the end product of CO₂ reduction, and its interaction with the In₂O₃(111) surface. Utilizing an ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) environment, this study combines temperature-programmed desorption (TPD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), noncontact atomic force microscopy (nc-AFM), scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The coverages investigated range from 1 to 12 methanol molecules per unit cell. The results are compared to water adsorption on In₂O₃(111), as the chemical behavior of both molecules is similar in many respects. At low coverage, the adsorption patterns and interactions with the In₂O₃(111) surface mirror those seen with water, including dissociative and molecular adsorption. The first three methanol molecules dissociate at specific sites within the surface unit cell, while molecular adsorption becomes favored for subsequent molecules at temperatures below 300 K. At the highest coverage (before multilayer adsorption) methanol and water exhibit distinct structures due to their differing hydrogen bonding capabilities
Earth Observation and machine learning for advanced crop yield forecasting
Given that 13% of global food production goes to waste in the supply chain, optimised resource management is essential to reduce both food waste and hunger. Crop yield forecasts enable decision-makers to better manage stocks and guide the import and export of crops. Despite enormous efforts over the past decades to provide reliable crop yield forecasts, their accuracy is often inadequate due to data scarcity and the underestimation of the impact of extreme events, such as droughts, on crop yields. Currently used models - both machine learning and process-based - perform insufficiently when too little crop yield data or predictor data is available for a certain region or conditions. Therefore, in this thesis, I focused on three research question: How do machine learning and EO based crop yield forecasting systems perform in drought years? How can we improve crop yield forecasting in data-scarce situations? Can we use this information to also estimate yield losses caused by other extremes, like war-related yield losses? In the first paper of this thesis, I demonstrated how drought-related crop yield losses can be detected early but remain underestimated in current crop yield forecasting systems. Thus, I concluded that additional data from drought years is required to accurately capture the impacts of droughts on crop yields. In the second paper, I showed how transfer learning — a novel machine learning technique that trains and tests a model across different domains — can address the issue of data scarcity. Specifically, I trained a field-scale crop yield forecasting model at the regional scale and fine-tuned it using only a limited number of field-scale samples. In the third paper, I returned to forecasting crop yields during extreme events: estimating war-related crop yield losses in Ukraine using transfer learning. Although crop yield losses remained underestimated, transfer learning led to significantly improved crop yield forecasts in both average years and during the war.Going forward, I identified two main steps to further advance crop yield forecasting: (1) expand the use of transfer learning for crop yield forecasting in any data-scarce situation, and (2) further improve forecasting during extreme events such as droughts and conflicts. Through this thesis, I contributed to improved crop yield forecasting in data-scarce situations and during extreme events, which will allow decision-makers to better manage stocks and guide imports and exports to reduce hunger in a changing climate
Applying a Standardized Benchmarking Framework to Evaluate AI Methods for Precipitation Downscaling over Australia
Downscaling techniques are essential for refining coarse-resolution climate projections to scales relevant for local and regional impact assessments, with artificial intelligence (AI) emerging as a promising approach for this task. However, a standardized benchmarking framework for evaluating these AI-based downscaling methods has been lacking. This study presents the first evaluation of AI-based downscaling methods using established performance expectations within a standardized benchmarking framework. Three machine learning (ML) models, including a generative diffusion model, a vision transformer, and a recurrent neural network, are assessed against observational data and compared with 24 simulations by regional climate models (RCMs). The evaluation employs minimum standard metrics focused on four fundamental rainfall characteristics across Australia: total precipitation, spatial distribution, seasonal cycle, and temporal trends. Results show that all three ML models and ten RCMs meet the minimum performance benchmarks, with rankings varying depending on the rainfall characteristic and region assessed. ML models demonstrate comparable performance to RCMs while offering substantial computational advantages. This highlights the potential of ML models to supplement traditional downscaled simulations, thereby enhancing climate projection ensembles and improving uncertainty quantification. Such an approach aligns with recommendations advocating for diverse modeling methodologies in national assessments. By addressing a critical gap through a standardized evaluation framework, this work provides a comprehensive benchmark dataset comprising ML and RCM outputs for Australian precipitation, facilitating the evaluation of emerging AI downscaling approaches and contributing to the standardization of regional climate modeling practice

Investigating Spectral Biomarker Candidates for Migratory Potential in Cancer Cells Using Micro-FTIR and O-PTIR Spectroscopy
Routine diagnostic practice for cancer and metastasis relies on a time-consuming staining process and the use of antibodies to detect selected molecular markers and is hence limited by a lack of real-time data and the availability of molecular information. Against this background, techniques based on rapid chemical analysis to identify migratory properties are highly desirable. Fourier-Transform Infrared (FTIR) microspectroscopy has a long history in the label-free identification of infrared marker bands for cancer detection. However, it requires extensive postprocessing of the acquired spectra, is of limited suitability for analysis in aqueous environments, and has poor spatial resolution. To overcome these challenges, we are using a new method termed Optical Photothermal Infrared (O-PTIR) spectroscopy to detect local absorption to establish potential IR tumor markers and classification models. We report on experimental outcomes using machine learning and FTIR microspectroscopy for the classification of cells and the analysis of spectral features reflecting cancer and migratory properties, comparing a commercial FTIR microspectrometer to a custom-built O-PTIR instrument dedicated to spectroscopic measurement and imaging in microfluidic channels
Development and Evaluation of Machine Learning Algorithms for Anomaly Detection in Building Technology Consumption Data
Schlüsselbegriffe: KI, Gebäude, Verbrauchsdaten, AnomalieerkennungAs buildings account for a large share of global energy use, the EU is pushing for the retrofitting of sensors to enable consumption data collection. While this already enables the provision of basic KPIs, additional value can be created by analysing the resulting data streams in real-time for anomalous behaviours, which may indicate energy inefficiencies or technical issues. This thesis addresses the questions of how machine learning algorithms can be applied in this context, focusing on which methods are best suited for anomaly detection and on how such anomalies can be systematically classified. The methodology for answering these questions combines expert interviews, a comprehensive literature review, and a quantitative performance assessment of different machine learning models. Furthermore, a prototype software architecture was developed to integrate predictive and classification tasks into a holistic anomaly detection framework, where predictive models can serve as effective providers of "normal" consumption values, with anomalies identified and classified in their deviations from these predictions. The results from the model comparison show that XGBoost consistently achieved the best performance across both prediction and classification tasks, while LSTM, GRU, TCN, Auto-Encoders, and Transformers each excelled under specific conditions.Since the data capturing is still in its roll-out phase, the study was partly constrained by limited datasets. Nevertheless, this thesis contributes a comparative evaluation of algorithms for predictive maintenance and anomaly classification in building systems and provides a foundation for a scalable, portfolio-level monitoring solution. Keywords: buildings, consumption data, anomaly detection, anomaly classificatio
