    No full text
The work is divided into two main phases. In the first phase, a series of cuboid samples were produced using varied LPBF process parameters to explore the effects of volumetric energy density (VED) on microstructural characteristics such as porosity, melt pool morphology, and sub-grain structure. A detailed examination was undertaken by employing Light Optical Microscopy (LOM) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) with the samples being cut along and perpendicular to the build direction. The second phase focused on mechanical behavior and anisotropy. In this regard, smooth dog-bone (SDB) tensile samples were made with seven different angles (0° to 90° relative to the build platform) and subjected to uniaxial tension test. The deformation of tensile specimens was measured by Digital Image Correlation (DIC) during the loading process, and some aspects of the fracture processes were also examined with a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The results revealed a strong dependence of tensile strength and ductility on build orientation, highlighting directional mechanical anisotropy. Fractography confirmed that failure modes transitioned from lower ductility in the 0° samples to more ductile in the 45° and 90° orientations, consistent with melt pool and grain structure observations.Overall, the outcomes reinforce the point of significance in calibration of process factors to obtain the desired microstructure and mechanical properties in printed SS316L. This study provides valuable guidelines for tailoring LPBF process inputs to control anisotropy and improve reliability in structural applications

Europe is experiencing a renewed appreciation for overnight rail travel. Growing demands forclimate protection, the desire for efficient connections, and the need for peace and security are drawing attention to trains that allow passengers to sleep while they travel. Decisive factors in the acceptance of this mode of transport include not only travel time and price, but also the actual on-board experience. This includes practical interior design with ample luggage storage, comfortable seating and sleeping areas, a reliable power supply and connectivity, as well as services offering dependable support and a suitable range of catering options.Against this backdrop, Chapter 2 of this thesis first examines the importance of needs-based carriage design through a literature review. It then classifies the objective and subjective determinants of transport mode choice and derives the theoretical framework. Building on this,an online survey forms the basis of the empirical study in Chapters 3 and 4. It was distributed via flyers with QR-codes on night and day trains, as well as digitally on relevant internet platforms. A total of 1,883 questionnaires were completed between August 2024 and March 2025. The survey recorded respondents’ sociodemographic characteristics, social structure, motives for choosing a mode of transport, travel purpose and durations, as well as positive and negative experiences during the journey. Additionally, a moderated focus group discussion washeld at the Vienna University of Technology on 3rd April 2025. This qualitative discussion addressed various aspects of night train travel and expanded on the survey findings. The results indicate that the design of night train carriages should consider both the objectiveand subjective needs of passengers, as these significantly impact their perception of comfortand satisfaction, thus influencing their choice of transport. The surveys show that most users are between 20 and 50 years old and travel for short to medium durations (up to seven days) for leisure purposes. The most frequently cited motives are environmental awareness, time savings and less stressful travel. The most frequently cited negative factors in the context of sleep quality and overall travel experience on night trains are strong train movements, noise from fellow passengers and from outside, uncomfortable sleeping accommodations, lack of luggagestorage facilities, and unfavorable temperature and humidity conditions. On the other hand, perceived safety on the train, securely stowed luggage, travel experience, and friendly train staffare highlighted as positive factors. For future train carriages, Chapter 4.8 presents acomprehensive list of recommendations for action regarding night train equipment. The measures contained therein reflect the respondents’ requirements for functional and comfort elements, technical elements, as well as information and service elements

Transforming STEM Education with Extended Reality: A Replicable Framework for University Integration

    No full text
The integration of immersive technologies like extended reality has the potential to transform Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics education, particularly in learning factory environments. Although extended reality has the potential to enhance student engagement and skill acquisition, its adoption in higher education remains inconsistent and fragmented. This paper proposes a structured framework for systematically integrating extended reality into university-level education, using the Vienna University of Technology as a case study. The framework outlines essential elements for successful extended reality adoption, including 3D content development, cross-platform compatibility, staff training, support systems, and resource management. Key findings highlight the benefits of collaborative and immersive learning, along with challenges such as content complexity, hardware limitations, and accessibility. The results serve as a replicable framework for other learning environments to implement extended reality technologies effectively in higher multidisciplinary education

Suitability of copper sulphate pentahydrate for thermochemical energy storage in a suspension reactor

    No full text
This study investigates the performance of copper sulphate pentahydrate in the context of thermochemical energy storage in a three-phase suspension reactor using oil as the inert suspension medium. The suspension approach aims to overcome common limitations of the salt hydrate, such as poor heat transfer, slow hydration, and poor cycle stability over several dehydration-hydration cycles by avoiding agglomeration and employing liquid water for hydration. Suspension density measurements show that suspensions with up to 30 wt% oil maintain comparable volumetric energy densities (~1 GJ m⁻³) to bulk salt, despite oil dilution. Dehydration rates reach up to 1.7·10⁻³s⁻¹ at 130 °C, and flash dehydration achieves over 98.66 ± 0.19 % conversion within 5 min, confirming fast reaction kinetics under optimal heat input. Cycle stability is demonstrated over 30 dehydration-hydration cycles in a mineral‑silicone oil mixture and 15 cycles in high-oleic sunflower oil, with minimal performance loss and final hydration levels of 99.25 ± 0.11 % after 30 runs. In contrast, rapeseed oil degraded quickly in only 10 cycles, limiting its suitability and highlighting the importance of a high oleic acid content for thermal stability. Temperature lifts of up to 17.7 ± 0.2 K are recorded during hydration in the batch reactor, while insulated tests at higher salt content achieve up to 66.5 ± 0.3 K (at 60 wt% salt). Overall, CuSO₄·5H₂O in an oil-based suspension shows a promising performance in terms of reaction rate, temperature lift, and cycle stability, making it a viable candidate for thermochemical energy storage in the temperature range of 90–145 °C in the suspension reactor

Designing self-airy shells with unreinforced boundaries

    No full text
A self-Airy membrane shell is a special type of shell structure whose shape coincides with the shell’s Airy stress surface. It provides the convenient property that any polyhedral discretization of such a surface will automatically generate a mesh in funicular equilibrium. A self-Airy shell designed for a uniform vertical load would simply have a constant isotropic Gaussian curvature. However, a challenge in implementing a self-Airy shell in architecture is the lack of a design method, especially in designing unreinforced boundaries. Those are singular planar curves, where the two principal curvatures approach 0 and ∞ individually. This paper presents methods for designing unreinforced boundaries of self-Airy shells, including both smooth and discrete methods. These methods work for both positively and negatively curved surfaces. The proposed methods work linearly without iteration. The preliminary results show that the seemingly very restrictive conditions admit a variety of non-trivial surfaces

Frauengerechter Wohnbau in Österreich: Gleichstellungspolitischer Anspruch und strukturelle Relevanz von Modellprojekten

    Get PDF
Housing is a central social infrastructure and, at the same time, a political field of action in which gender relations and care work remain unequally anchored to this day. Women-friendly housing emerged from feminist planning debates, highlights structural exclusion and questions supposedly neutral standards in planning. By equally involving women as clients, planners and users, and considering everyday practices, diverse household forms and communal spaces, it formulates a fundamental demand for transformation in public housing. This book is the first to focus on women-friendly model housing projects developed in the context of women's politics in Austrian subsidised housing. A qualitative empirical case study traces their development, implementation and long-term effects. The analysis reveals how, in Vienna in particular, innovative ideas have been permanently integrated into funding instruments and planning processes – with international appeal. The book shows how the approaches developed in women-friendly model projects contribute significantly to the gender-sensitive, socially just and sustainable further development of housing construction

Retreat of the Rich? The Impact of High‐Income Household Mobility on Income Segregation

    No full text
This paper investigates how residential mobility among high‐income households shapes income segregation. Drawing on a unique data set covering all household relocations in Vienna between 2011 and 2018, we examine whether the movements of the top income quintile (Q5) reflect a broader ‘retreat of the rich’ to affluent clusters and, if so, how these mobility patterns influence both citywide and localized segregation. Using a combination of global and local dissimilarity indices, as well as a novel scenario‐based approach, we isolate the effects of intra‐urban mobility, income status change and in‐migration. The results show that Q5 households are consistently the most segregated group, and while they mostly tend to move between affluent areas, their mobility alone does not fully explain segregation trends. Instead, we find that the selective out‐migration of lower‐income groups from the same areas plays a critical role in reinforcing segregation. Local scenario analyses reveal that Q5 mobility can either increase or reduce segregation, depending on the spatial context, challenging simple narratives of a retreat of the rich. These findings underscore the importance of analysing segregation as a dynamic, multi‐scalar process shaped by the intersecting mobility patterns of all income groups, even in cities with inclusive housing regimes like Vienna

Jointing things - on Fritz Haller

    No full text
What is architecture when computers redefine it? Two books explore the nature and potential of architecture in the age of artificial intelligence. Inspired by architect Fritz Haller (1924-2012), a virtual persona asks him about the architecture of the future. The first book uses artificial intelligence to network the Internet of Things into a new architecture. The second presents six works by Fritz Haller in the multidisciplinary light of the 2020s and shows them like icons that already contain what was only thought of later. The two volumes are neither historical nor analytical - they are visionary and projective and, in some respects, represent an experiment in themselves. They show an architecture that does rethink and does not evaluate
