    Répartition spatiale d’Ixodes ricinus dans les habitats forestiers

    While previous studies have examined the elevational limits of Ixodes ricinus in Central Europe, this study is the first to investigate the influence of slope orientation on tick distribution in Slovenia. Our results provide new insights into how two important microclimatic factors, temperature and humidity, vary between the northern and south- ern slopes, and how these differences affect the abundance of I. ricinus, a factor that has not been studied in this region before. We found that nymph density was highest on the southern slope at intermediate elevations (720 m) and increased with temperature. In contrast, fewer adult ticks were found on the southern slope compared to the northern slope, most of them at 720 m elevations. The significantly higher abundance of adult ticks on the northern slope is probably related to the cooler temperatures, higher relative humidity, denser ground vegetation and greater availability of hosts such as roe deer. Although these results are regionally specific, they contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the ecological factors influencing the distribution of I. ricinus in Central Europe.Des études antérieures ont examiné les limites d’altitude d’Ixodes ricinus en Europe centrale, mais cette étude est la première à examiner l’influence de l’orientation des pentes sur la répartition des tiques en Slovénie. Nos résultats apportent de nouvelles informations sur la façon dont deux facteurs microclimatiques importants, la température et l’humidité, varient entre les versants nord et sud, et sur l’impact de ces différences sur l’abondance d’I. ricinus, un facteur qui n’avait jamais été étudié dans cette région auparavant. Nous avons constaté que la densité de nymphes était maximale sur le versant sud, à des altitudes intermédiaires (720 m), et qu’elle augmentait avec la température. En revanche, moins de tiques adultes ont été trouvées sur le versant sud que sur le versant nord, la plupart à 720 m d’altitude. L’abondance significativement plus élevée de tiques adultes sur le versant nord est probablement liée aux températures plus fraîches, à une humidité relative plus élevée, à une végétation au sol plus dense et à une plus grande disponibilité d’hôtes tels que les chevreuils. Bien que ces résultats soient spécifiques à chaque région, ils contribuent à une compréhension plus complète des facteurs écologiques influençant la distribution d’I. ricinus en Europe centrale

    The seasonal and circadian population dynamics of Phlebotomine sandflies depend on many environmental factors, especially temperature and humidity. However, the factors that influence fluctuations in species composition are more uncertain. During the regular monitoring of arthropod vectors in the Slovenian coastal region, an interesting change in the population dynamics of these insects was observed, depending on the presence or absence of domestic dogs. To investigate the changes in species composition, we set traps for adult flies at two different locations (Medljan and Cetore) in the Coastal-Karst region (Izola, Slovenia). The collections were carried out in June and July 2017 and 2018. In total, 632 specimens of four species (Phlebotomus papatasi, P. neglectus, P. perniciosus and P. mascittii) were collected in the study area in both years. The females of all sandfly species were examined for the presence of Leishmania parasites in both years, but no Leishmania DNA was detected. The relocation of hunting dogs as potential reservoir hosts from Cetore to another location in early 2018 significantly changed the species composition of the sandflies. Two species, P. neglectus and P. perniciosus, were no longer present at this site.     Reliability of postural sway measures during single-leg stance

    This study examined the test–retest reliability of postural sway measures during single-leg stance in healthy adults. Forty-eight participants performed three 30-s barefoot trials across two sessions separated by 3–5 days, using a force platform to derive eight center of pressure (CoP) variables. Reliability was assessed using conventional reliability metrics (intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), typical error (TE), coefficient of variation (CV), and minimal detectable change (MDC)), as well as recently suggested complementary indices (mean absolute error (MAE) and mean absolute percentage error (MAPE)). Most CoP-derived variables showed good relative reliability, with ICCs ranging from 0.71 to 0.86. Sway velocity and frequency-based measures were the most consistent (e.g., sway velocity AP: ICC = 0.85), while sway area showed higher variability (ICC = 0.71, MAPE = 20.1%). Systematic improvements were observed between sessions, particularly for sway velocity (all p < 0.001) and area (p = 0.002). Absolute error metrics such as MAE and MAPE provided additional insight into individual-level variability, often exceeding values indicated by CV. The findings support the use of single-leg CoP measures in research and clinical assessments but highlight the need for careful interpretation of reliability based on both relative and absolute indices

    Evaluating the effects of managed free-roaming cat populations on prey through stable isotope analysis

    Free-roaming domestic cats (Felis catus) present a major management challenge for animal welfare and biodiversity conservation. Trap-neuter-return (TNR) programs, which include sterilization and return of cats, are increasingly adopted to manage cat populations, often alongside routine food provisioning. However, their effectiveness in reducing cats’ reliance on wild prey remains contested. In this study, we use stable isotope analysis (δ13C, δ15N, δ34S) of cat fur to investigate dietary patterns before and after TNR implementation in the context of concurrent changes in food availability linked to the closure of nearby mink-farming operations. We analyzed samples from 122 cats in a large-scale TNR initiative on a rural property in British Columbia, Canada. These included indoor cats (control), free-roaming cats prior to TNR (Group 1), a subset of Group 1 re-sampled months after food provisioning began (Run 2), and newly sampled cats that had been fed regularly before trapping (Group 2). Local prey and food sources were also analyzed to provide a comparative isotopic baseline. Our results show clear dietary shifts following TNR. Group 1 cats exhibited high isotopic variability and elevated δ15N and δ34S values, consistent with wild prey consumption. In contrast, post-TNR cats showed significantly lower and more homogeneous values, aligning closely with those of indoor, kibble-fed cats. These changes are consistent with a reduced dietary reliance on wildlife and raw mink feed following the combination of TNR with regular provisioning and the cessation of mink operations. These findings demonstrate that regular food provisioning in TNR-managed colonies, particularly when combined with broader environmental changes, can significantly alter cat diets and potentially reduce their dependence on wild prey
