Scalar diversity and second-language processing of scalar inferences
We investigate the processing of scalar inferences in first language (L1) and second language (L2). Expanding beyond the common focus on the scalar inference from ‘some’ to ‘not all’, we examine six scalar expressions: ‘low’, ‘scarce’, ‘might’, ‘some’, ‘most’ and ‘try’. An online sentence-picture verification task was used to measure the frequency and time course of scalar inferences for these expressions. Participants included native English speakers, native Slovenian speakers and Slovenian speakers who spoke English as their L2. The first two groups were tested in their L1, while the third group was tested in their L2. Results showed that the English-L2 group resembled the Slovenian-L1 group more than the English-L1 group in terms of inference frequency. The time course for scalar inference computation was similar across all groups. These findings suggest subtle pragmatic transfer effects from L1 to L2, varying across different scalar expressions
Integracija kulturne dediščine in urbanih podzemnih infrastrukturnih sistemov
This research examines the spatial patterns and economic significance of cultural heritage sites along Beijing’s metro lines, with an emphasis on how urban infrastructure influences heritage preservation. Using spatial analysis methods, including the nearest-neighbor index, geographic concentration index, and location entropy, the research identifies patterns in the distribution of cultural heritage sites - such as ancient architecture, industrial heritage, and tombs - particularly concentrated within Beijing’s second ring road.
The study highlights the connectivity provided by key metro lines, including Lines 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, and 8, which link cultural sites in a point distribution pattern. On these premises, the research established a hierarchical framework to evaluate cultural heritage based on proximity to metro stations, with historical and artistic values being the most significant factors.
The findings suggest that heritage sites within one kilometre of metro stations exert more significant influence on their surrounding areas and emphasize the importance of integrating metro infrastructure with cultural heritage preservation. This study contributes to understanding the spatial dynamics of cultural heritage in urban environments, offering a framework for assessing the impact of heritage within contemporary infrastructure systems.
Practically, the study offers insights for urban planners, metro authorities, and cultural preservation bodies, proposing thematic routes along metro lines—such as Line 1 representing a fusion of Chinese and Western cultures and Line 5 emphasizing religious culture—to enhance cultural tourism. It also emphasizes the need for coordinated efforts between stakeholders to balance heritage conservation and urban development for sustainable growth.Ta raziskava preučuje prostorske vzorce in gospodarski pomen območij kulturne dediščine vzdolž pekinških linij podzemne železnice, s poudarkom na vplivu urbane infrastrukture na ohranjanje dediščine. Z uporabo metod prostorske analize, vključno z indeksom najbližjega soseda, indeksom geografske koncentracije in lokacijsko entropijo, raziskava identificira vzorce v razporeditvi območij kulturne dediščine, kot so starodavna arhitektura, industrijska dediščina in grobnice, ki so skoncentrirane predvsem znotraj drugega obroča Pekinga.
Študija poudarja povezljivost, ki jo zagotavljajo ključne linije podzemne železnice, vključno z linijami 1, 2, 4, 5, 7 in 8, ki povezujejo predmetna območja kulturne dediščine v točkovnem vzorcu razporeditve. Ta študija prispeva k razumevanju prostorske dinamike kulturne dediščine v urbanih okoljih, saj ponuja okvir za vrednotenje vpliva dediščine znotraj sodobnih infrastrukturnih sistemov.
Spraktičnega vidika študija ponuja vpoglede za urbaniste, pristojne organe podzemne železnice in institucije za ohranjanje kulturne dediščine, pri čemer predlaga vzpostavitev tematskih poti vzdolž linij podzemne železnice—na primer linija 1, ki predstavlja spoj kitajske in zahodne kulture, ter linija 5, ki poudarja versko kulturo—za spodbujanje kulturnega turizma. Measuring the proton-proton interaction cross section with hybrid data of the Pierre Auger Observatory
The depth of the maximum of an air shower development, Xmax, as observed with fluorescence telescopes, is among the most sensitive observables for studying the interaction characteristics and primary composition of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays. However, precise measurement of the interaction cross section remains challenging, as standard analyses often rely on assumptions about the composition, which are closely tied to the validity of specific hadronic interaction models. In this work, we discuss a method for the simultaneous estimation of the proton-proton interaction cross section and primary mass composition, addressing the limitations of separate measurements. The inclusion of the Xmax scale into the fit further accounts for systematic uncertainties in the data and theoretical uncertainties in particle production. The performance of the method is evaluated using simulations that include detector responses under realistic conditions and with a particular focus on assessing the systematic uncertainties of the fit
Galactic transient sources with the Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory
A wide variety of Galactic sources show transient emission at soft and hard X-ray energies: low- and high-mass X-ray binaries containing compact objects, isolated neutron stars exhibiting extreme variability as magnetars as well as pulsar-wind nebulae. Although most of them can show emission up to MeV and/or GeV energies, many have not yet been detected in the TeV domain by Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes. In this paper, we explore the feasibility of detecting new Galactic transients with the Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory (CTAO) and the prospects for studying them with Target of Opportunity observations. We show that CTAO will likely detect new sources in the TeV regime, such as the massive microquasars in the Cygnus region, low-mass X-ray binaries with low-viewing angle, flaring emission from the Crab pulsar-wind nebula or other novae explosions, among others. Since some of these sources could also exhibit emission at larger time-scales, we additionally test their detectability at longer exposures. We finally discuss the multiwavelength synergies with other instruments and large astronomical facilities
