Eye tracking i badanie potencjału AI w opisywaniu i generowaniu obrazów: wkład w badania nad sztuką generatywną

    No full text
Over the past few years, AI development has impacted fields like computer vision, image description, and generation. The article explored AI's capability to create descriptions and generate images, comparing these with human perception. Images were examined using eye tracking in a VR art gallery and on a desktop. The study involved expert and AI descriptions of BITSCOPE project images, followed by AI-generated images based on those descriptions, focusing on gaze plot metrics. The research is a part of project Bitscope is supported by the National Science Centre, Poland, under CHIST-ERA IV programme, which has received funding from the EU Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme, under Grant Agreement no 857925

The Landscape of Community Archives in Poland and Its Contextual Environment

    No full text
Community archives, especially in roughly the last ten years, are becoming an increasingly recognized element of cultural heritage in Poland. This is evidenced, among other things, by growing interest from academics and mainstream cultural institutions, including the state archival administration. Further evidence is the establishment in 2020 of an institution funded by the Ministry of Culture called the Center for Community Archives in Warsaw, which aims to support grassroots archives. Although the phenomenon of community archives exists in many countries around the world, the literature focuses in particular on countries from the Anglophone world, especially the United Kingdom and the United States of America. The purpose of this article is to expand the scholarship by describing the contemporary landscape of community archives in Poland. Since the landscape of community archives (regardless of location) is complex and susceptible to a variety of contexts, this description of the phenomenon is presented based on six categories (impact factors) developed during comparative studies of community archives in the United Kingdom, Portugal, and Poland. These contextual conditions, which are also essential parts of the results section describing the contemporary reality of community archives in Poland, are terminologies and definitions of “community archive”; typologies and characteristics of community archives; recent history and social structure of the place; archives’ relations with external partners; funding and support; and legal environment and national archival and heritage system

Prometheus in the Periphery? The Extent, Drivers, and Nature of Innovation in the Urban Peripheries of Chinese Cities

Despite recent correctives to established views on the urban rather than suburban location of innovatory processes, we still know very little about the extent, drivers, and nature of concentrations of innovation in urban peripheries. This article makes several contributions. First, it presents an exploratory spatial data analysis method for identifying innovation centers in urban cores and peripheries from both geographical and functional perspectives. Second, we offer an initial, admittedly simple, econometric testing of some of the most critical drivers of innovation in urban peripheries. Third, we bring greater specificity to conjecture on the nature of innovation activities found in urban cores and peripheries, respectively. Drawing on an extensive time series data set of more than 7 million geocoded patents that were applied for by Chinese applicants between 2009 to 2018, we find that China’s urban peripheries have become more innovative overall, with an increasing number of cities that have developed at least one peripheral innovation center and a growing share of innovation activities in peripheral innovation centers. Governmental interventions, including the planning of polycentric spatial structures, the construction of development zones, high-speed railway stations, and college towns in urban peripheries, are shown to be key drivers underlying the emergence of peripheral innovation centers. Innovation in urban peripheries differs significantly from that in urban cores, being more specialized, less technologically complex, and more reliant on intercity technological collaboration.National Natural Science Foundation of China (52378045; 52008087), research grants of KU Leuven (C14/21/021), the Research Foundation–Flanders (FWO, G0B0223N), Polish National Science Centre (2020/38/A/HS4/00312)

Russell's paradox and the beginnings of mereology

International Symposium "Leśniewski: logic and ontology", World Logic Day: January 14, 2025, Faculty of Philosophy, University of WarsawThe discovery of the title paradox probably took place around 1901. It was published by Russell in 1903 in his book "Principles of Mathematics". Russell’s paradox concerns distributive classes (as extensions of concepts), analyzed by Frege in "Grundgesetze der Arithmetik". This paradox directly indicated that the theory adopted by Frege was contradictory. When Frege learned of this from Russell’s letter, he stated in the afterword to his book that the logical foundations of arithmetic that he had assumed were “shaken.”The research has been supported by the grant from the National Science Centre (NCN), Poland, project no.\ 2021/43/B/HS1/0318

Ochrona gatunkowa to forma ochrony przyrody o niejednorodnej prawnej naturze.

Andrzeja Tretyna. The aim of the exhibition is not only to recall the figure of the outstanding sculptor Prof. Adolf Ryszka (1935–1995), but also to engage in a creative dialogue with his concepts. The starting point for the participating artists became the issue of sculpture in the landscape – a theme particularly close to the Professor’s interests. His work Boundary Stone has served as a kind of signpost in the search for contemporary interpretations of this subject. The exhibition is curated by A. Majewska (gallery Jacek Świderski) and its main organizer is the “Otwarte” Art Association, which invited artists and designers from the Department of Interior Architecture and Sculpture, Faculty of Fine Arts at the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, to take part in the project. The exhibition design was created by Aleksandra Truchel, an architect affiliated with the department. The publication features two texts: one by Dorota Grubba-Thiede, an art historian and critic, and another by Rafał Boettner-Łubowski, a visual artist also engaged in art theory and criticism. The event was held under the honorary patronage of Paweł Gulewski, Mayor of the City of Toruń, and Prof. Andrzej Tretyn, Rector of the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń. Horror VR as a tool supporting the emotional training of students of the uniformed services. Results of a research experiment

    No full text
One of the most popular video game genres that have been attracting the attention of players for years is horror games. Their unique character is that they evoke a range of strong emotions. From a VR perspective, the above game genre gains a new, and more immersive dimension and, as a result, enables particularly intense experiences. The presented research was a pedagogical experiment and was conducted in 2024. The results covered a group of 140 players – students of the uniformed services. The selection for the research was intentional. The study used a quantitative-and-qualitative method. The collected data showed that VR horror games evoke statistically significantly higher levels of emotions such as fear, disgust, vigilance, ecstasy, and admiration, compared with PC horror games. According to the respondents, this tool supports learning how to manage stress, panic, and negative emotions, while offering an interesting and credible form of presentation. Consequently, it may be applied in emotional training. Compared with traditional training methods, VR horror provides a more immersive, emotionally intense experience, suggesting potential added value in this respect. Statistical calculations were performed using the Student’s T test and the Mann Whitney U test. During the analyses, the mean, mode, as well as the minimum, and maximum values were also determined. This study is not without limitations. It includes a relatively small and homogeneous sample limited to Polish students of the uniformed services. These constraints should be taken into account when interpreting the findings

Selected problems of remote participation in the meetings of corporate governing bodies and housing communities

The social changes brought about by the development of information tech-nologies affect various spheres of life, including private law. The possibilities of remote communication are used for the entry into contracts, but the remote mode has also been allowed for the conduct of meetings of governing bodies in corporate legal entities. The legislator has allowed meetings to be held and resolutions to be passed using remote communication tools in the case of elective corpo-rate governing bodies. The introduction of such legal regulations raises questions about the admis-sibility of their wider application also with regard to such persons and bodies for which such solutions were not provided, e.g., in housing communities. Do-ubts also arise with regard to the legal consequences of the application of such solutions, such as questions concerning the validity of votes and the moment at which they produce legal effects. Furthermore, it should be determined how to classify, within the framework of traditional concepts of private law, the situation of voting by means of remote communication tools

The impact of chronotype on mental health and subjective well-being: the mediating role of emotion regulation strategies

    No full text
Preprint artykułu.Multiple studies have shown that individuals with an evening chronotype tend to report greater mental health problems, such as higher levels of depression and reduced well-being, compared to those with a morning chronotype. The adverse outcomes associated with eveningness appear to be linked to a combination of biological, social, and psychological factors. In the present study, we investigated the relationship between chronotype and two emotion regulation strategies: cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression. Furthermore, we explored whether these strategies mediate the association between chronotype and indicators of mental health and well-being. Participants completed the Composite Scale of Morningness (CSM), and based on the established chronotype cut-off criteria, 76 individuals were classified as morning types and 81 as evening types. The total sample consisted of 157 participants (107 women, 50 men; aged 19-42 years, M ± SD: 25.12 ± 4.53 years). All participants completed questionnaires assessing emotion regulation strategies, depressive symptoms, life satisfaction, and positive and negative affect. Evening types scored lower in cognitive reappraisal and well-being, and higher in expressive suppression and depressive symptoms. Controlling for age and gender, we found significant mediation effects, showing that the relationship between chronotype and depressive symptoms and between chronotype and subjective well-being might stem from lower cognitive reappraisal and higher expressive suppression among evening types. These findings suggest that adaptive emotion regulation strategies can positively impact well-being and reduce depressive symptoms, especially among evening types. These findings highlight the importance of targeted interventions to improve emotion regulation strategies in this population. The present study was supported by the National Science Centre in Poland under Grant 2021/41/N/HS6/01903, awarded to Joanna Gorgol-Waleriańczyk

Global Consulting Agencies’ Scandals as a Display of a Failure of Contemporary Narratives about Capitalism

https://policy-failures.uw.edu.pl/?page_id=514 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WVfZbzxtxBQ https://policy-failures.uw.edu.pl/?page_id=571The economic and cultural position of big consulting companies has been growing for the last 50 years. Therefore their activities can be perceived as a crucial part of a phenomenon popularized by American sociologist Charles Wright Mills called “Power Elites''. Today global consulting firms create a problem of global disparity not only by helping elites snowball higher income by means such as tax avoidance, but in sustaining the privileged class with access to power and status. The aim of this paper is to analyze the subject of famous scandals surrounding major consulting agencies as a glimpse into ideological inaccuracies of contemporary capitalism. In recent years however, many scandals concerning the reliability and knowledgeability of the “Big 4” or “Big 3” consulting firms groups have seen the light of day. This raises a question whether the consulting firms' scandals reflect on the negative mechanisms of modern capitalism itself? Specifically, can we pinpoint the phenomenon of consulting firms as the symbolic failure of neoliberalism doctrines? The analysis will examine this in the context of failure studies theory within the framework of neoliberalism, as presented in the “Routledge International Handbook of Failure.” It will consider both classical and modern sociological concepts coined by figures such as Pierre Bourdieu, Immanuel Wallerstein, and Charles Wright Mills, along with empirical evidence of those scandals. “The Big Con” by Marianna Mazzucato and Rosie Clington serves as a main point of reference for the argumentation
