A unified design proposal for shear stress prediction in crossing areas for cross laminated timber at in-plane shear and beam loading conditions

    No full text
Environmental and urbanization challenges during the last few decades encouraged steady growth of mass timber construction where attention is drawn to cross laminated timber (CLT) as one of the most interesting products in terms of mechanical properties, versatility, efficient prefabrication and sustainability. Standardisation and codification regarding testing and design of CLT elements are hence pointed out as one of the main issues within the ongoing revision procedure of Eurocode 5. A consistent and unified design approach for CLT at pure in-plane shear loading conditions (shear walls) and at in-plane beam loading conditions is however still missing. This paper deals with analytical models for the determination of stress components related to pre- dictions of load bearing capacity of CLT with respect to shear failure mode III – shear failure in the crossing areas constituted by the flatwise bonded areas between laminations of adjacent layers. This failure mode is relevant for both pure in-plane shear loading and in-plane beam loading conditions. The paper presents a review of previously proposed models for the prediction of shear stresses in crossing areas of CLT, for both loading conditions. Comparisons between FE-results and model predictions are reviewed indicating significant differences between them concerning the predicted influence of the CLT element lay-up and values of maximum shear stresses. Based on simplifications of models previously presented, a unified design proposal that is based on a rational and consistent mechanical background for both loading situations and that shows overall good agreement with FE-results is presented

A Comparative Study of the Effects of Earthquakes in Different Countries on Target Displacement in Mid-Rise Regular RC Structures

Data from past earthquakes is an important tool to reveal the impact of future earthquakes on engineering structures, especially in earthquake- prone regions. These data are important indicators for revealing the seismic loading effects that structures will be exposed to in future earthquakes. Five different earthquakes from six countries with high seismic risk were selected and were within the scope of this study. The measured peak ground acceleration (PGA) for each earthquake was compared with the suggested PGA for the respective region. Structural analyzes were performed for a reinforced-concrete (RC) building model with four different variables, including the number of storeys, local soil types, building importance class and concrete class. Target displacements specified in the Eurocode-8 were obtained for both the suggested and measured PGA values for each earthquake. The main goal of this study is to reveal whether the proposed and measured PGA values are adequately represented in different countries. We tried to reveal whether the seismic risk was taken into account at a sufficient level. In addition, target displacements have been obtained separately in order to demonstrate whether the measured and suggested PGA values for these countries are adequately represented in structural analysis and evaluations. It was concluded that both seismic risk and target displacements were adequately represented for some earthquakes, while not adequately represented for others. Comments were made about the existing building stock of the countries considering the obtained results

Prediction of compressive strength of concrete at high heating conditions by using artificial neural network-based Bayesian regularization

    No full text
Cement concrete is the most commonly used material today for constructing residential or commercial buildings, industrial parks, or particular components such as tunnel slabs where there is a high risk of fire. This structure requires concrete to be subjected to high temperatures generated by fires. However, concrete under the influence of high temperature has very complex behavior states with deformations, physical and chemical changes as the temperature rises dramatically. In this study, an artificial neural network-based Bayesian regularization (ANN) model is proposed to predict the compressive strength of concrete. The database in this study includes 208 experimental results synthesized from laboratory experiments with 9 input variables related to temperature change and design material composition. The performance of the ANN model was evaluated using K-fold cross- validation and statistical criteria, including mean absolute error (MAE), root mean square error (RMSE), and coefficient of determination (R2). The results show that the proposed ANN model is a reasonable, highly accurate, and useful prediction tool for saving time and minimizing costly experiments

The bachelor thesis shows the dimensioning and calculation of the required surfaces of the reinforcement of the slabs bearing in two directions and the selection of the appropriate standard reinforcing network. The calculation was carried out for slabs observing the cross-sections in the field and over the support. The manual calculation and calculations using Python and Excel are displayed for the same input data. The purpose of the three ways of calculation is to familiarize yourself with the calculation options of the computer programs used and the accuracy of the calculations that the programs offer. By changing the input data, computer programs automatically generate new solutions, which speeds up the calculation process

Building wants to be a part of its own surroundings, not trying to stick out with massivness while hoping to imitate the ambience to accentuate nature's magnificence. Primarily taking L- shaped water element located on the eastern side and thus forming the volume by mild effluxes or indentations. Likewise, outline of the facade clearly represents the guiding light of the concept, with glass imitating reflecting water and block-like greenery pots meandering on the facade
