Stefan Szary, To Be Yourself. A therapeutic self-reflection. Von borowiecky Publishing House, Raqdzymin 2023, pp 163, ISBN 978-83-66480-87-2.
Recenzja książki: Stefan Szary, Być sobą. Autorefleksja terapeutyczna (Be Yourself. To „ja”! Dlaczego? Przede wszystkim po to, by... pomyśleć! Rzeczywiście, choć trudno wyobrazić sobie podręcznik „bycia sobą”, warto przynajmniej pomyśleć, o jakie „bycie” się rozchodzi. Pomyśleć, a „myśl — podpowiada Blaise Pascal —stanowi wielkość człowieka. (…) Cała wielkość człowieka jest w myśli…”. Oznacza to również podjąć ryzyko i wyruszyć w drogę. Idę… mając przed sobą drogowskaz „dobro”. Zapytasz może: quo vadis? Pomyślisz: cóż to za fanaberia w szarej rzeczywistości? Bynajmniej.
Convolutional neural network model for the qualitative evaluation of geometric shape of carrot root
The main objective of the study is the development of an automatic carrot root classification model, marked as CR-NET, with the use of a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). CNN with a constant architecture was built, consistingof an alternating arrangement of five Conv2D, MaxPooling2D and Dropout classes, for which in the Python 3.9 programming language a calculation algorithm was developed. It was found that the classification process of the carrot root images was carried out with an accuracy of 89.06%, meaning that 50 images were misclassified. The highest number of 21 erroneously classified photographs were from the extra class, of which 15 to the first class, thus not resulting in significant loss. However, assuming the number of refuse as the classification basis, the model accuracy greatly increases to 98.69%, as only 6 photographs were erroneously assigned

Innowacyjne rozwiązania prośrodowiskowe a model zarządzania publicznego w strefach podmiejskich w Polsce
Research on suburban zones, which has been carried out for many years, allows us to assume that, as in the case of urban space, suburban zones are predestined to become smart spaces. The smart city, as proposed by Komninos (2019), is understood broadly as an urban region, of which the suburban zone is the second component next to the large city. However, while new technologies are present in cities as innovation centres, their diffusion may be much slower and more diverse in suburban zones, which have been developing in Poland since as late as the system transition. This paper addresses the presence of innovative pro-environmental technologies (IPTs) in suburban zones in Poland in the light of social research. The presence of these solutions was considered in the context of the public management model. The primary data source was a nationwide survey conducted on a representative sample of 939 respondents. The survey showed that innovative pro-environmental solutions developed in suburban communes strongly depend on the governance model. The more traditional the management model, the less innovative commune. The most valuable public management model involves all users of space. Research indicates that the closer it is to a participatory approach, the more effectively innovative pro-environmental solutions are implemented.
Interfield vernal ponds as an ephemeral element of the landscape
One particular example of ephemeral water bodies in agricultural areas is the so-called vernal pools (interfield wetlands). Their occurrence depends on various natural factors, including weather conditions, surface topography, and the intensity of anthropogenic impacts. Vernal ponds are an ephemeral element of the landscape in Northern Poland, where, within the undulating moraines and hilly and rolling terrain, extensive areas of surface water appear after heavy rainfall. They have biocenotic and physiocenotic significance, and their landscape value is most evident in winter and early spring, when they are not usually hidden by vegetation. They are an underappreciated element of the landscape, but considering the ecological importance of these water bodies, it is likely that with the increasing availability of remote sensing imagery, the analysis of their spatial fluctuations and landscape evaluation will become common in the near future
Twofold 6π-Electrocyclization as a Route Toward Multi-Heteroatom-Doped Nanographenes Built on a 1,4-Dihydropyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrrole Core
Here we present a highly versatile synthetic strategy based on twofold 6π-electrocyclization accompanied with HBr elimination as a novel approach towards centrosymmetric multi-heteroatom-doped nanographenes build around an electron-rich 1,4-dihydropyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrrole core. A straightforward synthesis from readily available substrates offers a unique possibility of fusing the 1,4-dihydropyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrrole subunit not only with carbocyclic building blocks, such as electron-deficient phenanthrenes, chrysenes, or [4]helicenes, but also with heterocyclic systems, such as benzo[b]furan and 5-thiatruxene. The clear advantage of this strategy is that there is no requirement to assemble complex scaffolds possessing bromoaryl units since bromine atom is introduced by bromination of 1,4-dihydropyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrrole core which, because of its exceptionally electron-rich character, is straightforward reaction. The obtained χ-shaped and S-shaped nanographenes containing 10 or more fused rings, exhibit visible-range emissions characterized by fluorescence quantum yields reaching 48 %. Computational studies of the reaction mechanism revealed that the 6π-electrocyclization is kinetically favourable over photo-induced direct arylation. Steady-state UV/Visible spectroscopy reveals that upon photoexcitation, the prepared S-shaped N-doped nanographenes undergo mostly radiative relaxation leading to large fluorescence quantum yields. We anticipate that this chemistry will empower the creation of new materials with various functionalities.EU's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under Grant Agreement No 860762;

Dissociation constants of relevant secondary organic aerosol components in the atmosphere
The presented studies focus on measuring the determination of the acidity constant (pKa) of relevant secondary organic aerosol components. For our research, we selected important oxidation products (mainly carboxylic acids) of the most abundant terpene compounds, such as α-pinene, β-pinene, β-caryophyllene, and δ-3-carene. The research covered the synthesis and determination of the acidity constant of selected compounds. We used three methods to measure the acidity constant, i.e., 1H NMR titration, pH-metric titration, Bates-Schwarzenbach spectrophotometric method. Moreover, the pKa values were calculated with Marvin 21.17.0 software to compare the experimentally derived values with those calculated from the chemical structure. pKa values measured with 1H NMR titration ranged from 3.51 ± 0.01 for terebic acid to 5.18 ± 0.06 for β-norcaryophyllonic acid. Moreover, the data determined by the 1H NMR method revealed a good correlation with the data obtained with the commonly used potentiometric and UV-spectroscopic methods (R2 = 0.92). In contrast, the comparison with in silico results exhibits a relatively low correlation (R2Marvin = 0.66). We found that most of the values calculated with the Marvin Program are lower than experimental values obtained with pH-metric titration with an average difference of 0.44 pKa units. For di- and tricarboxylic acids, we obtained two and three pKa values, respectively. A good correlation with the literature values was observed, for example, Howell and Fisher (1958) used pH-metric titration and measured pKa1 and pKa2 to be 4.48 and 5.48, while our results are 4.24 ± 0.10 and 5.40 ± 0.02, respectively.National Science Cente

The Study on Timolol and Its Potential Phototoxicity Using Chemical, In Silico and In Vitro Methods
Timolol (TIM) is a non-selective ß-adrenergic receptor antagonist used orally for the treatment of hypertension and heart attacks, and topically for treating glaucoma; lately, it has also been used in some specific dermatological problems. In the present study, its photodegradation and potential risk of phototoxicity were examined using chemical, in silico and in vitro methods. The UV/VIS irradiated solutions of TIM at pH 1–13 were subjected to LC-UV and UPLC-HRMS/MS analyses showing pseudo first-order kinetics of degradation and several degradation products. The structures of these photodegradants were elucidated by fragmentation path analysis based on high resolution (HR) fragmentation mass spectra, and then used for toxicity evaluation using OSIRIS Property Explorer and Toxtree. Potential risk of phototoxicity was also studied using chemical tests for detecting ROS under UV/VIS irradiation and in vitro tests on BALB/c 3T3 mouse fibroblasts (MTT, NRU and Live/Dead tests). TIM was shown to be potentially phototoxic because of its UV/VIS absorptive properties and generation ROS during irradiation. As was observed in the MTT and NRU tests, the co-treatment of fibroblasts with TIM and UV/VIS light inhibited cell viability, especially when concentrations of the drug were higher than 50 μg/mL
