Fruit availability in tropical forests varies temporally and spatially due to seasonality and environmental heterogeneity, which can be partly explained by topographic variations. Frugivorous species, such as primates, can modulate the selection of habitat use due to this variation in resource availability. We used the resource selection functions (RSF) to evaluate habitat use of three primate species (Saguinus bicolor, Sapajus apella and Chiropotes sagulatus) in a lowland Amazon forest along a topographic gradient in two distinct seasons (dry and rainy). The three species showed differences in habitat use between the seasons. S. bicolor presented preferences for slope areas during rainy season, but uniformly in the dry season. S. apella and C. sagulatus segregated by habitat in the dry season, using valley and plateau, respectively, but used the habitat uniformly in the rainy season. Habitat segregation between S. apella and C. sagulatus is probably associated to differences in foraging strategies when food resources are scarcer. The use of valley by S. apella during this period is possibly related to the higher concentration of palm in these areas, an important food item for this species during fruit shortages. Likewise, the use plateau areas by C. sagulatus was probably associated to the presence of food items typically selected during the dry season. Here we elucidate some basic ecological information for three primate species, and show how RSF models aligned with topographic information can be a feasible tool to build predictive distribution maps to help primate conservation programs.

Turbulence and Gas Transfer Velocities in Sheltered Flooded Forests of the Amazon Basin

Seasonally flooded forests along tropical rivers cover extensive areas, yet the processes driving air-water exchanges of radiatively active gases are uncertain. To quantify the controls on gas transfer velocities, we combined measurements of water-column temperature, meteorology in the forest and adjacent open water, turbulence with an acoustic Doppler velocimeter, gas concentrations, and fluxes with floating chambers. Under cooling, measured turbulence, quantified as the rate of dissipation of turbulent kinetic energy (ε), was similar to buoyancy flux computed from the surface energy budget, indicating convection dominated turbulence production. Under heating, turbulence was suppressed unless winds in the adjacent open water exceeded 1 m/s. Gas transfer velocities obtained from chamber measurements ranged from 1 to 5 cm/hr and were similar to or slightly less than predicted using a turbulence-based surface renewal model computed with measured ε and ε predicted from wind and cooling. ©2019. The evaluation of how species use habitat in areas well conserved is an important tool to understand their ecological niches. In this study, we aimed to determine the diel activity pattern and how inundation height, distance to the nearest water body, number of feline records and presence of baits influence habitat use by two curassow species, Crax globulosa and Pauxi tuberosa, in flooded and unflooded forests in Amazonia. Camera-trap stations were installed in the dry season, during five consecutive years in the flooded forest and three years in unflooded forest. The diel activity patterns of the species in the flooded forest were similar, as they were in flooded and unflooded forest. The number of feline records did not affect curassow distribution in any of the studied environments. However, in unflooded forest, P. tuberosa used sites with baits more often, whereas C. globulosa in flooded florest was more frequently recorded where inundation was shallow. Further, in flooded forest, both species responded to distance to the nearest water body, but in opposite ways: C. globulosa used more often sites near water bodies and P. tuberosa was recorded more often away from water bodies. These results suggest that there is no temporal partitioning in habitat use between the studied curassow species. Rather, the species tend to segregate spatially in response to the distribution of water bodies, possibly reflecting variation in available resources. This study allowed to increase the knowledge of the ecological niche and habitat use by C. globulosa and P. tuberosa, besides providing the first information about iterespecific relation of these species in the Brazilian Amazonian forest.

The community of non-flying small mammals is composed of marsupials and small rodents and its structure may suffer from ecological and historical factors. We compiled inventories of small mammals in the Amazon Basin and functional traits of the species sampled to evaluate the phylogenetic and functional structure of the assemblies. We also evaluated whether functional dispersion and species substitution at assemblies respond to environmental variables. We calculated the phylogenetic and functional diversity to access the structuring patterns of assemblies; we measured the functional dispersion to evaluate the effect of the environment on the functional traits; and we calculated the species substitution, decomposed into the effect of the composition and phylogenetic relationships during substitution, and related it to the environment. The phylogenetic structure of the assemblies was more dispersed than expected at random. There was little variation in functional diversity, with most assemblies more dispersed than expected by chance. The functional dispersion responded to the mean temperature of the warmest quarter probably due to the temperature relation with the physiological performance of the animals; and precipitation of the wettest quarter, which is associated with food availability. The substitution of the species responded to the environmental variables sum of soil bases, mean temperature of the warmest quarter and productivity. The compositional component of species substitution responded to the sum of soil bases, precipitation and geographic distance, while the phylogenetic component responded to the sum of soil bases and productivity. In general, the results suggest a greater weight of the phylogenetic relationships between the species not shared between the assemblies, than between the taxonomic composition of the shared species for the substitution of the species. The community of non-flying small mammals in the Amazon Basin does not happen randomly and is a response to evolutionary history and diversification of the group, and the environment.

Patterns, mechanisms and genetics of speciation in reptiles and amphibians

In this contribution, the aspects of reptile and amphibian speciation that emerged from research performed over the past decade are reviewed. First, this study assesses how patterns and processes of speciation depend on knowing the taxonomy of the group in question, and discuss how integrative taxonomy has contributed to speciation research in these groups. This study then reviews the research on different aspects of speciation in reptiles and amphibians, including biogeography and climatic niches, ecological speciation, the relationship between speciation rates and phenotypic traits, and genetics and genomics. Further, several case studies of speciation in reptiles and amphibians that exemplify many of these themes are discussed. These include studies of integrative taxonomy and biogeography in South American lizards, ecological speciation in European salamanders, speciation and phenotypic evolution in frogs and lizards. The final case study combines genomics and biogeography in tortoises. The field of amphibian and reptile speciation research has steadily moved forward from the assessment of geographic and ecological aspects, to incorporating other dimensions of speciation, such as genetic mechanisms and evolutionary forces. A higher degree of integration among all these dimensions emerges as a goal for future research. © 2019 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland

Protected Areas have several purposes, such as preserving biodiversity, scientific research and the sustainable use of their natural resources. The Serra do Divisor National Park (PNSD), created in 1989 with 837 thousand hectares and located in the western Brazilian Amazon, has about 407 families in its interior that use natural resources and develop productive activities such as agriculture and livestock. The research presented here maps and analyzes the dynamics of land use and coverage of the PNSD and its environment between 1988 and 2018, in order to assist in the current and future management of this Conservation Unit (CU). Landsat images were used to perform supervised classification with the MaxVer algorithm, considering land use and land cover classes: deforestation, land use mosaic, primary vegetation, secondary vegetation, pasture, body of water, others and unobserved area. The accuracy of the classification was defined by the Kappa index (0.893), based on field truth with use of Remotely Piloted Aircraft images. In 30 years, the pasture was the class that obtained the greatest absolute gain (1,986 ha in the interior and 7,661 ha in the surroundings). The areas of secondary vegetation expanded in the study area, which highlights their importance for forest restoration in an agricultural system of cut and burn. Between 2003 and 2018, conversion of forest to pasture and mosaic of uses, in the PNSD buffer area was much faster than in the first evaluation period (1988 to 2003). In the territory of the Nawa indigenous people, located within the PNSD, during the period analyzed, pasture area grew by 481%, higher than in the rest of the PNSD (126%), but lower than the surroundings of the PNSD (2,110%), which requires differentiated management approaches in each of these regions. It was observed that the reduction of the primary forest was much lower in the interior (0.85% or 7,092 ha) than in the surrounding (9.5% or 17,705 ha) of the PNSD in the 30 years evaluated, resulting in lower conversion of forests to pasture or mosaic of uses within the PNSD. The PNSD still conserves 98.5% of primary forests and 48% of the total that was deforested until 2018 are now covered by secondary vegetation. Future scenarios of land use and land cover within the PNSD indicate a worrying future for the conservation of its biodiversity, but situation is even worse for the buffer zone. The results demonstrate the influence of population stability, difficulty of access, restrictions of use imposed by the environmental legislation in the interior of the CU, but counterbalanced by the usufruct of the PNSD carried out by residents of the surrounding area. It is a challenge to formulate public policies and solutions to contain deforestation and agricultural expansion, given the complexity of the causes and factors related to deforestation. The information generated is essential to the management of the PNSD to control irregularities and to initiate proposals for management agreements with the residents who still reside in the interior.
