    The Karyotypic Diversification of Calophysines and the Exallodontus-Propimelodus Clade (Pimelodidae, Siluriformes): A Cytotaxonomic and Evolutionary Approach in Pimelodidae Based on Ancestral State Reconstruction

    Pimelodidae family is one of the most diverse and widely distributed fish groups in South America. Phylogenetic analysis in the family have recently indicated the existence of two main clades: "sorubiminae" and the OCP clade, including Pimelodus ornatus, "calophysines" and "pimelodines." The aim of this study was to investigate the karyotype of three Amazonian Pimelodidae species: Calophysus macropterus, Propimelodus eigenmanni, and Exallodontus aguanai associating them to the literature, seeking to reconstruct probable ancestral characters. C. macropterus has 2n = 50, 20m+20sm+10a (fundamental number [FN] = 90), simple interstitial nucleolar organizing regions (NORs), and four 5S rDNA sites terminals, two in synteny with the 18S rDNA. P. eigenmanni has 2n = 56, 28m+20sm+2st+6a (FN = 106), simple NORs, and two 5S rDNA sites terminals. E. aguanai has 2n = 56, 36m+12sm+2st+6a (FN = 106) and 18S and 5S rDNA sites interstitial syntenic in the chromosome 1. All species exhibited a higher amount of heterochromatin, differing from the pattern of the family, and strong marking associated with NORs. The integration between molecular phylogenetic data and karyotype data indicated a high probability that 2n = 56 and simple terminals NORs in the short arm are ancestral characters in Pimelodidae, evidenced in "sorubiminae." In the OCP clade derived traits were observed resulting from chromosomal changes that played a critical role in the karyotype evolution of the group. © Copyright 2019, Mary Ann Liebert, Inc., publishers 2019

    Catasetum sophiae, a new species of orchidaceae (catasetinae) from northern Brazil

    A new taxon, native to the shores of the Curiquidi pond, in the State of Amazonas, is described and illustrated. In the shape of the labellum, it is similar to Catasetum callosum and to C. transversicallosum. However, as far as the antennae are considered, C. sophiae is more similar to C. yavitaense. Placed in the section Isoceras with convergent antennae, C. sophiae can be distinguished to all the members of this group by its labellum mainly characterised by its saccate portion with margin entire or sparsely ciliated, and particularly by its glabrous frontal lobe furnished with a laterally compressed table-shaped callus projected forward. Besides, the frontal lobe is elongated in C. yavitaense and short and truncate in C. sophiae. © 2019 Magnolia Press

    Taxonomia de Apioscelis Brunner von Wattenwyl, 1890 e descrições de Andinoscopia gen. nov. e Milenascopia gen. nov. (Orthoptera: Acrididea: Proscopiidae)

    Apioscelis Brunner von Wanttenwyl is a genus of Proscopiidae endemic to South America. Despite being a genus taxonomically studied in the past there are still problems in need to be solved. For instance, the holotype of the type-species, Apioscelis bulbosa Brunner von Wanttenwyl, has its abdomen lost and has two different genitalia assigned to it by two different specialists. Furthermore, there are few records of Apioscelis to Brazil as well as no studies focused in this genus in this region. Thus, the present work taxonomically studied Apioscelis. As results, nine new species were described (Apioscelis amazonensis sp. nov., Apioscelis aurea sp. nov., Apioscelis grandiunca sp. nov., Apioscelis hyalina sp. nov., Apioscelis jagoi sp. nov., Apioscelis recta sp. nov., Apioscelis rufa sp. nov., Apioscelis tefeensis sp. nov., Apioscelis virgulata sp. nov.). The species A. bulbosa and A. laetitiaensis Bentos-Pereira & Listre were redescribed. One species was revalidated and transferred from Apioscelis to Stiphra(Stiphra gracilis Brunner von Wattenwyl sp. reval. et comb. nov.). Two new genera were described: Andinoscopia gen. nov. with the species Andinoscopia compacta comb. nov. (type species) and Andinoscopia davidcastanedai comb. nov., andMilenascopia gen. nov. with two new species included, Milenascopia bilineata sp. nov. (type species) and Milenascopia teuis sp. nov. Pictorial keys to identify all species were provided.Apioscelis Brunner von Wanttenwyl é um gênero de Proscopiidae endêmico da América do Sul. Apesar de já ter sido taxonomicamente estudado no passado, ainda restam problemas a serem resolvidos como a espécie-tipo Apioscelis bulbosa Brunner von Wanttenwyl que possui o holótipo com abdome perdido e duas genitálias diferentes descritas para a espécie por dois especialistas diferentes. Ainda, existem poucos registros de espécies desse gênero para o Brasil e um estudo focado nessa região ainda não foi feito. Assim, o presente trabalho estudou o gênero taxonomicamente. Como resultado, nove espécies novas de Apioscelis foram descritas (Apioscelis amazonensis sp. nov., Apioscelis aurea sp. nov.,Apioscelis grandiunca sp. nov., Apioscelis hyalina sp. nov., Apioscelis jagoi sp. nov., Apioscelis recta sp. nov., Apioscelis rufa sp. nov., Apioscelis tefeensis sp. nov., Apioscelis virgulata sp. nov.). As espécies A. bulbosa e A. laetitiaensis Bentos-Pereira & Listre, foram redescritas. Uma espécie foi revalidada e transferida de Apioscelis para Stiphra (Stiphra gracilis Brunner von Wattenwyl sp. reval. et comb. nov. Dois gêneros novos foram descritos: Andinoscopia gen. nov. com as espécies Andinoscopia compacta comb. nov. (espécie-tipo) e Andinoscopia davidcastanedai comb. nov. e Milenascopia gen. nov. com duas novas espécies Milenascopia bilineata sp. nov. (espécie-tipo) e Milenascopia tenuis sp. nov. Chaves pictóricas de identificação foram fornecidas para todas as espécies
