Cytogenetic characterization of two metynnis species (characiformes, serrasalmidae) reveals b chromosomes restricted to the females

    No full text
Karyotypes and chromosomal characteristics with focus on B chromosomes of 2 species of the serrasalmid genus Metynnis, namely M. lippincottianus and M. maculatus, were examined using conventional (C-banding) and molecular (FISH mapping of minor and major rDNAs and Rex1, Rex3, and Rex6 retrotransposable elements) protocols. Both species possessed a diploid chromosome number of 2n = 62 and karyotypes composed of 32 metacentric + 28 submetacentric + 2 subtelocentric and 32 metacentric + 26 submetacentric + 4 subtelocentric, respectively; one small B element was found in the female genome of M. lippincottianus. C-banding revealed heterochromatin in the pericentromeric and terminal portions of all chromosomes of both species; the B chromosome was entirely heterochromatic. FISH showed 18S rDNA sites in 2 chromosome pairs in both species (pairs 19 and 22), and a large block in the B chromosome, while 5S rDNA signals were detected in the first pair of subtelocentric chromosomes in both species, moreover in M. maculatus an additional labeled pair 4 was observed. Mapping of the Rex1, Rex3, and Rex6 retrotransposable elements in the genomes of M. lippincottianus and M. maculatus indicated that they were dispersed throughout nearly all the chromosomes of the complement, except for the B chromosome of M. lippincottianus. © 2019 S. Niche breadth is a fundamental ecological trait, underlying major macroecological patterns as well as species responses to environmental change. Yet, the drivers of variation in niche breadth across geographic extents are poorly understood. Moreover, the extent to which climate change has affected niche breadth is uncertain. Plant-pollinator systems provide an opportunity to address these questions, given the wide variation in the degree of ecological specialization between and within species. Stingless bees (Meliponini) dominate pollinator assemblages in the Neotropics, and thus play key roles in ecosystem functioning and ecosystem service provision. In Amazonia, pollen gathering by stingless bee colonies has been assessed since the late 1970s over a vast geographic area. Here, we synthesized such studies to investigate the effects of phenotypic (body size), environmental (tree diversity and composition, rainfall), and anthropogenic factors (urbanization, climate change) on the realized pollen niche of stingless bee colonies. We compiled pollen data for 89 colonies of 36 stingless bees species, distributed across 48 sites over 1400 km of the Amazon Basin. Generalized Least Squares models (GLS) incorporating phylogenetic autocorrelation were used to test for responses of pollen taxonomic diversity (a measure of niche breadth) and pollen taxonomic composition (a measure related to niche overlap). After accounting for methodological differences among studies, we found that geographic variation in realized pollen niche was mainly related to urbanization and body mass. On average, urban colonies collected five times more pollen types than wild ones, and of different composition. In parallel, pollen diversity tended to decrease with body size, while bees with different sizes collected different pollen compositions. Furthermore, we found that, since the 1970s, pollen diversity used by colonies has decreased, while pollen composition has changed, possibly due to phenological mismatch with and/or shifts in species composition of flower resources. Overall, our results suggest that the realized pollen niche of Amazonian stingless bees has been significantly restricted by direct (urbanization) and indirect human impacts (climate change) during the Anthropocene.

Honey samples from stingless bees (tribe Meliponini) were analyzed in three Sataré Mawé indigenous communities located along the edges of the Maruá River in the state of Amazonas, Brazil. Twenty-nine pollen types were identified for the Scaptotrigona nigrohirta colonies from the Ilha Michilis community, 43 for the Scaptotrigona sp. colonies and 39 for the Melipona seminigra colonies from the Nova Esperança community, and 34 for the M. seminigra colonies from the Monte Horeb community. Regarding the presence or absence of different pollen types in the samples, from the 65 pollen types identified, five were exclusive for the Scaptotrigona sp. from Nova Esperança, five for M. seminigra from Monte Horeb, six for S. nigrohirta from Ilha Michilis, and 13 for M. seminigra from Nova Esperança. Of the main pollen types identified (n = 22), the Miconia type had the highest proportion and was the only type shared by the bees from the three communities. The present study provides a list of important plants to be included in bee pastures for the studied bees in the Amazon, with the aim of developing stingless beekeeping as a subsistence activity in indigenous communities. © 2018, © 2018 AASP – The Palynological Society

In the Brazilian Amazon region occur three species of Carapa. All are popularly known as andiroba and are generally not differentiated when used. The trees are of multipurpose, exploited due to their wood and mainly the oil extracted from the seeds. The present study looked for distinctive characters of these species. This dissertation has two chapters. The first deals with leaf morphology from early development to juvenile plants in comparison with adult plants. In the second chapter, morphobiometric data on fruits and seeds were registered, digital seed images were analysed with Groundeye®, and compared physico-chemical characteristics of seed oil and the calorimetry of the seed reserves. Seeds of three species were collected in the Brazilian states of Amazonas and Pará. From each species data on 18 plants and 115 seeds were collected. Descriptive statistic was used for morphological data and when possible, an analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey test for comparison of means (5% probability). In Chapter 1, the development of seedlings was assessed until the 25th leaf node, the development of cataphylls or leaves, the length of the internodes and total plant height were registered. All three species had a cataphyll at the first leaf node. There was no pattern in the sequence of cataphylls and leaves with an expanded blade along the 25 nodes, neither within the species nor between the species. Until the 5th leaf node, the internodes were longer than afterwards, in all three species. It is possible to distinguish the species by the morphology of the first cataphylls. With further development cataphylls turn similar. Leaflets and the number of leaflets per leaf have distinct characteristics in seedlings and adults and are helpful to distinguish the species. In Chapter 2, the biometric data of fruits and seeds overlapped between C. guianensis and C. surinamensis. However, all biometric variables of C. vasquezii differed from the other two species. The length and width of the seed hilum were useful to differentiate the three species. It was also possible to distinguish the seeds by images of the textures captured with GroundEye®. Seed water content of freshly dispersed seeds was significant higher in C. vasquezii, and consequentely oil extraction based on fresh weight is reduced. Evaluating seed dry mass, the amount of calories was lower in C. vasquezii, which may indicate a different chemical composition. For further studies, we recommend a comparative and more detailed analysis of the seed oils of the three species. In a first evaluation, C. surinamensis seeds have the most favourable set of characteristics (oil content, iodine, saponification) for extraction and use of the oil. Keywords: leaf morphology, biometrics, GroundEye®, oil, calorimetry and water content.

Unexpected fish diversity gradients in the Amazon basin

    Get PDF
Using the most comprehensive fish occurrence database, we evaluated the importance of ecological and historical drivers in diversity patterns of subdrainage basins across the Amazon system. Linear models reveal the influence of climatic conditions, habitat size and sub-basin isolation on species diversity. Unexpectedly, the species richness model also highlighted a negative upriver-downriver gradient, contrary to predictions of increasing richness at more downriver locations along fluvial gradients. This reverse gradient may be linked to the history of the Amazon drainage network, which, after isolation as western and eastern basins throughout the Miocene, only began flowing eastward 1–9 million years (Ma) ago. Our results suggest that the main center of fish diversity was located westward, with fish dispersal progressing eastward after the basins were united and the Amazon River assumed its modern course toward the Atlantic. This dispersal process seems not yet achieved, suggesting a recent formation of the current Amazon system. Copyright © 2019 The Authors

Análise de Risco Edafoclimático para a Soja Cultivada na Região do Cone Sul de Rondônia: Diagnóstico Atual e em Cenários Futuros do Clima

The present study aimed to calibrate and validate the mechanistic model CSMCROPGRO-Soybean for the climatic conditions of the mesoregion of the Southern Cone of Rondônia (CSRO), located in the southern portion of the Amazon, more precisely in the transition zone between the Cerrado and Amazonian Forest biomes. For the execution of the parameterization process, six early cycle cultivars were chosen, with relative maturity (GMR) greater than 7.0 and distinct growth habits (indeterminate and determined), sown regularly by farmers in the western and southern regions, respectively, Mato Grosso and Rondônia. During two experimental harvests, 2017/2018 (calibration) and 2018/2019 (validation), climatic data of air temperature and relative humidity, wind direction and speed, precipitation, short-wave solar radiation and soil moisture were collected, as well as information on the physical and chemical characteristics of the local soil, as well as data on phenology, growth and biomass (leaves, vegetables, stems and grains) of the cultivars used in the study, necessary to make the simulations of the agricultural model more robust. The results obtained during the validation season consolidate the application of the model in the CSRO, mainly because concurrently with the process of adjusting the model parameters, an analysis of future climate projections for the course of the 21st century in that region was carried out. The research, based on simulations of 41 global climate models (MCG's), projects temperature increases ranging from 2° C to 3.2° C, as well as reductions of 1.5 mm day- 1, reaching 3 mm day-1, in the CSRO rainfall indexes. A worrying situation already in the short and medium terms, as from the preparation of the climatological water balance (BHC) for the CSRO, it appears that from the middle of the century onwards the water recharges expected for the rainy season will fall well below the current conditions. This new reality, if materialized, will prolong the dry season and intensify the deficits of moisture in the soil, due to the potential evapotranspiration (ETP) overcoming the precipitation (P), especially between 2081-2100, with the months of September and October becoming very dry, and extremely low replenishment in water stocks between December and March. Under this new perspective, agricultural practice in the CSRO may become impractical, especially for soybeans, whose sowing and development will occur in the months (September to January) that will most suffer these impacts (estimated losses of approximately 1200 mm) in the future scenario of the end from the century. Therefore, in view of the above, this study will allow CSRO farmers and decision makers to make use of another mechanism, properly adjusted and validated, for the management and guidance of agricultural practices in the local edaphoclimate. Added to this, the fact that the CROPGRO-Soybean model, after calibrated and validated, also has the ability to simulate and project the potential productivity of soybeans under limited water and high temperatures, as expected for CSRO in the coming decades.O presente estudo teve como objetivos calibrar e validar o modelo mecanicista CSMCROPGRO-Soybean para as condições climáticas da mesorregião do Cone Sul de Rondônia (CSRO), localizado na porção meridional da Amazônia, mais precisamente na zona de transição entre os biomas de Cerrado e Floresta Amazônica.

    Get PDF
In this study, we present and analyze the records of a 21-years monitoring program of vertebrate road-kills along 121 km of the BR-174 highway inside the Waimiri Atroari Indigenous Territorry (TIWA). The TIWA is a well-preserved area with high diversity of wild vertebrates located in Central Amazon. To assess the dynamics of road-kills, we identified the groups most killed and for each group, we investigated the influence of rainfall and vehicle traffic rates over the number of road-kills by using Generalized Linear Mixed Models (GLMM). To identify scales and areas of significant road-kill clusters (hotspots) over eight years, we used a modified K statistic and the HotSpot 2D statistic. From 1997 to 2017, 11 ,635 vertebrates were killed by car collisions. From these records, mammals and reptiles are the most representative classes followed by birds and amphibians. Vehicle traffic rate explained road-kill variation for all taxa, and rainfall was important to explain mortality only for mammals, but a negative relation. Hotspots were different among taxa and over years, but some remained or oscillated over time within each group, which we believe is related to the abundance of animals in the surroundings or to variation in resource availability. Therefore, vehicle traffic rates should be incorporated in road-kill studies, even in low traffic highways, and hotspots should be monitored from medium to long-term so that the choice and positioning of mitigation actions consider relevant factors and areas where kills aggregate along roads over time.
