A framework to profile corporate projects [Framework para perfilar proyectos corporativos]

    No full text
The accelerated advance of Information Technologies (IT) has led organizations facing new challenges in IT governance, as key elements for corporate strategy. A clear example is the decision-making regarding the acquisition, adoption, or implementation of technological platforms, where managers should consider whether they make large investments in software, training, and workforce. For this reason, it is important to be sure that the platform that is being used and the project types are being carried out, do correspond to the true vocation and profile of the organization. However, the proliferation of platforms and their heterogeneity increase the uncertainty in these decisions. This article presents a framework to identify the IT profile of a project or an organization, based on six defined categories: Software development, Platform integration, Business process management, Internet of things, Data analytics, and Open ecosystems of Artificial Intelligence. As an evaluation of the framework, an application case is presented in a company in the health area, within a technological project aimed at improving customer service throughout its area of influence (Colombia). We apply experimental instruments to identify the dominant profiles by units of the company and the roles representativeness involved. © 2020 AISTI

Human factors in all-terrain wheelchair design for rural population

    No full text
Considering the geography, the public infrastructure and the products available in Colombia, there was identified an insufficiency in the supply of wheelchairs appropriated for the tough conditions of rural areas. In response, an all-terrain, three-wheeled and leveraged wheelchair was designed, using the user-centered design approach. The wheelchair was adapted to the anthropometric and anatomical characteristics of its users and considered arms biomechanics for the design of leveraged driving system. In addition, it was proposed the use of magnesium alloys to reducing the weight of the wheelchair frame, which helps to reduce the effort thus contributing to the preservation of upper limbs. The wheelchair was co-designed involving potential users in the design process. The digital model suggests a weight reduction of 75% to 55% compared to commercial models and shows adequate structural behavior. Currently, a functional prototype is being manufactured, which will be subjected to technical and usability tests. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2020

Otherness in el arco y la lira by octavio paz [La otredad en el arco y la lira de octavio paz]

The aim of this article is to carry out a study on the theory of otherness in three essays from the book El arco y la lira by Octavio Paz: “La otra orilla”, “La inspiración” and “Los signos en rotación”. Given that the otherness is a philosophical problem that dates back to ancient times, a theoretical frame was included in order to expose a background, adopt a methodology and formulate a hypothesis regarding the characteristics of Paz’ theory. The hypothesis suggests that a certain affinity can be found with Hegel’s dialectics in that for Paz the search for otherness is a dialectical process between being and non-being, between the self and the non-self (the other), and later on this supposition was confirmed in the analysis. Furthermore, three different and complementary visions on otherness were found in the three essays: In “La otra orilla”, Paz argues that the poetic revelation is similar to the religious one insofar as it entails an act of “plunging into the other”; in “La inspiración”, he adopts a surrealist perspective, according to which the poetic experience implies a “fusion with the other”; and, finally, in “Los signos de rotación”, most similarities with Hegel were disclosed, especially when Paz suggests that the other should be associated with “being as change”, rejecting the traditional idea of “death”. © 2019, Universidad Complutense de Madrid. Preliminary study of the production of metabolites from in vitro cultures of C. ensiformis

    No full text
Background: Canavalia ensiformis is a legume native to Central and South America that has historically been a source of protein. Its main proteins, urease, and lectin have been extensively studied and are examples of bioactive compounds. In this work, the effect of pH and light effects on the growth of C. ensiformis were analyzed. Also, the bioactive compounds such as phenols, carotenoids, chlorophyll a/b, and the growth of callus biomass of C. ensiformis from the effect of different types of light treatments (red, blue and mixture) were evaluated. Likewise, the antioxidative activity of C. ensiformis extracts were studied and related to the production of bioactive compounds. For this, a culture of calluses obtained from seeds were carried out. For the light experiments, polypropylene boxes with red, blue, combination (1/3, 3/1 and 1/1 R-B, respectively) lights and white LED were used as control. In each treatment, three glass containers with 25 ml of MS salts containing 0.25 g of fresh callus were seeded. Results: The results have shown that the pH of the culture medium notably affects the increase in callogenic biomass. It shows that the pH of 5.5 shows better results in the callogenic growth of C. ensiformis with an average increase of 1.3051 g (198.04%), regarding the initial weight. It was found that the pH 5.5 and the 1/3 R-B LED combination had higher production of bioactive compounds and better antioxidant activity. At the same time, the red-light treatment was least effective. Conclusions: It was possible to find the ideal conditions of important growth under conditions of pH and light of C. ensiformis. Likewise, it is evaluated whether the production of compounds of interest, such as phenolic compounds and carotenoids, occurs under these conditions. The highest production of calluses occurs in the 1/3 R-B LED combined light treatment, which showed a significant increase in biomass, followed by B. From this study, it could be demonstrated that C. ensiformis produces compounds such as phenols and carotenoids in vitro culture that are essential for the antioxidant activity of the plant. © 2020 The Author(s)

Lattice strain influence on conduction band nonparabolicity in GaAs and InAs: Application to intraband optical absorption in InGaAs-GaAs asymmetric step quantum wells

    No full text
We use empirical spsd5 tight-binding calculations to determine the effects of compressive biaxial lattice strain, perpendicular to the [001] crystal direction, in zinc blende GaAs and InAs. Under that approach, we have been able to compute the behavior of quantities such as the average valence band energy, the energy band gap, the conduction band effective mass, and the spin-orbit split-off energy, as functions of the biaxial strain, within a range from 0 to −7%. Expressions governing these dependencies are reported for both materials. With such information at hand it is possible to calculate the variation of the coefficient of conduction band nonparabolicity due to the presence of strain. Also, the outcome for such quantities allows to evaluate the valence band offset in GaAs/InGaAs heterointerfaces as a consequence of the strain appearing from the difference between the lattice constants of the involved materials. Taking advantage of the above mentioned results, we have performed the calculation of confined conduction band states in step-like asymmetric quantum wells of the GaAs/Inx1Ga1-x1As/Inx2Ga1-x2As/GaAs prototype, using a k→⋅p→ formalism that solves the effective mass equation arising from a bi-cuadratic (nonparabolic) dispersion law. We report the calculation of the optical absorption coefficient related with intraband transitions that involve the ground and first excited energy levels. For that purpose, the study takes into account the variation of the layer widths and compositions. © 2020 Elsevier Lt

Local synchronization indices for rotors detection in atrial fibrillation: A simulation study

    No full text
Stable rotors have been proposed as mechanisms that maintain atrial fibrillation which is the most common arrhythmia worldwide. The information of intracardiac electrograms (EGMs), recorded through multielectrode arrays, is used to characterize the electrical conduction dynamics and thus to identify rotors or reentrant propagating waves. Most of the methods of EGMs processing are based on the assessment of the individual properties of each EGM signal. Additionally, synchronization indices have been proposed to evaluate the properties of the conduction patterns by means of multivariate analysis. However, the problem of rotor detection through EGMs remains open. We evaluate the behavior of four local synchronization indices using computational simulations of different conduction patterns and the corresponding EGMs in 2D models. The results show that phase synchronization exhibits better performance than correlation, coherence, and mutual information for detecting rotors under different fibrillatory patterns. We also show that this approach outperforms a previously reported technique based on entropy analysis of individual EGM. Synchronization maps using phase-locking values calculated from adjacent EGM highlight the vicinity of the core of stable rotors, even in the presence of multiple wavefronts and wave breaks. Therefore, phase-locking maps can be a useful tool for characterizing rotors during atrial fibrillation episodes. © 202

LO-Phonons and dielectric polarization effects on the electronic properties of doped GaN/InN spherical core/shell quantum dots in a nonparabolic band model

    No full text
The electron energy spectrum of a core/shell spherical quantum dot made of zincblende GaN/InN compounds is investigated taking into account the presence of an off-center donor atom and the influence of band nonparabolicity. The interaction of both the charge carrier and the Coulombic core with longitudinal optical phonons is included through Frö hlich and Aldrich-Bajaj theories, respectively. The ground state energy is determined by solving the resulting conduction band effective mass equation via the variational Ritz principle. A detailed analysis of the features of electron and hole spectra as functions of the core and shell sizes is presented, highlighting the possibility of transitioning between type-I and type-II structures. A detailed discussion about the effects of conduction band nonparabolicity, dielectric mismatch and electron-phonon interaction onto the impurity binding energy is provided. It was found that, in general, nonparabolicity of the conduction band leads to larger impurity binding energy, and that LO-phonon and dielectric mismatch effects tend to reduce the value of the latter quantity. © 2021, Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature
