Gender Disparities in Earnings Mobility: The Role of Employment Protection Legislation during Reproductive Years in Europe
https://openpolicyfinder.jisc.ac.uk/id/publication/4942This article assesses potential differences in the implementation of employment protection for permanent and temporary contracts on upward and downward in-work earnings mobility between women and men aged 25–40 years in European countries for 2008–2014. Results reveal that, although employment protection is formulated based on a gender-neutral conception, the application of such measures might be associated differently with earnings mobility by gender. While higher levels of protection for regular contracts seem to be linked to lower earnings gains for women and men, more stringent employment regulations are related to losses for women. Likewise, stricter protection of temporary employment appears to favour greater gains for men, while it only prevents women from suffering more pronounced losses. High-order WENO finite-difference methods for hyperbolic nonconservative systems of partial differential equations
This work aims to extend the well-known high-order WENO finite-difference methods for systems of conservation laws to nonconservative hyperbolic systems. The main difficulty of these systems both from the theoretical and the numerical points of view comes from the fact that the definition of weak solution is not unique: according to the theory developed by Dal Maso, LeFloch, and Murat in 1995, it depends on the choice of a family of paths. A new strategy is introduced here that allows non-conservative products to be written as the derivative of a generalized flux function that is defined locally on the basis of the selected family of paths. WENO reconstructions are then
applied to this generalized flux. Moreover, if a Roe linearization is available, the generalized flux function can be evaluated through matrix-vector operations instead of path-integrals. Two different known techniques are used to extend the methods to problems with source terms and the well-balanced properties of the resulting schemes are studied. These numerical schemes are applied to a coupled Burgers’ system and to the two-layer shallow water equations in one- and two- dimensions to obtain high-order methods that preserve water-at-rest steady states.Funding for open acces charge: Universidad de Málaga / CBU

An integrated approach to the valorization of pyrolysis products from lignocellulosic residues and by-products
Pyrolysis of biomass waste enables the generation of energy and products, although the sustainability of this process requires an integral valorization of all produced fractions. This paper presents a study on the valorization of all pyrolysis products from selected biomass wastes, such as hemp hurd (HH), olive stone (OS) and almond shell (AS), and two technical lignins, focusing on the effect of the biopolymeric composition on the potential applications of the different pyrolysis streams. The stablished correlation between the lignocellulosic biomass composition and the properties of each of the pyrolysis products obtained (bio-oil, biochar and gases) in relation to their potential applications (in addition to the distribution of pyrolysis products and yields) represents the main novelties of this work. The results obtained demonstrate that it is possible to obtain energy to sustain an autothermal pyrolysis process from these residues at operation temperatures above 500 °C. Residual biomass materials with high lignin content deliver gases with higher heating values (up to 23 MJ/m3), higher yields of solids (ca. 58 %), and bio-oil with lower acid and higher phenolic content (up to 19.9%m/m.). Agricultural residues, especially hemp hurd, which contains lower lignin amount, produce chars with narrow microporosity, matching the requirements to selectively adsorb CO2 from biogas and steam reforming streams, achieving CO2/CH4 selectivity values as high as 53.Funding for open access charge: Universidad de Málaga / CBU
Biodiversidad y ecosistemas: una revisión sistemática en Didáctica de las Ciencias Experimentales (2012-2024)
Proyecto 21ProyExcel_00176El conocimiento y comprensión de la biodiversidad y de los ecosistemas constituyen en el contexto actual una necesidad educativa. Este trabajo muestra una revisión sistemática de los artículos publicados en cinco revistas españolas de Didáctica de las Ciencias Experimentales entre 2012 y 2024, siguiendo los criterios de la declaración PRISMA. Los objetivos principales son identificar y describir los artículos publicados en dicho periodo sobre biodiversidad y/o ecosistemas abordando autoría, niveles educativos, temáticas,metodologías empleadas y aportaciones a la literatura. La revisión revela que los estudios realizados en estos temas son muy escasos, constituyendo el 5,54% de los trabajos publicados en el área. La mayoría de los autores se adscriben a departamentos de Didáctica de las Ciencias Experimentales y los trabajos se suelen centrar en secundaria y bachillerato. Aproximadamente la mitad de los estudios abordan temas relacionados con biodiversidad, mientras que los dedicados a ecosistemas constituyen la tercera parte. Las metodologías empleadas no muestran una tendencia clara, existiendo una gran representación de ellas. Las aportaciones a la literatura revelan ciertas estrategias que contribuyen significativamente a mejorar el proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje de la biodiversidad y los ecosistemas, tales como el uso de metodologías centradas en proyectos y trabajos cooperativos, el uso de contextos reales, y la incorporación de prácticas científicas. Novel method for the production of Zr-doped Beta-zeolites and their use in the production of 5-(hydroxymethyl)furfural etherified biofuels
A Beta zeolite with a high Al:Si molar ratio was dealuminated and the resulting silanol nests were functionalized with Zr to generate Lewis acid sites, for the catalytic transfer hydrogenation of the carbonyl group of 5-(hydroxymethyl)furfural (HMF), whose subsequent etherification with isopropanol led to the formation of 2,5-bis(isopropoxymethyl)furan, a potential biofuel. In this work, it was demonstrated that the parent zeolite was incapable of performing the reduction of HMF, instead directing the reaction towards the production of 5-(isopropoxymethyl)furfural (IMF) (90 % yield after 1 h at 180 ºC, with 150 mg of HMF). However, Zr-doped zeolites allowed the conversion of 5-(hydroxymethyl)furfural into its mono- and bis-etherified derivatives, and a 62 % yield of 2,5-bis(isopropoxymethyl)furan was achieved with the zeolite with a Si:Zr molar ratio of 30, after 5 h at 180 ºC. Estudio dinámico de una cadena de rodillos mediante simulación dinámica multicuerpo en Simscape Multibody
Las cadenas de rodillos son componentes críticos en la transmisión de potencia en aplicaciones industriales y de vehículos, donde la precisión y el rendimiento del sistema dependen en gran medida de su comportamiento dinámico. A diferencia de las correas, las cadenas presentan características específicas que requieren un modelado detallado para capturar efectos dinámicos como la imposibilidad de extensión de la cadena y la influencia de la "acción poligonal" en la salida de velocidad angular. Este estudio presenta una simulación multicuerpo de más de cien cuerpos en Simscape Multibody para evaluar estos efectos en una cadena de rodillos
Mechanosensitive PIEZO2 channels shape coronary artery 28 development
Coronary arteries develop under constant mechanical stress. However, the role of mechanosensitive ion channels in this process remains poorly understood. Here we show that the ion channel PIEZO2, which responds to mechanical stimuli, is expressed in specific coronary endothelial cell populations during a critical phase of coronary vasculature remodeling. These Piezo2+ coronary endothelial cells show distinct transcriptional profiles and have mechanically activated ionic currents. Strikingly, PIEZO2 loss-of-function mouse embryos and mice with human pathogenic variants of PIEZO2 show abnormal coronary vessel development and cardiac left ventricular hyperplasia. We conclude that an optimal balance of PIEZO2 channel function contributes to proper coronary vessel formation, structural integrity and remodeling, and is likely to support normal cardiac function. Our study highlights the importance of mechanical cues in cardiovascular development and suggests that defects in this mechanosensing pathway may contribute to congenital heart conditions

social responsibility (CSR) practices in SMEs. Analysing a sample of 1,136 firms (729 FBs and 407 NFBs) and
using a PLS-PM methodology, our results support that HCI has a favourable impact on CSR practices in SMEs
and that family business (FB) status plays a moderating role on these relationships
