    En septiembre de 2021 se produjo en Sierra Bermeja (Málaga) uno de los mayores incendios forestales acaecidos en Andalucía en los últimos años. Más allá del daño biológico en una zona de gran importancia ecológica, en regiones mediterráneas existe también una correlación muy directa entre incendios e inundaciones. Este trabajo analiza la afección potencial que ha tenido el incendio sobre la inundabi-lidad en los municipios del entorno. Para ello, desarrolla dos líneas metodológicas, consistentes en evaluar la escorrentía previa y posterior al incendio, y modelizar diacrónicamente las láminas de inundación en las principales cuencas hidrográficas afectadas. Para orientar los estudios hidrológico-hidráulicos y para testar los resultados se ha tomado como referencia un evento tormentoso posterior al incendio, que ocasionó importantes inundaciones. Los resultados coinciden con los registros de dicho evento, por lo que la metodología podría ser de utilidad para orientar las acciones de gestión y ordenación territorial que las administraciones pueden y deben llevar a cabo tras grandes incendios en regiones mediterráneas

    Physical activity during adolescence promotes health and well-being by reducing stress, improving neurocognitive and emotional well-being, and fostering social skills. Adolescents often fail to meet recommended activity levels, and Physical Education (PE) classes provide a unique opportunity to promote active lifestyles. The transformational leadership of PE teachers, characterized by idealized influence, motivational inspiration, intellectual stimulation, and individualized consideration, can positively impact students' self-esteem, motor self-efficacy, enjoyment, and intention to remain active. Research highlights that transformational leadership fosters positive experiences in PE, increasing intrinsic motivation, effort, and satisfaction. Teachers who inspire and support students create environments where enjoyment and self-confidence are prioritized, encouraging lifelong physical activity habits. Self-esteem, defined as self-worth based on experiences and emotions, improves through positive leadership, enhancing commitment to motor tasks and enjoyment. Similarly, motor self-efficacy, the confidence in one's physical abilities, predicts adherence to active behaviors. The studies included in this doctoral thesis reveal significant relationships between transformational leadership, self-esteem, motor self-efficacy, enjoyment, and the intention to remain active among adolescents. Motivational inspiration and intellectual stimulation were key predictors of these variables, with enjoyment emerging as the strongest mediator. Structural equation modeling confirmed that motor self-efficacy and enjoyment significantly mediate the relationship between transformational leadership and active intentions. The findings emphasize the importance of planning and promoting transformational leadership in PE to create supportive and enjoyable environments that enhance students' well-being and motivation

    A putative novel type of tight adherence (tad) like gene cluster of Pseudomonas Chlororaphis PCL1606 exhibits a crucial role in avocado roots colonization, fostering its biological control activity

    Aims Pseudomonas chlororaphis PCL1606 (PcPCL1606), displays strong antagonistic and biological control abilities against several soil-borne fungal pathogens mainly due to the production of the antifungal molecule 2-hexyl, 5-propyl resorcinol (HPR). HPR governs other beneficial phenotypes, suggesting its additional regulatory activity. Published transcriptomic data identifying HPR-regulated genes involved in the interaction of PcPCL1606 with the avocado rhizosphere were used as a target database to identify putative genes involved in avocado roots colonization. Methods The induction of several consecutive genes that showed homology with genes encoding a putative type IV Flp/Tad (tight adherence) pilus but with a few differences from the Tad type A and B was observed. To study the role of this tad-like gene cluster in the biology of PcPCL1606, a chromosomal deletion mutant was constructed. The molecular characterization of the tad-like gene cluster and different in vitro and in vivo phenotypes related to colonization were addressed in the mutant strain respect to PcPCL1606. Results The tad-like gene cluster was composed of five independent transcriptional units. Furthermore, the tad-like deletion mutant was impaired in early attachment, early biofilm formation, bacterial autoggregation and in root competitiveness in avocado plants and biocontrol activity against R. necatrix. Conclusions These results expand our understanding about the role of HPR as a putative signalling molecule. This study revealed the importance of a putative novel type of a Tad system of PcPCL1606 in the avocado roots colonization, confirming that initial attachment to roots is a fundamental mechanism for the PcPCL1606 rhizospheric performance.Funding for open access publishing: Universidad de Málaga/CBUA .     Named entity recognition for de-identifying Spanish electronic health records

    Background and objectives: There is an increasing and renewed interest in Electronic Health Records (EHRs) as a substantial information source for clinical decision making. Consequently, automatic de-identification of EHRs is an indispensable task, since their dissociation from personal data is a necessary prerequisite for their dissemination. Nevertheless, the bulk of prior research in this domain has been conducted using English EHRs, given the limited availability of annotated corpora in other languages, including Spanish. Methods: In this study, the automatic de-identification of medical documents in Spanish was explored. A private corpus comprising 599 genuine clinical cases was annotated with eight different categories of protected health information. The prediction problem was approached as a named entity recognition task and two deep learning-based methodologies were developed. The first strategy was based on recurrent neural networks (RNN) and the second, an end-to-end approach, was based on Transformers. In addition, we have implemented a procedure to expand the amount of texts employed for model training. Results: Our findings demonstrate that Transformers surpass RNNs in the de-identification of clinical data in Spanish. Particularly noteworthy is the excellent performance of the XLM-RoBERTa large Transformer, achieving a rigorous strict-match micro-average of 0.946 for precision, 0.954 for recall, and an F1 score of 0.95 when applied to the amplified version of the corpus. Furthermore, a web-based application has been created to assist specialized clinicians in de-identifying EHRs through the aid of the implemented models. Conclusion: The study’s conclusions showcase the practical applicability of the state-of-the-art Transformers models for precise de-identification of clinical notes in real-world medical settings in Spanish, with the potential to improve performance if continual pre-training strategies are implemented.Funding for open access charge: Universidad de Málaga / CBUA.     Glutaminase-2 Expression Induces Metabolic Changes and Regulates Pyruvate Dehydrogenase Activity in Glioblastoma Cells

    Glutaminase controls the first step in glutaminolysis, impacting bioenergetics, biosynthesis and oxidative stress. Two isoenzymes exist in humans, GLS and GLS2. GLS is considered prooncogenic and overexpressed in many tumours, while GLS2 may act as prooncogenic or as a tumour suppressor. Glioblastoma cells usually lack GLS2 while they express high GLS. We investigated how GLS2 expression modifies the metabolism of glioblastoma cells, looking for changes that may explain GLS2’s potential tumour suppressive role. We developed LN-229 glioblastoma cells stably expressing GLS2 and performed isotope tracing using U-13C-glutamine and metabolomic quantification to analyze metabolic changes. Treatment with GLS inhibitor CB-839 was also included to concomitantly inhibit endogenous GLS. GLS2 overexpression resulted in extensive metabolic changes, altering the TCA cycle by upregulating part of the cycle but blocking the synthesis of the 6-carbon intermediates from acetyl-CoA. Expression of GLS2 caused downregulation of PDH activity through phosphorylation of S293 of PDHA1. GLS2 also altered nucleotide levels and induced the accumulation of methylated metabolites and S-adenosyl methionine. These changes suggest that GLS2 may be a key regulator linking glutamine and glucose metabolism, also impacting nucleotides and epigenetics. Future research should ascertain the mechanisms involved and the generalizability of these findings in cancer or physiological conditions

    La Biblioteca Universitaria en un Proyecto de Innovación Educativa sobre competencias transversales. Un estudio de caso.

    Comunicación presentada en las XXII Jornadas Bibliotecarias de Andalucía, celebradas en Jerez de la Frontera (8 y 9 de noviembre de 2024).Se describen y analizan las actividades formativas que se diseñaron para trabajar la competencia de aprendizaje autónomo, manejo de documentación e información en el marco de un Proyecto de Innovación Educativa para el desarrollo integrado de competencias transversales en el Grado de Sistemas Electrónicos de la Universidad de Málaga. Como resultado el personal bibliotecario impartió, en colaboración con el profesorado, tres seminarios diferentes, en siete asignaturas y tres niveles competenciales, con actividades complementarias y prácticas, en los que participaron un total de 192 estudiantes. Se concluye que la participación en proyectos de este tipo tiene un alcance estratégico para la biblioteca y suponen un avance en el desarrollo de competencias transversales del alumnado. Esta experiencia ha facilitado el trabajo colaborativo e innovador de docentes y personal bibliotecario y generado un conjunto de materiales y documentos que pueden servir de apoyo y punto de partida para nuevos proyectos

    Vassilis Alexakis, the migrant greek child. About the reality of in-between fictional characters and literary spaces

    Vassilis Alexakis (Athens, 1943-2021) started writing in French while living in France, he then changed to Greek language, which was followed by what resulted in a systematic practice of self-translation in both directions for most of his works. He is a very well-known author both in France and in Greece and one of the most well-known cases of contemporary literary self-translators, as well as an exponent of literary hybridity. In 2012 he was awarded the Prix de la Langue Française for the whole of his career. That same year, after an important operation on one leg, Vassilis Alexakis spent a month and a half on crutches at a hotel near the Parisian Luxembourg Garden. Just like the main character of his fourteenth and second to last novel, L’enfant grec, that he wrote then. In all his books, Alexakis seems to have the need to talk about himself but also about space. He constantly offers countless spatial references. Is it because of being out of his comfort zone then, or is it because of his (for many years already) life divided in between his two beloved countries, that Alexakis needs to constantly speak about places? Is there a link between all the geographical references and the existential need of knowing where he is? We shall explore the relationship between Vassilis Alexakis and space in this particular novel, linked to the reinvention of literary space in Alexakis’ work
