    Effects of guar gum supplementation in high-fat diets on fish growth, gut histology, intestinal oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis in juvenile largemouth bass (<em>Micropterus salmoides</em>)

    The present study aimed to investigate the influence of guar gum supplementation in high-fat diets on the growth performance and intestinal oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis of juvenile largemouth bass. Five isonitrogenous diets were prepared: a control diet (10% crude lipid, C), a high-fat diet (17% crude lipid, HF), and three high-fat diets supplemented with 0.3% guar gum (GG0.3), 1% guar gum (GG1), and 3% guar gum (GG3). Largemouth bass (3.1±0.2 g) were randomly assigned to fifteen tanks (30 fish/tank) and fed for 8 weeks. The results demonstrated that GG0.3 significantly increased specific growth rate (SGR) and increased feed conversion ratio (FCR) compared to HF (P < 0.05). For histology, high-fat diets containing guar gum significantly increased intestinal villus length, villus width, and perimeter ratio, compared with HF (P < 0.05). Compared with Control, HF significantly decreased reduced glutathione (GSH) contents and increased malondialdehyde (MDA) contents in the intestine (P < 0.05). Additionally, HF significantly increased the expression of interleukin 1β (IL-1β), tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α), and cysteine-aspartic proteases 9 (Caspase 9) in the intestine (P < 0.05). Compared to HF, GG0.3 significantly decreased MDA contents, increased GSH contents, and downregulated the expression of IL-1β, TNF-α, and Caspase 3 than diet HF in the intestine (P < 0.05). These results suggest that guar gum can alleviate the adverse effects of high-fat diets on growth and gut health in fish

    Detecting Female and Male Language Features in Facebook Comments by Malaysian Millennial Users

    This study examines gendered language use in Facebook comments by Malaysian millennial users. Textual analysis was conducted on 260 Facebook comments collected from 11 Facebook social pages. Sixty participants’ reasons for identifying the gender of the writers of 14 Facebook comments were also analyzed. The results showed that half of the participants could correctly guess the writers’ gender. The Facebook comments showed more frequent use of male than female language features. The male millennial users were inclined towards using Sexual References, Insults/Profanities, Directive/Autonomy, Strong Assertion, and Rhetorical Questions. The females, however, were inclined towards using Hedges, Polite and Emotionally Expressive Words, Interpersonally Orientation/Supportiveness, Questions, and Experience Sharing. From the participants’ perspective, male writing is short, direct, rude, negative, and crude, while female writing is lengthy, tentative, polite, positive, emotional, and reflects concern for others. The non-gender specific language features identified from textual analysis are Information Orientation, Apologies, Tag Questions, and Aligned Orientation, but different features were given by the participants (Questions, Rhetorical Questions, and Strong Assertion). The study also shows that Information Orientation, Self-Promotion, Sexual Reference, Opposed Orientation, Hedges, Apologies and Tag Questions may be falling into disuse among Malaysian millennials in Facebook comments. The findings suggest that language patterns used by Malaysian millennials deviate from conventional norms, with some comments displaying cross-gender language patterns. This indicates a blurring of conventional gender language norms in online interactions

    Early embryonic development of green crucian carp <em>Carassius auratus</em> indigentiaus subsp. nov.

    The early embryonic development of the green crucian carp (Carassius auratus indigentiaus subsp. nov.) was observed to study its timing and characteristics. The fertilized eggs are round, slightly yellow, and viscous demersal. The egg diameter after water swelling was 1.47 ± 0.04 mm. Embryonic development can be divided into eight stages according to its major characteristics: blastoderm formation, mitotic, blastula, gastrula, neurula, blastopore closure, organogenetic and hatching stages. Under a water temperature of 24 ± 1 °C, salinity of 35 ± 1, and pH of 7.4 ± 0.5, the blastoderm began to form 35 min after fertilization. It entered the mitotic stage at 55 min, blastula stage at 220 min, gastrula stage at 460 min, neurula stage at 675 min, blastopore closure stage at 700 min, organogenetic stage at 900 min and hatching stage at 3390 min. The total length of newly hatched larvae was 4.07 ± 0.35 mm. Regression models of growth characteristics were obtained. The full-length growth rate was fastest from 15 to 26 days, with an average of 0.396 mm/day. Compared with other cyprinid fishes, green crucian carp exhibited some distinct characteristics in certain stages of embryonic development. The eye primordium developed before the sarcomere, and the heart rate was relatively high before the member stage. Yolk fluctuation was observed during the multi-cell phase of embryonic development. The sarcomere formed after the eye primordium. The heart rate in the hatching phase was 136 beats/min. This study provides a reference for embryonic development in green crucian carp, which will assist its large-scale cultivation

    Haemolytic <em>Bacillus subtilis</em>, a potential pathogen of hemorrhage disease in farmed yellow catfish <em>Pelteobagrus fulvidraco</em>

    The hemorrhagic disease has become a major bottleneck in yellow catfish Pelteobagrus fulvidraco aquaculture. Yet scarce information is available on Bacillus subtilis as a pathogen of hemorrhagic disease in cultured yellow catfish. In this study, a virulent isolate, temporarily named HS5, was isolated from hemorrhagic disease-infected cultured yellow catfish, and was identified phenotypically and molecularly as B. subtilis. In addition, isolate HS5 showed an LD50 value of 5.20×106 CFU/ml in yellow catfish, exhibited beta-haemolytic activity, harbored the virulent entFM gene, and displayed high susceptibility to enrofloxacin and florfenicol in aquaculture use. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of B. subtilis as a pathogen of hemorrhagic disease in farmed yellow catfish

    Since 2003, Terevaka Archaeological Outreach (TAO) has offered unforgettable educational opportunities regarding archaeology, traditional lifeways, technology, and sustainable development at no cost for Rapa Nui high school students. After 20 years of refining our pedagogy and implementation, 2022–2023 marked a year of rapid expansion for TAO. Within a 10-month period, TAO completed two projects on Rapa Nui, and also launched sister programs in the Sacred Valley of Peru and in Patagonia National Park of Chile
