A Study of Intonation Patterns in Khasi: Labeling and Analysis
This paper aims to analyze the intonation patterns found in Khasi, an Austroasiatic language spoken in north-eastern India. The study focuses on the use of pitch and how it correlates with meaning. The main objective of this paper is to use a Rhythm and Pitch labeling (RaP) system to annotate the data collected from native speakers of Khasi, identify pitch contours, and assign labels based on the overall shape of the pitch curve. The annotated data will be analyzed to identify specific patterns and trends in the intonation of Khasi. The research examines the intonation patterns that highlight stressed syllables and that delineate the boundaries of syntactic units. Despite the potential significance of this topic, there has been limited research conducted in this area. This research contributes to our understanding of the intonation patterns of Khasi and will be useful for linguists, phoneticians, and language teachers
Effects of water temperature on swimming performance of <em>Siniperca knerii</em> Garman under the Yuanshui River cascade development
We examined the swimming parameters and oxygen consumption rate at four temperature levels (15,20,25 and 30°C) of Siniperca knerii Garman (11.81 ±2.21 cm, 26.4 ± 6.28g) from Yuanshui River for 30 days to analyze the ecological adaptability of the typical fish and the conservation of fishery resources from the Dongting Lake water system. Their relationship was also analyzed, and the results showed an approximately linear increasing trend of the fish's critical swimming speed and preferred swimming speed with the change of temperature (PSiniperca knerii Garman. The changes were due to physiological and biochemical regulation with temperature and environmental changes. This experiment provided essential data support for the adaptive mechanism of sports physiology and ecology of typical fishes in the Yuanshui River
Effects of morphological traits on living body weight of wild Cyclina sinensis in different geographical populations
Eleven coastal geographical populations of wild Cyclina sinensis in China were collected in February 2020, and the effects of four morphological traits (shell length; shell height; shell width; external ligament length) on one weight trait (living body weight) were studied by correlation analysis, path analysis, determination coefficient analysis, and regression analyses. The statistical results showed that the coefficient of body weight variation was generally greater than morphological traits(P<0.05). The correlation analysis results showed that the coefficient of correlation between morphological traits (except for external ligament length) and body weight are significantly positive (P<0.05) in all populations. Based on the results of path analysis and determination coefficient analysis, shell length has the greatest direct effect on body weight in the Yancheng population; shell height has the greatest direct effect on body weight in Dandong, Fuzhou and Tangshan populations; shell width has the greatest direct effect on body weight in Zhanjiang, Wenzhou, Dongtai, Ningbo, Tianjin, Dongying, and Wanning populations. Multiple regression equations were obtained with body weight as the dependent variable, shell length, height, and width and external ligament length as independent variables. The results of systematic clustering showed that there are no apparent geographical differentiation characteristics among eleven geographical populations in morphology. This study provided a scientific basis for selective and genetic breeding and can guide the development and utilization of wild C. sinensis seed resources
Analysis of morphological differences among different populations of golden pompano (<em>Trachinotus ovatus</em>)
To explore the external morphological differences of golden pompano in different geographical populations, eight quantitative traits of 210 samples from seven golden pompano populations were measured. Multivariate statistical methods, such as principal component analysis, discriminant analysis, cluster analysis, and One-way ANOVA, were used to compare morphological differences among the populations. Principal component analysis extracted the top five principal components with a cumulative contribution rate of 85.79%, of which the first three principal components could explain seven morphological features. The principal component scatter plot showed that the NH, CH, and LL populations had similar morphology. Using the stepwise discriminant method to establish the classification and discrimination functions of the seven populations, the discrimination accuracy of the DL population was 93.3% for P1 and 87.5% for P2, which was the highest, and the comprehensive discrimination rate was 71.4%. The clustering relationship diagram showed that the populations were divided into three branches, and the CH and NH populations were closest. In contrast, the DL and HF populations were farthest from the other populations. One-way ANOVA showed significant differences (P<0.05) among all traits of the populations, and the morphological differences between the HX and DL populations were the largest. The results of this study showed specific differences in the external morphology of golden pompano among different populations
Effects of dietary guava leaf aqueous extract supplementation on growth, antioxidant capacity, and non-specific immunity in mud crab <em>Scylla paramamosain</em>
Mud crab (*Scylla paramamosain*) fed five different diets with varying concentrations of guava leaf aqueous extract (0 mg·kg^--1^, 80 mg·kg^--1^, 160 mg·kg^--1^, 320 mg·kg^--1^, and 640 mg·kg^--1^) for 30 days. Mud crabs in the 320 mg·kg^--1^ guava-leaf extract groups outperformed the control group in terms of survival rates (SR), weight gain rates (WGR), and specific growth rates (SGR). When compared to the control group, mud crabs in the 320 mg·kg^--1^ guava-leaf extract groups had significantly higher levels of lipase (LPS), pepsin, lysozyme (LZM), superoxide dismutase (SOD), acid phosphatase (ACP), and glutathione (GSH) (*P \< 0.05*). The amylase (AMS) activity was significantly decreased in all experimental groups (*P \< 0.05*). Malondialdehyde (MDA) content in the hepatopancreas of mud crabs in the 160 mg·kg^--1^, 320 mg·kg^--1^, and 640 mg·kg^--1^ guava-leaf extract groups were significantly reduced compared to the control group (*P \< 0.05*). Additionally, real-time PCR results illustrated that the expression levels of *GPx3*, *CAT*, and *JNK* were all considerably increased in the 80 mg·kg^--1^ guava-leaf extract groups compared to the control group (*P \< 0.05*). In the 160 mg·kg^--1^, 320 mg·kg^--1^, and 320 mg·kg^--1^ guava-leaf extract groups, the expression levels of *SOD* genes were considerably greater than the control (*P \< 0.05*), which was consistent with the level of SOD activity. *GST* and *P53* gene expression levels were significantly up-regulated in the 80 mg·kg^--1^, 160 mg·kg^--1^, 320 mg·kg^--1^, and 640 mg·kg^--1^ guava-leaf extract groups compared to the control group (*P \< 0.05*). Overall, the addition of 160 mg·kg^--1^-320 mg·kg^--1^ guava-leaf extract to the feed of *Scylla paramamosain* promoted growth, enhanced the activities of digestive and antioxidant enzymes, and strengthened immunity
Transcriptome Analysis of the Cultured Hybrid Grouper (♀*Epinephelus fuscoguttatus*×♂*E. lanceolatus*) Immunized with <em>Vibrio harveyi</em> formalin-killed cells vaccine (FKC) combined with chitosan oligosaccharide
Grouper has become an essential mariculture species in China, while vibriosis caused by Vibrio harveyi significantly impacts its culture. Our previous study confirmed the *V. harveyi* formalin-killed cells vaccine (FKC) combined with chitosan oligosaccharide (FKC+COS) effectively prevents vibriosis. As an adjuvant, COS could significantly enhance FKC effectiveness against *V. harveyi* in grouper. In the present study, we performed transcriptome analysis of grouper spleens tissue 14 days post-immunization of PBS and FKC+COS, respectively. After assembly and annotation, 2,503 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were obtained, including the upregulated 1,894 DEGs and downregulated 609 DEGs between the PBS group and FKC+COS group. To explore the relevance of DEGs in immunity, enrichment analysis in the KEGG database revealed that the main pathways of DEGs distribution associated with immunity were antigen processing and presentation, lysosome, the intestinal immune network for IgA production and FcγR-mediated phagocytosis. In conclusion, transcriptome analysis of spleens was performed to explore the potential mechanism of COS as an adjuvant enhancing the protection effectiveness of FKC against vibriosis in grouper
Using black soldier fly larvae as feed for Thai frog (<em>Rana rugosa</em> Temminck and Schlegel, 1838) – Preliminary study of the effect on production parameters
This study aimed to evaluate the effect of the inclusion of either fresh or dried black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) in diets on the production parameters and chemical composition of Thai frogs (Rana rugosa) cultured in net cages. Frog fingerlings have an initial weight of 20.4 g and were distributed randomly into fifteen net cages (2 x 3 x 1.5 m) at a density of 240 frog.net cage-1. Including five dietary treatments named: T1 (100% commercial feed used as a control), T2 (100% dried BSFL), T3 (50% dried BSFL + 50% commercial feed), T4 (50% fresh BSFL + 50% commercial feed), and T5 (100% fresh BSFL) with three replicates for each treatment. The results showed that the survival rate of frogs ranged from 64.3% to 87.0%, improved feed conversion ratio (1.43 to 1.90%), increased live weight (194.7 – 244.6 g), daily weight gain (2.9 – 3.7 g.day-1), and frog’s yield (6.30 – 7.96 kg.m-2). The contents of crude protein (18.21 – 23.19%), ether extract (0.28 – 0.53%), and total ash (0.99 – 1.05%) of frog meat in this study were affected by the inclusion of either fresh or dried BSFL in the diets of frogs. In recommendation, the diet comprised from 50% fresh BSFL + 50% commercial feed could be applied successfully in Thai frog cage production

Effects of cadmium exposure on tissue structure, antioxidant enzyme activity, serum biochemical indices and gene expression in the liver of juvenile largemouth bass (<em>Micropterus salmoides</em>)
This study aimed to understand the effect of various levels of waterborne cadmium exposure and associated integrated response in largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides). The experimental fish were randomly divided into 4 groups: Group H (high concentration group): 0.25 mg/L of water (100% of the LC~50~); Group M (medium concentration group): 0.01 mg/L of water (50% of the LC~50~); group L (low concentration group): 0.05 mg/L of water (12.5% of the LC~50~) and group C (control). Experimental fish in group C (control group) were cultured in cadmium (Cd)-free tap water. After 28 days of Cd exposure, the gill and liver tissues were collected for histological analysis and antioxidant enzyme activities assay. Serum biochemical indices and the expression levels of HSP70, HSP90, Cyp1a, and MT in the liver were assayed. Results indicated Cd exposure in group H could significantly damage the gill and liver. The SOD activity of gill and liver exhibited an increasing trend with Cd concentrations increasing, and SOD activities increased significantly in group M compared to that of group C. Still, SOD activity significantly decreased in group H. MDA content increased significantly in both the gill and liver, while T-AOC activities were not significantly different in both the gill and liver. By comparison with group C, the activities of ALT and AST in serum were significantly increased in group M and group H; the contents of ALB and TP significantly decreased in group M and group H except for the content slightly increased in the group L; the contents of GLU, TG, and TC did not show significant changes in the group L and the group M, but increased significantly in the group H. The expression levels of HSP70 and HSP90 in the liver exhibited the highest level in group M, whereas the expression levels of MT and Cyp1a were highest in groups H and L, respectively. Our results are intended to provide a reference basis for the safety risk evaluation of Cd and healthy fish farming
Archaeological Approaches for Understanding the Marquesan Stone Pounder ke’a tuki popoi
Stone pounders known as ke’a tuki popoi, ke’a tu’i kioe, or k’ea tuki kóna, were and are still used on certain Polynesian Islands to mash food, usually fruit, especially breadfruit, to make a paste known as poi, and some were used to produce medicine and pigments. They were the second most frequently collected stone objects in Polynesia after adzes in the colonial period and are numerous in global museum collections. Yet, pounders have not received as much archaeological attention. Stone pounders provide a way of studying the colonial period and the impacts of colonialism on the production and circulation of traditional Polynesian objects by comparing them with adzes from earlier and more recent (pre-Contact to early colonial) periods. This study combines an object itineraries and portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) geochemical study to an assemblage of Marquesan pounders in museum collections to (1) identify stylistic change through time, (2) identify volcanic rock type and match geological sources used to make these artifacts, and (3) consider the impacts of Western colonialism on Marquesan cultural practices. The results of these analyses identified that the distinct Tiki-headed ke’a tuki popoi were produced from a localized region in the Marquesas and that pounders were not produced from the same basalt quarries as adzes. The patterns of stone pounder production and distribution identified in this geochemical study contrast somewhat with the historical accounts from the 19th and 20th centuries and therefore provide a new perspective into Marquesan stone carving practices just prior to and during the early Western colonial period
