Why Open Access? Demonstrating that Open Access articles in ScholarSpace get more citations and more diverse citations than paywalled articles
PosterPersuading students and faculty to take the effort to make their work Open Access can be challenging. One way to help convince them is to show that not only is Open Access better for their readers, but it’s also better for them directly. Our bibliometric study showed that Open Access articles in institutional repositories like UH Manoa’s ScholarSpace receive about 30% more citations than pay articles in the same journal and their citations are about 19% more interdisciplinary. We discuss how this result can help libraries market and sustain their services, and the implications for Open Access

Withdrawal Period of Oxolinic Acid in Cobia (Rachycentron canadum): Validation of an LC-MS/MS Method
Oxolinic acid (OXO) has been routinely used in aquaculture as both prophylactic and chemotherapeutic agents, principally against systemic bacterial infections. The residue depletion of OXO was investigated in cobia following multiple (5 days) in-feed dosing (30 and 60 mg/kg body weight/day) at 25°C; we assessed OXO concentrations of liver and muscle (+skin) samples post-treatment for three weeks. The OXO residues were quantified using a validated ultra-high-performance liquid chromatographytandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) method and the results indicated recoveries of 86.6-95.8%, with relative standard deviations (RSD) less than 8.5% for intra- and inter-day precisions. Within the range of 10−500 ng/g, the calibration curves for all matrices presented a determination coefficient greater than 0.99. Limit of detection and quantification were estimated at 6 and 10 ng/g, respectively. In order to account for the high variability of the residue data, a safety span corresponding to 50% of depletion time could be seen as appropriate. Considering a maximum residue limit (MRL) of 50 ng/g established by the Taiwan FDA for OXO in muscle with skin in natural proportions, a withdrawal period of 15 days was calculated for the sum of 10day depletion time and 5-day safety span. These results revealed that the analytical method is developed for residue OXO and that the withdrawal period is appropriate

This report provides synthesis and commentary about two international scientific
conferences held on Rapa Nui during November 2018. The first conference, the Early
Pacific Migration Conference, brought academics in the Oceanic research community
together to consider Pacific Ocean and island palaeoecology, the migration of humans,
fauna, and flora, ancestral navigation, and archaeology to better understand the myriad of
Oceanic island cultures, environments, and legacies. The second conference, the 1st
International Symposium of Rapa Nui – Heritage,Culture, and Society from aContemporary
Perspective, viewedRapaNui fromamore current standpoint tounderstandChileanstate and
Rapanui local relations, history, anthropology and representation, and cultural and
environmental goals. Together, the two conferences produced 60 papers, conducted multiple
field visits, and provided challenging and rewarding experiences, which highlighted the past
and present of Rapa Nui, to prepare it for the future

The Effect of Water Temperature on Antioxidant and Digestive Flexibility in Miiuy croaker, Miichthys miiuy
Miichthys miiuy is a marine fish with high commercial value that is extensively cultured in China. Seawater temperature is an important factor that affects the cultivation of this fish. However, whether and how seawater temperature affects enzymatic activity during cultivation remains unclear. We treated M. miiuy with average body weight of 232.59 ± 48.79 g with four seawater temperature treatments (13.0, 20.0, 24.0, and 30.0 °C) for 12 days, and measured activities of liver antioxidant enzymes (SOD and CAT) and intestine digestive enzyme (lipases, amylase, and trypsin) at the beginning and end of the treatment. Temperature had a significant effect on the activity levels of antioxidant enzymes. SOD activity decreased from 13.0°C to 24.0°C, and increased at 30.0°C, where SOD activity was highest in samples placed in 30.0°C seawater, and lowest at 24.0°C. There were no clear trends in the CAT activity pattern with increasing temperature, and highest CAT activity levels were observed at 20.0°C and lowest levels were observed at 24.0°C. The activity rates of digestive enzymes were also significantly affected by temperature. However, there were no clear trends in activity pattern with increasing temperature, similar to CAT. Lipase activity was highest at 24.0°C, and amylase activity was highest at 24.0°C. Trypsin activity was similar across the different temperature treatments after 12 days of culturing. The present study investigated the effects of seawater temperature over time on the activities of antioxidant and digestive enzymes in M. miiuy, and the results will help develop better culture practices for M. miiuy
