Con-ticci and the Bennett Monolith of Mocachi
In the late nineteenth century, the Spanish scholar Marcos Jiménez de la Espada
presented his ideas about the Inca god Ticiviracocha or Viracocha at the third
International Congress of Americanists. He argued that a group of white men had
reached South America via a maritime route on the coast of Arica (Chile) or Arequipa
(Peru). In 1932, more than half a century later, American anthropologist Wendell Clark
(W.C.) Bennett participated in archaeological excavations in the southern highlands of
the Andes where a series of stone monoliths were discovered. One of these monolithic
statues, known as the Bennett Monolith of Mocachi, was included on the sail of Thor
Heyerdahl’s Kon-Tiki raft. This paper explores two important elements of Heyerdahl’s
trans-Pacific contact theory: Kon-Tiki and ‘white bearded men’. First, it argues that a
similar idea to Heyerdahl’s conjecture about ‘white bearded men’ in the Americas was
explored by the nineteenth-century Americanist scholar Marcos Jiménez de la Espada,
albeit with a different interpretation surrounding Con-ticci and arguably unbeknownst
to him. Secondly, it explores and contrasts Heyerdahl’s differing view about the
presence of a beard on a monolithic statue from Bolivia with the perspectives of its
discoverer W.C. Bennett in 1932, and the Argentine scholar José Imbelloni. While it
appears that Heyerdahl was not aware of Jiménez de la Espada’s work, his apparent
resolute interpretation of Bennett’s ‘Monolith of Mocachi’ as bearded caused much
controversy among South American academics. It even led to Bennett’s explication of
how a simplified labelling to distinguish the monolith in question in relation to others
led to Heyerdahl’s regard as advancing an erroneous conception surrounding the
presence of ‘bearded white men’ on this continent prior to Columbus. The name Kon-
Tiki was a stylization of part of the name of the Inca deity ‘Con Ticci’ and that of the
Polynesian deity ‘Tiki’

Shifting Focus to Identify Hawaiians in Historical Photographs
Presentation slidesThree panoramic photographs of the Laie Hawaii Temple from the early 1900's show hundreds of native church members and mainland missionaries. No serious attempts have been made to date these photos or to identify the people depicted in them. Methods will be described firstly for determining the correct dates for the photos, and secondly for identifying individuals in them. We will describe pre-pandemic efforts and then pivotal changes which were needed to continue the identification process. Other libraries and archives can benefit from these same procedures in working with their own the correct dates for the photos, and secondly for identifying individuals in them

Evaluation of two extant population sources of Clarias macrocephalus using liver transcriptomic profiles towards reintroduction
There is a need to evaluate and choose a possible population source of the threatened catfish Clarias macrocephalus for possible reintroduction into aquaculture. Identifying gene transcription profiles that provide fitness benefits in specific environments would promote more effective species reintroduction and conservation practices. In this study, comparison of hepatic transcriptome profiles was made in terms of expression patterns of various growth-, immune- and reproduction-related genes of two Clarias macrocephalus strains from Cagayan (CmC) and Agusan del Sur (CmA), located in the Northern and Southern Philippines, respectively. RNA sequencing results showed that there were 13,138 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) identified in CmA vs. CmC, of which 6,795 DEGs exhibited significant upregulation while 6,343 DEGs displayed significant downregulation. From this pool of DEGs, numerous immune- (complements C3, C4, C7), growth- (glutamine synthetase, GLUL; glycogen synthase, GYS; elongation of very long chain fatty acids protein 6, ELOVL6, lipoprotein lipase, LPL) and reproduction-related (vitellogenin, VTG; cytochrome p450 19b-like, CYP19b; progesterone receptor, PGR) genes were identified. Pathway enrichment analysis revealed the enrichment of the complement component and coagulation cascades, protein digestion and absorption and lipid metabolism pathways. Results of this study indicated that when reintroduction was to be done, C. macrocephalus population from Agusan Marsh is predicted to grow much faster because of up-regulated growth-related genes, to be more resistant to pathogens/environmental stressor as it manifested up-regulated immune-related genes and to reproduce better as reflected by its up-regulated reproduction-related genes than its counterpart catfish from Cagayan
