    Vietnamese reduplication shows harmony in tone height between base and reduplicant. This paper presents statistical analysis of productive reduplication in southern Vietnamese, which, unlike northern Vietnamese, has only one C tone and phonation of creakiness is not phonemically present. Our main findings show that reduplicative forms with tone-register harmony are used significantly less often than forms without and that the syllabic structure correlates with tone-register harmony preference

    Terevaka Archaeological Outreach (TAO) 2020 Project Report: Digital Repatriation

    The Ngaro Project presents the products of research and educational outreach conducted by Terevaka Archaeological Outreach (TAO) between 2009 and 2020. The focus of the project is to organize information originally collected by Easter Island resident and activist, Ida Luz “Piru” Hucke Atan, regarding cultural resources from the island that now reside in collections across the world. Visits to twelve museums across the U.S. helped to amass an interactive database of high-resolution images of 447 objects (www.terevaka.net/ngaro). The project not only provides an example of digital repatriation, but also provides a structure for a multimedia, online platform that could lead to additional crowd-sourcing of information to develop a more inclusive approach for museums and Indigenous communities to collaborate in the future

    Effects of dietary pH and acid source on growth and feed efficiency of the Nile Tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus fry

    Two feeding trials were conducted to investigate the effects of dietary pH (pH 2.5, 3.7, 4.6, 5.7-control, pH 7.0, and pH 8.0) and dietary acid source (acetic acid, citric acid, hydrochloric acid and control-no acid) on growth rate and feed utilization efficiency of the Nile tilapia fry. In addition, attractability of the diets at different pH and dietary acid sources were determined. Results of the first feeding trial showed that the feed with pH adjusted to 4.6 resulted in significantly highest final average body weight (FABW), weight gain (WG), specific growth rate (SGR), protein efficiency ratio (PER) and most efficient food conversion ratio (FCR) in the Nile tilapia fry. Survival was 100% in diets with pH 3.7 up to 7.0; the diet with pH 2.5 exhibited significantly lowest survival followed by the pH 8.0 diet. In the second feeding trial, diets that contained hydrochloric, citric or acetic acids that were used to adjust the pH to the optimal 4.6 resulted in higher FABW, WG, SGR, and PER values but lower FCR values than did the control diet; these parameters were not significantly different among the dietary groups. This study demonstrated that the dietary pH promoted growth and efficiency in the Nile tilapia fry and that the three acids that were used were similar in their effects on growth and efficiency. Furthermore, it was demonstrated that either acidifying the diet to pH 4.6 by an inorganic acid such as HCl or the provision of a dietary acidifier such as citric acid or acetic acid could enhance growth, feed efficiency and survival of the Nile tilapia

    Genome-wide identification and expression analysis of Bcl-2 gene family under low-temperature stress in tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus)

    Low temperature stress can lead to variety of changes, including apoptosis in tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). The B cell lymphoma-2 (Bcl-2) gene family plays an important role in the process of apoptosis. The present study conducted genome-wide characterization of the Bcl-2 family genes in tilapia and their mRNA expression profiles were analysed in different tissues of tilapia under the low temperature stress (10°C). Twenty-four Bcl-2 family genes were identified, containing 2~8 exons. These genes were classified into two subfamilies (Bcl-2 homologs and BH3-only) based on their conserved domains. Besides, these BCL-2 proteins in tilapia possess at least one of the four conserved BH domains. The phylogenetic analysis showed that the Bcl-2 family genes did not aggregate by species, demonstrating sequence conservation of different types of Bcl-2 family members. Real-time quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR) analysis showed that Bcl-2 family genes were broadly expressed in different tissues of tilapia. When reared at 10 °C, the transcriptional expression levels of most of anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 homologs subgroup members and other BH3-only subgroup members in most tissues of tilapia were higher than those at 30°C. However, most of other Bcl-2 family members revealed a lower expression. The results suggested that hypothermia had significantly induced apoptotic in tilapia
