Marketing Archival Collections on Your Library Catalog with No Pennies
Presentation slidesSometimes archival collections are quietly kept in a special collection. Archives are a source for historical evidence and factual accounts of activities. They are our recorded memory, story tellers, and are documents for people to provide valuable sources for research and our community. The rise of emerging platforms for archival collections is to make them accessible and discoverable; however, current solutions are enchanting and yet pricey.
This program gives some insight on how to increase visibility of your archival collections through your online catalog and illustrates how to make a bridge between Omeka, archival platform, and Alam, library system, by implementing Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PHM) for repository interoperability. The OAI protocol allows the metadata in Omeka to be discovered in Primo to effectively market our archival collections with no extra cost

Molecular characterization and expression analysis of an antimicrobial peptide, mytimacin-6, in the small abalone, <em>Haliotis diversicolor</em>
Macin is a family of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) and is involved in the immune responses of marine mollusks. In the present study, a novel Mytimacin (denoted as Hd-mtmc 6) was identified from the small abalone Haliotis diversicolor by RNA-seq and RACE techniques. Hd-mtmc 6 contained a coding sequence of 243 bp and encoded 80 amino acids, with a putative peptide mytimacin 6 consisting of 61 amino acid residues. The mature peptide of Hd-mtmc 6 exhibited typical characteristics of AMPs, including net positive charge (+4), higher hydrophobic residue ratio (37%), and lower molecular mass. Eight cysteines in the mature peptide formed four disulfide bond bridges (C1-C6, C2-C5, C3-C7, and C4-C8). Moreover, the presence of the macin domain, a three-dimensional structure similar to that of hydramacin-1, and a phylogenetic relationship suggested that Hd-mtmc 6 could be a new member of the invertebrate macin family. In unchallenged abalone, the Hd-mtmc 6 transcript was expressed in all tested tissues and could be detected at different stages of embryonic development. Vibrio harveyi challenge caused a significant Hd-mtmc 6 transcripts upregulation within 2 - 6 h in the mantle and hepatopancreas. Our results suggested that Hd-mtmc 6 may be involved in innate immune responses of small abalone. Further investigations are required to confirm its antibacterial activity at the protein level
Transcriptome analysis of <em>Marsupenaeus japonicus</em> hepatopancreas during WSSV persistent infection
White Spot Syndrome Virus (WSSV) can cause a large-scale death of cultured shrimp and significant damage to the shrimp farming industry. Marsupenaeus japonicus is one of the world's most important economically farmed shrimp. This study found that some M. japonicus survived the spontaneous outbreak of WSSV. Surprisingly, these virus-carrying shrimp showed no apparent illnesses or outbreaks of white spot disease in the subsequent cultivation, and their body size was substantially smaller than healthy shrimp, indicating a long-term fight between the host and the virus. To investigate this interesting phenomenon, we analyzed the transcriptomes of healthy shrimp and survived shrimp through the RNA-Seq platform, attempting to reveal the underlying molecular mechanism of the struggle between M. japonicus and WSSV. Transcriptional analysis showed that a total of 37,815 unigenes were assembled, with an average length of 1,193.34 bp and N50 of 2,049 bp. In the KEGG pathway, enrichment analysis of DEGs pathways related to immunity, biosynthesis, and growth metabolism was enriched, including pentose phosphate pathway, glycerophospholipid metabolism, fatty acid biosynthesis, Wnt signaling pathway, biosynthesis of amino acids, ascorbate, and aldarate metabolism. Our data showed a delicate balance between M. japonicus and WSSV infection: On the one hand, WSSV infection can cause host metabolism and biosynthesis disorders in the host, and the virus consumes a portion of the material and energy required for shrimp average growth and reproduction. If WSSV infection persisted for a long time, then the growth rate of M. japonicus decreased. On the other hand, the host can regulate immune defense to resist subsequent viral infection. This study reveals the underlying molecular mechanism of a long-term battle of M. japonicus against WSSV infection, providing novel insights for preventing WSSV persistent infection in M. japonicus and other farmed shrimp species
Status, Trends, and Prospects of the Channel Catfish Industry in China and the impact of the Covid-19 epidemic
In 1984, the Fisheries Research Institute of Hubei Province first introduced channel catfish from the US to China. Since then, the production of China's channel catfish has undergone volatile changes. In 2003, as a substitute for Pangasius fillets from Vietnam, the export volume of channel catfish-processed products increased considerably. In recent years, the Chinese channel catfish industry has shifted from dependence on American and European markets to dominance in Chinese markets. It is expected that the continuing impact of the Covid-19 epidemic in China and the development of the global pandemic will significantly affect the channel catfish farming sector in China. This paper outlines China's channel catfish industry's development, markets, costs, and benefits and provides some suggestions for its development
ASAO Special Publications and Distinguished Lectures
The Association for Social Anthropology in Oceania (ASAO)’s Distinguished Lectures, an annual custom that took shape from earlier occasional special talks, sparked its Special Publications series with the publication of Marshall Sahlins’s lecture, Historical Metaphors and Mythical Realities: Structure in the Early History of the Sandwich Islands Kingdom in 1981. Special Publications have been edited by Ivan Brady, Deborah Gewertz, and Lamont Lindstrom. Lectures and Special Publications were married more firmly when an ASAO Board decision limited the series to publishing only Distinguished Lectures. This arrangement decayed after a number of years when no Distinguished Lecture came available for publication. The journal Oceania instead agreed to publish ASAO’s Distinguished Lectures as feature articles in its November issues, and the Special Publication series was discontinued. In this paper I review the history, highlights and lowlights, of these two ASAO enterprises
