Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades, PID2024-161493OB-I00, “Recovering evidence of the past with present-day communities (RecCom).”This book brings recent perspectives on gender and ethnicity in the early modern period together with the results of the interdisciplinary research project, “ArtEmpire” (ERC CoG 648535), to advance the state of the art. Over the last ten years, specialists in African and Latin American History working predominantly in North America have written influential books and articles on related subjects (Bennett, Gauderman, Mangan, McKinley, O’Toole, Van Deusen, Vinson, Wheat, among others). No scholar, however, has examined the uses of gender and ethnicity across the sixteenth- and seventeenth-century isthmus of Panamá, in the port cities of Old Panama, Nombre de Dios and Portobello, or at the Cruces outpost on the Chagres River. At these sites of exchange, life, and death on a precocious artery of world-wide transport and communications, women and men of diverse and often mixed Indigenous American, African and European origins forged and anchored an empire. Rather than imposing present-day categories on the past, this monograph offers a deeply contextualized, bottom-up and fluid reconstruction of gender and ethnicity in and between port cities. It examines matters relevant to present-day concerns, including adaptations to early globalisation that facilitated cultural and biological survival.
Poor conservation of local archival materials due to humidity, fire and other factors, has long impeded bottom-up historical research on the sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Panamanian crossing (Wade, Castillero, Mena). This circumstance justified renewed scrutiny of the diverse holdings of the Archivo General de Indias in Seville, including the less-studied Contratación and Justicia, sections, as well as uncharted forays in the archives of Bogotá, Lima and Madrid. It has also led to two archaeological excavation campaigns undertaken in collaboration with Patronato Panamá Viejo, which have cast new light on Panama Viejo’s under-documented female and African majorities. Rather than a dearth of material, an abundance of fragmentary evidence recalls the lives that anchored an empire.Departamento de Geografía, Historia y Filosofía, Universidad Pablo de Olavide, Sevill
Insulae hereditariae
ABSTRACT: The urban development of Rome gave rise to new social needs, such as the insulae or family housing units built into buildings of the same name. In this work, attention is paid to the echo of this phenomenon in the jurisprudential texts on succession matters and other mortis causa negotia. This especially reinforces the identification of the insula as a differentiated res by considering it a certain object that transcends the mere inter vivos activity.
A study was conducted in Tlalnepantla, in the Metropolitan Area of the Valley of Mexico, with the original objective of assessing the impact of the Tenayuca archaeological site on sustainable development, from the perspective of the municipality’s inhabitants and considering its use as a tourist attraction. Surveys and interviews were administered, and it was identified that other types of heritage exist which seem to represent a process of heritage symbolization, related to the urban context and the subjectivities of inhabiting the city, linked to personal affections and memories, but distinct and independent from their
supposed contemporary uses and their contribution to sustainable development. In addition to Tenayuca, the analysis will cover the public sculpture Muro Amarillo, which is representative of emotional architecture, and the festivities of San Juan Bautista in San Juan Ixtacala. Ethnographic observation was carried out for these cases, with the aim of presenting the preliminary analysis and the need to build a specific theoretical model for heritage located in cities.Área de Historia del Art
This text will reflect on the case of the original Ralámuli cultural area in Chihuahua, Mexico, around local practices and rituals that cyclically redefine experiences of sublime territory and how they activate indigenous identity processes that are resilient over time. Two temporalities will be put into dialogue in a photographic corpus: records of the Norwegian explorer Carl Lumholtz in the Ralámuli area at the end of the 19th century and my visual
record from 2010 of a field visit to the festive practices of Holy Week in the municipalities of Guachochi and Urique, in interlocution with Lumholtz’s own period publications, specialized rereadings of his work, recent ethnohistorical and anthropological investigations of the Ralámuli area, photographic theory, image analysis and visual anthropology and the links between the sublime and its visual representations.Área de Historia del Art
The alternative penal measure in substance use disorders: Article 80.5 of the Criminal Code and psychiatric medical treatment
This paper deals with aspects of clinical criminology that are evident in the assessment of the risk of recidivism of future criminal behaviour. The risk factor of drug addiction is present in a significant variety of crimes, such as crimes against public health, crimes against property, crimes against physical and psychological integrity, crimes against life, and crimes against sexual freedom, among others, either alone or in combination. The application of psychiatric medical treatment requires specific therapeutic guidelines prescribed by a psychiatric specialist in an open or closed setting that allows for the effective implementation of tertiary prevention for those convicted of crimes whose conduct is influenced by a diagnosed psychiatric disorder. In this regard, Article 80.5 of the Criminal Code regulates the suspension of sentences in cases of substance use disorders. For its application, a forensic medical assessment of the need for drug addiction treatment in an appropriate center is required, and therapeutic completion is mandatory.Universidad Pablo de Olavid

Queenship and wickedness in the Weibermacht. Brunhild and Fredegund in Early Modern Engravings
The figures of Brunhild and Fredegund have been linked by a latent myth, disregarded by part of contemporary historiography. The story of two queens captivated by the idea of power, overwhelmed by greed or desire, and destined for a bloody punishment; a legend that serves as a warning against the expectations imposed on women and the complacency of men. Drawing on the concept of visual rhetoric proposed by the Weibermacht (Power of Women), the following study focuses on the analysis of both figures during the Early Modern period, predominantly represented through engravings with a clear moral or emblematic purpose aimed at guiding the behavior of men and women, influenced by Christian values and their gender perspective, helping to shape, specifically, the character of royalty.Área de Historia del Art
Cu or Fe-Exchanged Natural Clinoptilolite as Sustainable Light-Assisted Catalyst for Water Disinfection at Near Neutral pH
Natural zeolites can be used to obtain effective catalysts for heterogeneous photocatalytic reactions due to their low cost and favorable physicochemical properties for water treatment. In this work, a natural clinoptilolite is modified by incorporating iron (NZ–Fe) and copper (NZ–Cu) as compensation cations through ion exchange processes. Metals incorporation and structural stability are demonstrated through X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. DR-UV–Vis measurements are used to estimate the bandgap and predict the photocatalytic performance of both materials. Their effectiviness in heterogeneous photocatalytic systems is confirmed by evaluating the inactivation of E. coli as a model pathogen in water. The bacterial detection limit (initial ≈106 CFU/mL) is reached using 1 gL−1 of both catalysts, 100 ppm of H2O2 under visible light (410–710 nm) and near neutral pH in 2 h, with no post-treatment regrowth observed. Experimental data are analyzed according to the Chick–Watson, Weibull, and Hom disinfection kinetic models. Although more hydroxyl radicals are generated (trapping tests) and less iron leachate is observed for NZ–Fe, good reusability is attained for three disinfection cycles when NZ–Cu is used. This makes copper-exchanged clinoptilolite a suitable and low-cost photocatalyst for water disinfection through heterogeneous photo-Fenton-type processes.Departamento de Biología Molecular e Ingeniería Bioquímic
Spatial and temporal distribution of macrobenthic polychaetes (Animalia: Annelida) comparing mangrove forest and aquaculture zone at Karimunjawa Island, Jepara District, Indonesia
Polychaetes are bioindicator of pollution in a water area due to their high abundance and sensitivity to different organic matter content in sediment. This study aimed to determine the type and structure of the community and the correlation of polychaeta community structure with environmental characteristics in the waters of the mangrove area and the aquaculture zone of BTN Karimunjawa, Central Java. Sampling was done using the Random Sampling method at three stations each in KJABB IMTA, monoculture and mangrove. Data processing using Two-way ANOVA test, k-dominance curve, Multidimensional Scaling (MDS), Principal Component Analysis (PCA), and BIO-ENV. In this study, 9 families and 16 genera of polychaeta were obtained and Spionidae family group ranked first in the abundance of organisms. The calculation of the index shows that the level of diversity and uniformity is low-medium, with no dominance in general. Based on the results of the Two-way ANOVA test showed no significant differences in the composition of polychaeta variability, spatially and temporally. The MDS ordination plot shows the grouping of organism variability between stations based on their biological composition. Further analysis using k-dominance curves showed that station 2 monoculture had the highest level of diversity and the lowest level of dominance. BIO-ENV analysis proves that environmental parameters with a strong influence on polychaeta abundance include C-organic, pH and coarse sand fraction (r: 0.418). PCA analysis showed clustering based on sediment substrate size composition (silt, coarse sand, gravel). This study indicates that polychaeta community structure between stations and periods showed no significant differences, and the relationship between biotic and abiotic parameters showed that C-organic, pH and coarse sand fraction are some of the abiotic parameters that most affect the abundance of polychaeta.Departamento de Biología Molecular e Ingeniería Bioquímic
