Mark Strand and Octavio Paz: The Universality of Poetry, or a Friendship in Translation
Embargado hasta 01/01/2100This essay explores aesthetic and intellectual affinities between the rhyming sensibilities of poet-translators Mark Strand and Octavio Paz—close friends who admired each other deeply and translated each other’s poems as monuments to their respective work and friendship. The two became friends in the late 1960s, while preparing the anthology New Poetry of Mexico (1970). They spent time together, corresponded, and discussed poetry and politics. Paz admired the transparent verbal perfection of Strand’s poetry. Strand admired Paz’s generosity, intelligence, and steadfast poetic vocation. Both shared not only a nomadic existence, but also conceptions of poetry and translation. This essay’s four movements include a bio-bibliographical note on Strand and Paz highlighting the striking symmetries between their lives, discussion of their work as poet-translators and the fundamental tenets of their theory on translation, Strand’s translation of Paz’s poems and Paz’s translation of Strand’s into their respective mother tongues, and elucidation of the reasons for their choice of these poems. Ultimately, the poets’ biographical and aesthetic similarities and their work as poet-translators testify to the universality of poetry—to a single vast poem and endless work in progress to which they contributed with the oeuvre of a lifetime
The present work analyses the control of information transparency in the formally predisposed clauses affecting the main object of the contract. In order to do so, it takes the study of the Judgement of TJUE from June 3, 2010 as the starting point and uses the Judgement of the TS from May 9, 2013 as its main reference, whose reasoning is confirmed, with a general character, by the recent Judgement of the TS from September 8, 2014. The purpose of this work is to clarify the legal nature of the control of information transparency and its role in the control of the general contracting conditions. An adequate delimitation of this subject allows casting light on the possible control of the formally predisposed clauses affecting the economic part of the contract

Genetic determination of the onset of heat stress on daily milk production in the U.S. Holstein cattle
Embargado hasta 01-01-2100Existence of individual variation in the onset of heat stress for daily milk yield of dairy cows was assessed. Data included 353,376 test-day records of 38,383 first-parity Holsteins from a random sample of US herds. Three hierarchical models were investigated. Model 1 inferred the value of a temperature-humidity index (THI) at which mean yield began to decline as well as the extent of that decline. Model 2 assumed individual variation in yield decline beyond a common THI threshold. Model 3 additionally assumed individual variation for the onset of heat stress. Deviance information criteria indicated the superiority of model 3 over model 2. For model 2, genetic correlation between milk yield in the absence of heat stress and the THI threshold for heat stress was −0.4 (0.11) [marginal posterior mean (marginal posterior standard deviation)]. For model 3, genetic correlations were −0.53 (0.05) between milk yield and THI threshold and −0.62 (0.08) between milk yield and yield decay beyond the THI threshold. Total standard deviation (sum of additive genetic and permanent environmental standard deviations) for the THI threshold was 3.95 (0.06), and more than half of that variation had an additive genetic origin [56% (5%)]. Because of the high genetic correlation [0.95 (0.03)] between yield decay and THI threshold with model 3, using only one of them as a selection criterion for heat tolerance would modify the other in the desired direction
Mediterranean diet, moderate-to-high intensity training, and health-related quality of life in adults with metabolic syndrome
Embargado hasta 01/01/2100Background: Much recent research has focused on the benefits of the Mediterranean diet on risk factors of metabolic syndrome (MetS). In addition numerous investigations have also demonstrated that moderate and high-intensity endur- ance training may induce greater beneficial adaptations in body composition and cardiometabolic risk than low-intensity endurance training. How a model of Mediterranean diet with and without moderate-to-high intensity training influences health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and physical fitness in MetS patients is unknown.
Design and methods: A total of 45 sedentary MetS males and females (50–66 years) were randomly divided into two groups: (a) hypocaloric, normoproteic Mediterranean diet (MeD); and (b) the same diet plus periodized moderate- to-high intensity training (MeDE) for 12 weeks. HRQoL (EuroQol and SF-36 questionnaires), fitness, response to submaximal exercise, and risk factors of MetS were determined before and after treatment.
Results: MeD improved some physical and mental domains of HRQoL (physical function, vitality, general physical health, emotional role, and self-perception of health) and resulted in weight loss and improvement of MetS risk factors (intra- group p < 0.05). Moreover, the MeDE intervention resulted in greater improvement in these domains and the improve- ment of other HRQoL components (physical role, bodily pain, social function, and health profile). MeDE increased physical fitness, resulted in a better physiological response to submaximal effort and caused a greater weight loss (intra- group and inter-group, p < 0.05).
Conclusions: A model of hypocaloric Mediterranean diet combined with periodized moderate-to-high intensity training may lead to greater improvement in HRQoL through a greater effect on physical and functional fitness, bodyweight, and risk factors than diet alone
