No full textEmbargado hasta 01/01/2100Mutations in the MED13L gene, which encodes a subunit of a transcriptional regulatory complex, result in a complex phenotype entailing physical and cognitive anomalies. Deep language impairment has been reported in affected individuals, mostly in patients with copy number variations. We report on a child with a nonsynonymous p.Cys63Arg change in MED13L (chr12:116675396A>G, GRCh37) who exhibits profound language impairment in the expressive domain, cognitive delay, behavioral disturbances, and an autism-like phenotype. Because of the brain areas in which MED13L is expressed and because of the functional links between MED13L and the products of selected candidate genes for cognitive disorders involving language deficits, the proband's linguistic phenotype may result from changes in a functional network important for language development and evolution
Subtitling documentaries: A learning tool for enhancing scientific translation skills
Get PDFEmbargado hasta 01/01/2100This paper examines the use of subtitles as a learning tool for developing skills required for scientific translation, in the framework of the course "Scientific and Technical Translation" included in the Translation and Interpreting Studies degree at the University of Cordoba. For that purpose, in the present study we aim to discuss and describe the benefits provided by this modality of audiovisual translation by presenting an overview of the previous studies focused on the effectiveness of subtitling in foreign language (FL) learning. However, we intend to go deeper and propose the integration of subtitling not only in translation studies curriculum, but more specifically, in a scientific translation course. Furthermore, the documentary genre is postulated as an optimal audiovisual media to be used for FL specialised language learning. The subtitling activity consisted of three stages: viewing of an informational documentary short movie with original English subtitles, documentation, and translation into Spanish. In order to confirm whether this subtitling practice raises students' motivation and, as a result, brings positive learning results, this study is based on the responses obtained in a questionnaire completed by the participants in the experiment. The main questions are related to the role of multiple semiotic systems as a support for textual comprehension and learning, and the acquisition of specialised terminology, as well as the students' motivation towards a simulation of a professional translation assignment
Proteasome Dysfunction Associated to Oxidative Stress and Proteotoxicity in Adipocytes Compromises Insulin Sensitivity in Human Obesity
No full textAims: Obesity is characterized by a low-grade systemic inflammatory state and adipose tissue (AT) dysfunction, which predispose individuals to the development of insulin resistance (IR) and metabolic disease. However, a subset of obese individuals, referred to as metabolically healthy obese (MHO) individuals, are protected from obesity-associated metabolic abnormalities. Here, we aim at identifying molecular factors and pathways in adipocytes that are responsible for the progression from the insulin-sensitive to the insulin-resistant, metabolically unhealthy obese (MUHO) phenotype.
Results: Proteomic analysis of paired samples of adipocytes from subcutaneous (SC) and omental (OM) human AT revealed that both types of cells are altered in the MUHO state. Specifically, the glutathione redox cycle and other antioxidant defense systems as well as the protein-folding machinery were dysregulated and endoplasmic reticulum stress was increased in adipocytes from IR subjects. Moreover, proteasome activity was also compromised in adipocytes of MUHO individuals, which was associated with enhanced accumulation of oxidized and ubiquitinated proteins in these cells. Proteasome activity was also impaired in adipocytes of diet-induced obese mice and in 3T3-L1 adipocytes exposed to palmitate. In line with these data, proteasome inhibition significantly impaired insulin signaling in 3T3-L1 adipocytes.
Innovation: This study provides the first evidence of the occurrence of protein homeostasis deregulation in adipocytes in human obesity, which, together with oxidative damage, interferes with insulin signaling in these cells.
Conclusion: Our results suggest that proteasomal dysfunction and impaired proteostasis in adipocytes, resulting from protein oxidation and/or misfolding, constitute major pathogenic mechanisms in the development of IR in obesity

criteria for a future Protected Designation of Origin, which includes citrus blossom honey as one of the
monofloral types produced in that region. Thus, a content in pollen of Citrus sp. ‡5%, Maurizio classes I and II was established, the accompanying pollen spectrum characteristic being that composed by the Myrtus, Echium, Lavandula, Reseda, Quercus, Olea, Crataegus and Cistus pollen types. The physicochemical parameters set were electrical conductivity £0.27 mS cm)1; diastase activity‡ 6 diastase number; colour £20 mm Pfund and coordinate CIE-Lab L = 89.72–95.18, a = )1.28 to 1.05, b = 16.99–21.79, C = 17–21.82, H = 87.23 –92.01 ; hydroximethylfurfural £10 mg kg)1; free acidity £28 milliequivalents ⁄ litre and moisture £18.5%. From the sensorial study, the following profile, based on the evaluation of attributes on a five-point scale, was obtained: colour white–pale yellow, fluidity (4.22), odour intensity (3.55), citrus blossom aroma ⁄ odour intensity (3.6 ⁄ 3.8), sweetness (3.14), acidity (2.36), freshness (61.5%) and persistence (2.9)

No full textEmbargado hasta 01/01/2100Traditional feminine description and roles within Western literary and artistic cultural artifacts have tended to portray women in very a specific way – one which creates, disseminates and consolidates the gender roles which became foundational to heteropatriarchy and, sometimes, male chauvinism. As an example, women in poetry are often portrayed as fragile, sweet, romanticized creatures who ignite masculine desire or bolster male artists’ creativity. In this sense, most Western lyrical traditions present women as either objects of desire or inspirational muses. These secondary roles, which transform women into subalterns, can also be seen in other artistic manifestations, such as painting and sculpture or, more recently, films, TV fictions, graphic novels and videogames. This volume offers a multidisciplinary approach to the topic of feminine representation in literature and the arts, presenting womanhood from new perspectives which highlight feminine characters who have traditionally been neglected, misrepresented or reduced to marginal roles
