The aim of the following paper is to analyse the influence of the CEO's personal characteristics on the cash held by companies. In this study based on a sample of 85 companies (excluding those in the financial sector), using data from the year 2022. The results indicated that CEOs with a university education in economics have a negative and significant influence on their companies' cash holdings. In addition, a positive and significant relationship was identified between cash holdings and financial variables such as indebtedness, working capital and profitability of the analysed companies. This study suggests that the specific academic background of the CEO, in this case in economics, may be an important determinant of corporate cash policies

Open Strategic Autonomy as an instrument of European Union integration

    No full text
The expression "Open Strategic Autonomy" of the European Union is linked to its influence on the world stage. The influence is an independent position with other international actors in order to safeguard the interests of the European Union. "Open Strategic Autonomy" it can be explained as a normative instrument of the European Union. All this follows from the Proposal for a Regulation the protection of the Union and its Member States from economic coercion by third countries. The new normative instrument allows the European Union to apply countermeasures to third countries that apply coercive measures to Member States

Electrochemically generated CuI and CuSCN nanocrystals on Cu surfaces as Raman enhancing substrates

    No full text
Raman enhancing strategies, such as Surface-Enhance Raman scattering (SERS), are a key piece for the development of spectroscopic and analytical strategies based on Raman spectroscopy, due to the intrinsic low sensitivity of the Raman scattering. Some years ago, our group reported an unexpected Raman enhancement process observed during the electrochemical oxidation of metallic electrodes, named Electrochemical Oxidation Surface-Enhanced Raman scattering (EC-SOERS). This Raman enhancement phenomenon was recently explained as an interaction of the analyte and the SERS dielectric substrate promoted by a metal cation. The elucidation of the origin of this enhancement is now leading to the development of new Raman enhancing substrates, such as copper-based substrates. In this work, we present an overview of the use of copper electrodes as EC-SOERS substrates. The presented strategies allow the electrosynthesis of SERS-active CuI nanocrystals on a metallic copper surface, which provides Raman enhancement for a wide number of molecules. The influence of the electrochemical conditions and the structure of the studied molecules are discussed. The use of CuSCN nanocrystals is also explored as substrates to promote Raman enhancement.Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación and Agencia Estatal de Investigación (MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033, PID2020-113154RB-C21), Junta de Castilla y León and European Regional Development Fund (Grant number: BU036P23), Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades (RED2022-134120-T) are gratefully acknowledged for funding this work. Updated study of adult and subadult pectoral girdle bones from Sima de los Huesos site (Sierra de Atapuerca, Burgos, Spain). Anatomical and age estimation keys

    No full text
Here we present an updated inventory and study of pectoral girdle remains recovered from the Sima de los Huesos (SH) site. Here, we describe the key morphological traits of adults and, for the first time, subadult specimens. Because morphological traits can change with age, we also discuss some shortcomings related to age estimation in postcranial fossil specimens. Adult clavicles from the SH are long with a low robusticity index and marked curvatures in the superior view. Among these traits, only extreme clavicular length seems to characterize subadult individuals. Neandertals share all these traits. In the case of the scapula, the SH specimens share a relatively long and narrow glenoid fossa with Neandertals. This trait is also present in subadult individuals. Additionally, most specimens from SH, adults, and subadults showed a dorsal axillary sulcus on the scapular lateral border, a trait also present in most adult and subadult Neandertals. These traits in adult and subadult specimens supports substantial genetic control for many of them in both human species. The Atapuerca research project was financed by the Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación of Spain (grant number MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033/FEDER) (UE grant number PID2021-122355NB-C31). Cultural Adaptation of the Expectancy-Value-Cost Scale for Spanish-Speaking Students

    No full text
The Expectancy-Value model has been extensively used to understand students' achievement motivation. However, recent studies propose the inclusion of cost as a separate construct from values, leading to the development of the Expectancy-Value-Cost model. This study aimed to adapt Kosovich et al.’s (The Journal of Early Adolescence, 35, 5–6, 2015) instrument for assessing achievement motivation in science and math among Spanish-speaking students aged 9–12. The psychometric evaluation encompassed examining validity, reliability, and measurement invariance for gender. The findings support the applicability of the expectancy-value-cost model in elementary school students, providing a valid and reliable tool for assessing achievement motivation in the science and math domain. However, the findings for the measurement invariance for gender are less conclusive and warrant future psychometric evaluations. This study opens avenues for future research on achievement motivation in Spanish-speaking contexts and populations. The author(s) disclosed receipt of the following financial support for the research, authorship, and/or publication of this article: This work was supported by the Agencia Estatal de Investigación (PID2020-117348RB-I00)

Current situation and challenges in efl teacher education in the European Union with respect to gender and sexual-affective diversity

    No full text
Gender identity and sexual diversity remain significant sources of discrimination in the 21st century, exacerbated by pervasive androcentrism, cisnormativity, and heteronormativity. In the context of the European Union (EU), education is critical for fostering social cohesion among an increasingly multicultural population due to migration and mobility. Initial Language Teacher Education (ILTE) plays a pivotal role in preparing future educators to instill values of diversity, inclusion, and interculturality. Despite the EU's efforts to unify educational frameworks through programs like Erasmus+ and initiatives such as the European Language Portfolio, discrepancies persist across member states regarding language teacher training curricula. These variations hinder the broader aim of creating an inclusive, cohesive educational system grounded in human rights and equality, particularly concerning gender and sexual diversity. This paper explores the challenges and proposes the need for a unified ILTE training that integrates the principles of inclusivity, social diversity, and respect for all identities

The Service Learning project, ‘Relationship and Occupation for Wellbeing’, is an initiative at the University aimed at first-year Occupational Therapy students. The project connects these students with elderly residents in various care homes, using an educational methodology that integrates the acquisition of academic knowledge and skills with community service. The primary objective of this research is to explore how university students perceive the health science competencies they gain through participation in a service learning programme. In the study, 80 students engaged in practical activities that addressed real community needs, such as providing care for elderly residents. These activities allowed students to apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes essential to their future profession. The project spanned three days, during which groups of 5-6 students made visits lasting 90 to 120 minutes to nursing homes. Following each visit, students were required to write an individual reflection on their experience. The skills most commonly practiced by the students were active listening and empathy. In terms of overall performance, the average competency score was 2.01 out of 3. In conclusion, the reflective process helped students gain a deeper understanding of the meaning and impact of their service, allowing them to more effectively connect their academic learning with their practical experiences. This project not only offers students valuable hands-on experience but also provides a meaningful service to the elderly community living in residential care homes
