Quantum field theory at finite temperature for 3D periodic backgrounds
The one-loop quantum corrections to the internal energy of some lattices due to the quantum fluctuations of the scalar field of phonons are studied. The band spectrum of the lattice is characterised in terms of the scattering data, allowing to compute the quantum vacuum interaction energy between nodes at zero temperature, as well as the total Helmholtz free energy, the entropy, and the Casimir pressure between nodes at finite non-zero temperature. Some examples of periodic potentials built from the repetition in one of the three spatial dimensions of the same punctual or compact supported potential are addressed: a stack of parallel plates constructed by positioning
-functions at the lattice nodes, and an 'upside-down tiled roof' of parallel two-dimensional Pöschl–Teller wells centred at the nodes. They will be called generalised Dirac comb and Pöschl–Teller comb, respectively. Positive one-loop quantum corrections to the entropy appear for both combs at non-zero temperatures. Moreover, the Casimir force between the lattice nodes is always repulsive for both chains when non-trivial temperatures are considered, implying that the primitive cell increases its size due to the quantum interaction of the phonon field. This research was supported by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation MICIN with funding from European Union NextGenerationEU (PRTRC17.I1) and by the Regional Government of Castilla y Le´on (Junta de Castilla y Le´on, Spain) through QCAYLE project

Comuni Kids

Understanding and supporting wearable technologies for freedivers
In recent years wearables have evolved significantly both for mainstream wearables and wearables for freediving. Hardware and Software capabilities like new sensors, touch screens and new humanmachine interaction methods gave rise to new use cases for wearables, such as navigation support, making payments or routing below the water surface. While wearable devices in general are currently being widely examined and researched, there is a clear lack in both commercial devices and scientific literature in regard to wearable devices for divers; especially freedivers. Thus, litle to none support exists for freedivers to improve the general safety of the dive and all surrounding activities. The goal of this thesis is to contribute systems that support the freediver and to ground these systems‘ designs in an understanding of user behaviour. Furthermore, this work is intended to advance research in a scientific context and to identify gaps
Evolution of Cantabrian small mammal communities in response to climatic and anthropogenic factors from the second half of the Upper Pleistocene to the recent Holocene
In this thesis, the study of 29 associations of micromammals from thirteen sites in the Cantabrian region, a geographical area in the north of the Iberian Peninsula characterised by its rugged topography and its location at the southwestern end of the Eurosiberian biogeographic region, in contact with the Mediterranean region, is presented. This analysis has made a significant contribution to the knowledge of the environmental and climatic dynamics in this region from the second half of the Upper Pleistocene to the Holocene. This interval includes the isotopic stages MIS 3, MIS 2, and MIS 1, each with distinct climatic characteristics. Through meticulous processing of the samples, as well as the performance of taxonomic determinations based on detailed biometric and morphological analyses, we have managed to identify 31 different taxa belonging to the orders Lagomorpha, Rodentia, Eulipotyphla, and Chiroptera. This has provided us with a rich source of data on the taxonomy of micromammals in the region, as well as valuable information at a paleobiogeographic and paleoecological level. In the Upper Pleistocene epoch context, we identified Arvicolines as one of the most informative groups for understanding this period's environmental and ecological dynamics. Regarding these rodents, our work has made significant contributions to the knowledge of the paleoecology and biochronology of the Brasov vole (Pliomys coronensis), as well as to the understanding of the paleobiogeography of field voles (Microtus (Euarvicola) spp.) and common voles (Microtus (Microtus) arvalis) in the region, especially concerning their response to climatic and environmental changes. As for the Muridae, we provide new data on the presence of the yellow-necked mouse (Apodemus (Sylvaemus) flavicollis) in the MIS 3 record of the region. The location of these findings near the pre-coastal sierras of eastern Asturias suggests that the Atlantic slopes of these mountains might have served as refuges for the forest habitats required by this species. This thesis also documents the earliest records on the Peninsula of the house mouse (Mus musculus) and the harvest mouse (Micromys minutus). These biological invasions are analysed in the context of the arrival of steppe pastoralists during the Metal Age. We have also made significant contributions to the knowledge of the paleoecology of the greater white-toothed shrew (Crocidura russula) and the lesser white-toothed shrew (Crocidura gueldenstaedtii), as well as to the climatic conditions that led to the dominance of the Crocidura genus over species of the Sorex genus (red-toothed shrews) towards the end of the Holocene. Furthermore, one of our most notable advancements within this group (Family Soricidae) relates to the taxonomy, biochronology, paleoecology, and paleobiogeography of the subspecies of the Eurasian water shrew (Neomys fodiens niethammeri and Neomys fodiens fodiens) and the Mediterranean water shrew (Neomys anomalus). Regarding the Talpidae, it is worth highlighting the recognition of two morphotypes corresponding to the Iberian mole (Talpa occidentalis) and the Aquitanian mole (Talpa aquitania). Additionally, the occurrence of Talpa aquitania in Punta Lucero III represents the first identification of the species on fossil remains. Furthermore, we have conducted an exhaustive comparative analysis of our data with that obtained from another 43 regional records. This study has revealed that during MIS 3, a period characterised by abrupt climatic oscillations with moments of intense cold, the small mammal associations show an interesting composition in which thermophilic taxa predominate, with occasional presence of others indicative of cold climate. The paleoenvironmental implications of this association reflect an open, steppe-like landscape with limited forest cover. In contrast, MIS 2 was characterised by a cold environment that led to the migration and settlement of northern and alpine faunas, decreasing diversity and equitability in the small mammal communities. Conversely, during MIS 1, there was a transition to more forested and thermophilic communities, especially in the first half of the Holocene. Additionally, this study highlights how, towards the end of MIS 1, the expansion of agriculture and livestock farming, in combination with other climatic factors, caused significant changes in ecosystems. In this line, the appearance of humancommensal species, along with the reduction of taxa with forest affinities and the increase in faunas with Mediterranean affinities, demonstrates a notable transformation in landscapes and biological communities, resulting from the interaction between climatic and anthropogenic factors
Size effect on the flexural fatigue behavior of high-strength plain and fiber-reinforced concrete
This paper studies the size effect on flexural fatigue in concrete. In particular, the main objective is to evaluate how the addition and content of steel fibers affect this size effect. For this purpose, four types of concrete have been produced: plain and reinforced concrete with fiber contents of 0.3%, 0.6% and 1%. Two prismatic specimen sizes were considered: 75×75×300 mm, named S, and 150×150×600 mm, named L. All specimens were subjected to 3-point bending fatigue at the same relative stress levels up to failure. The results reveal very interesting conclusions. The fibers mitigate the size effect on fatigue life, going from a difference of three orders of magnitude in PC, to practically zero in SFRC. Furthermore, it is observed that fibers do not necessarily improve fatigue life; in fact, the trend changes depending on specimen size. Finally, it is shown that the secondary crack opening rate dCMOD/dn has a good correlation with fatigue life, explaining the dispersion of N in general and the size effect in particular. The authors are grateful for the financial support of the Spanish Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad (grant no. Degradation under cyclic wet-dry aging of full-scale high-workability concrete maximizing sustainable raw materials
Analyzing and validating the behavior of sustainable concrete mixes under near-realistic conditions is essential to advance their use. In this research, full-scale high-workability concretes, 0.5 m3 in volume, containing maximum amounts of sustainable raw materials and their response in cyclic wet-dry tests are studied. The mixtures contained Electric Arc Furnace Slag (EAFS) and Recycled Concrete Aggregate (RCA) as aggregates, and Ladle Furnace Slag (LFS) and Ground Granulated Blast-furnace Slag (GGBS) as binders. Each mixture underwent 30 wet-dry cycles with temperature variations between 20 °C and 70 °C. Throughout the cycles, the internal-damage level was assessed through (increasing) weight measurements, (decreasing) ultrasonic-pulse-velocity readings, thermal strain, hardened-property variations, and flexural deformability. Overall, all the mixes underwent initial internal damage, attributable to both the thermal shock that increased with each cycle and the aging of the cementitious matrix, which in turn resulted in shrinking that reduced their thermal deformability. A linear thermal expansion coefficient of 1.6·10-5 °C-1 was adequate for safely estimating all the maximum thermal strains. Internal damage was less relevant with the use of EAFS and GGBS that led to fewer strength decreases, which were only 15–20% compared to 25–30% in the RCA mixes. However, the combination of EAFS and LFS increased flexural deformability after the test, which resulted in compliance under bending stresses that was two times higher than in the other mixes. Under those conditions, the joint use of EAFS and GGBS was the most recommendable multi-criteria and multi-purpose option where any change in concrete composition significantly affected behavior. This research work was supported by the Spanish Ministry of Universities, MICINN, AEI, EU, “ERDF A way of making Europe”, by the “European Union” and NextGenerationEU/PRTR [grant numbers PID2020-113837RB-I00; PID2021-124203OB-I00; PID2023-146642OB-I00; 10.13039/501100011033; TED2021-129715B-I00; FPU21/04364]; the Junta de Castilla y León (Regional Government) and ERDF [grant number UIC-231; BU033P23; BU066-22]; the Basque Government [IT1619-22 SAREN research group]; and, finally, the University of Burgos [grant number SUCONS, Y135.GI]
STEAM integrada y la RE.The implementation of integrated STEM education together with educational
robotics (ER) in both Primary Education (PE) and Compulsory Secondary Education
(CSE) are topics of great educational interest, which is why it is necessary to
investigate their theoretical and practical postulates. A systematic review of the
characteristics of good practice in implementing both educational approaches in
Spain in both PE and CSE is presented. The compilation process is described and
the theoretical and practical coherence of the characteristics of good practice in the
light of the world scientific literature is discussed. The importance of using
cooperative and collaborative learning together with project-based learning (PBL),
using constructible and programmable robots such as Lego Mindstorms or made
with low-cost materials, is obtained from the PE stage. In addition, a coherent
implementation of integrated STEM education is also highlighted, and educational
inclusion needs to be improved. Regarding the CSE stage, the use of cooperative
and collaborative learning together with PBL and the robust implementation of
integrated STEM education stand out, advising the use of scientific enquiry and the
engineering design process using integrated models. The consistent use of the Lego
Mindstorms kit is emphasised, including as an enhancement the use of robots
constructed from low-cost materials. The development of teamwork, critical thinking
and problem-solving skills is of vital importance, and is encouraged through pupils'
participation in ER tournaments. Finally, aspects such as gender equality and
educational inclusion should be improved. Future lines of research include the study
of good practices addressed in Europe and the world through integrated STEAM
education and ER
