Effects of mobile phone-related distraction on driving performance at roundabouts: Eye movements tracking perspective
Modern road infrastructures are complex networks featuring various elements such as roads, bridges, intersections, and roundabouts, with advanced control systems. Roundabouts have gained prominence as a safer alternative to traditional intersections promoting smoother traffic flow and fewer collisions by guiding traffic in one direction, encouraging reduced speed, and minimizing conflict points.
This study investigated driver behavior within roundabouts, focusing on gaze behavior, particularly the left-side mirror and window, under mobile phone distraction conditions. In addition, the effects of roundabout specifications (i.e., number of lanes and size of the central island) and the drivers’ characteristics (i.e., driving experience) were examined.
In total, 43 participants, aged 19–56 years including 30 males and 13 females, held a valid driving license, drove through a virtual simulated urban road containing four roundabouts, implemented in a static driving simulator, under baseline condition (no distraction) as well as mobile-induced distraction. Driving simulator data were collected and drivers’ gaze direction and fixation on nine areas of interest were captured with an eye tracker. This project was funded by FEDER European Regional Development Fund (Fondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional—Junta de Castilla y León, Spain), grant number BU300P18. Evaluation of the novelty effect in immersive Virtual Reality learning experiences
In this study, the novelty effect or initial fascination with new technology is addressed in the context of an immersive Virtual Reality (iVR) experience. The novelty effect is a significant factor contributing to low learning outcomes during initial VR learning experiences. The aim of this research is to measure the effectiveness of a tutorial at mitigating the novelty effect of iVR learning environments among first-year undergraduate students. The iVR tutorial forms part of the iVR learning experience that involves the assembly of a personal computer, while learning the functions of the main components. 86 students participated in the study, divided into a Control group (without access to the tutorial) and a Treatment group (completing the tutorial). Both groups showed a clear bimodal distribution in previous knowledge, due to previous experience with learning topics, giving us an opportunity to compare tutorial effects with students of different backgrounds. Pre- and post-test questionnaires were used to evaluate the experience. The analysis included such factors as previous knowledge, usability, satisfaction, and learning outcomes categorized into remembering, understanding, and evaluation. The results demonstrated that the tutorial significantly increased overall satisfaction, reduced the learning time required for iVR mechanics, and improved levels of student understanding, and evaluation knowledge. Furthermore, the tutorial helped to homogenize group behavior, particularly benefiting students with less previous experience in the learning topic. However, it was noted that a small number of students still received low marks after the iVR experience, suggesting potential avenues for future research.Special thanks to Prof. Dr. Juan J. Effect of Fiber Orientation on the Fatigue Behavior of Steel Fiber-Reinforced Concrete Specimens by Performing Wedge Splitting Tests and Computed Tomography Scanning
This paper shows the relationship, in steel fiber-reinforced concrete, between fiber orientation and fatigue response through the combined use of computed tomography (CT), digital image processing (DIP) software and wedge splitting test (WST). The WST cubes were extracted from conventional 150 × 150× 600 concrete prisms and a groove and notch were carved on different faces in such a way that in half of the test specimens the fibers are oriented mostly perpendicular to the breaking surface and, in the other half, the fibers are mostly oriented parallel to the breaking surface. Fiber orientation was obtained using a CT device and DIP software from a miniprism extracted from the previously mentioned concrete prisms. The results show that there is a strong correlation between the crack-sewing fiber orientation on the one hand and fatigue life and crack opening rate per cycle on the other hand. Cubes with a higher percentage of fibers perpendicular to the crack surface (i.e., with a higher efficiency index) show a longer fatigue life and a lower crack opening rate per cycle, while cubes with a lower efficiency index show a shorter fatigue life and a higher crack opening rate per cycle. This investigation was supported by the following funder: Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación, PID2019-110928RB-C32, Spain

Effect of White Pomace Seasoning as a Natural Antioxidant for Chicken Products Packaged in Vacuum or Modified Atmosphere Conditions
Chicken breasts and burgers (88% breast and 12% backfat) were evaluated for physicochemical characteristics, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), and antioxidant capacity during storage in vacuum or atmosphere conditions for 18 days at 4 °C using the following two formulations: one without incorporating white pomace seasoning (WPS) and another with 3% WPS. The WPS was obtained from white grape skins, a byproduct resulting from the elaboration of white wine. The addition of the WSP decreased the L* values and increased the a* values, resulting in a significant turning toward brown tones in the chicken products. The addition of 3% of WSP led to higher values of ABTS and FRAP, regardless of the type of packaging. Both types of packaging significantly increased the levels of TBARS, although vacuum packaging proved more effective in protecting against lipid oxidation compared to modified atmosphere package (MAP). Additionally, the WSP improved the oxidative stability regarding the TBARS values. In conclusion, the WSP could be a viable alternative to chemical antioxidants and would lead to healthier and innovative chicken products. This research was funded by the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, the Spanish State Research Agency, and the European Regional Development Fund (Project PGC2018- 097113-B-I00
Effect of sight on the evaluation and acceptance of new products: Breaded nuggets with breadcrumbs and a new seasoning
The main aim of this study is to examine the influence of chicken nugget color and appearance on the overall acceptance rates and responses of a panel of consumers. Fifty blindfolded and fifty-two non-blindfolded panelists tasted the nuggets. They evaluated their Overall Liking (OL) and their perceptions of the sensory properties of chicken nuggets with no seasoning and chicken nuggets coated in breadcrumbs with 10% and 25% of a red pomace seasoning, a by-product of red winemaking. Just-About-Right (JAR) scales and Penalty Analysis (PA) were then used to determine the adequacy of the sensory attributes that the consumers had attributed to the products. Furthermore, purchase intention was also studied. The red pomace seasoning, regardless of the quantity that was used, darkened the nugget coatings. No effect of color on OL was observed when comparing the responses of the blindfolded and the non-blindfolded consumers. Their purchase intention decreased in proportion to the increased amount of seasoning added to the breadcrumbs. However, PA suggested that nuggets coated in breadcrumbs with 10% red pomace seasoning could after some reformulation be successfully marketed. This research was funded by the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, the Spanish State Research Agency, and the European Regional Development Fund (Project PGC2018-097113-B-I00)
The primary objectives of this study were to identify the mood profile of non-professional female volleyball players prior to competition, with the aim of replicating the "iceberg profile" described by Morgan, and to compare significant differences in mood—conceived as a multidimensional construct—based on the condition of competing as a home or away team and the outcome of the match. The study involved 70 female athletes in the cadet category from teams participating in the School Sports Programme in the province of Álava. The players completed the abbreviated version A of the Profile of Mood States (POMS), adapted into Spanish by Fuentes et al. (1995), both before and after their matches in a league competition. Results from the Mann-Whitney U test indicated that the mood profiles before competition were partially consistent with Morgan’s "iceberg profile," whether competing at home or away. Post-match analyses revealed that mood fluctuates based on the outcome of the game, with notable increases in mood disturbances following a loss. Statistically significant differences were found in the dimensions of tension (r= 0.42) and hostility (r= -0.51), showing medium to strong effect sizes. These findings offer valuable insights for the development of psychological intervention programmes aimed at athletes in formative years, providing coaches with enhanced understanding and tools to manage factors influencing players' mood.
