High-Performance Aramids with Intrinsic Bactericide Activity
Aramids, renowned for their high-performance attributes, find applications in critical fields such as protective equipment, aerospace components, and industrial filters. However, challenges arise in scenarios in which frequent washing is impractical, leading to bacterial proliferation, especially in textiles. This study outlines a straightforward and scalable method for preparing aramid-coated textiles and films endowed with inherent bactericidal activity, achieved by reacting parent aramids with vanillin. The functionalization of the aramids with bactericide moieties not only preserved the high-performance characteristics of commercial aramids but also improved their crucial mechanical properties. Tensile tests revealed an increase in Young’s modulus, up to 50% compared to commercial m-aramid, accompanied by thermal performance comparable to commercial m-aramids. The evaluation of these coated textiles as bactericidal materials demonstrated robust effectiveness with A parameters (antibacterial activity) of 4.31 for S. aureus and 3.44 for K. pneumoniae. Reusability tests (washing the textiles in harsh conditions) underscored that the bactericide-coated textiles maintain their performance over at least 5 cycles. Regarding practical applications, tests performed with reconstructed human epidermis affirmed the nonirritating nature of these materials to the skin. The distinctive qualities of these metal-free intrinsic bactericidal aramids position them as ideal candidates for scenarios demanding a synergy of high performance and bactericidal properties. Applications such as first responders’ textiles or filters stand to benefit significantly from these advanced materials. This work was supported by the Regional Government of Castilla y León (Junta de Castilla y León), the Ministry of Science and Innovation MICIN and the European Union NextGenerationEU/PRTR, and the Spanish Agencia Estatal de Investigación (State Research Agency). Manganese–rhodium nanoparticles: Adsorption on titanium oxide surfaces and catalyst for syngas reactions
Manganese–rhodium (Mn–Rh) nanoparticles have emerged as a promising candidate for catalytic applications in the production of syngas, a critical precursor for a wide range of industrial processes. This study employs a comprehensive, theoretical, and computational approach to investigate the structural and electronic properties of Mn–Rh nanoparticles, with a specific focus on their interaction with titanium oxide (TiO2) surfaces and their potential as catalysts for syngas reactions. The density functional theory calculations are employed to explore the adsorption behavior of Mn–Rh nanoparticles on TiO2 surfaces. By analyzing the adsorption energies, geometries, and electronic structure at the nanoscale interface, we provide valuable insights into the stability and reactivity of Mn–Rh nanoparticles when immobilized on TiO2 supports. Furthermore, the catalytic performance of Mn–Rh nanoparticles in syngas production is thoroughly examined. Through detailed reaction mechanism studies and kinetic analysis, we elucidate the role of Mn and Rh in promoting syngas generation via carbon dioxide reforming and partial oxidation reactions. The findings demonstrate the potential of Mn–Rh nanoparticles as efficient catalysts for these crucial syngas reactions. This research work not only enhances our understanding of the fundamental properties of Mn–Rh nanoparticles but also highlights their application as catalysts for sustainable and industrially significant syngas production. This work was funded by the European Union H2020 Program (Grant No. H2020-LC-SC3-2020-NZE-RES-CC-NEFERTITI-GA 101022202). Phenolic Composition, Antiradical, Antimicrobial, and Anti-Inflammatory Activities of Propolis Extracts from North East Spain
Antioxidant-related parameters and anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activities against Listeria monocytogenes were assessed in eight North East Spain poplar propolis samples. Propolis extracts (PEs) were obtained using 70% ethanol (PEE) and methanol (PME). Yield and total phenol compounds were higher in PEE. Phenolic acids were analyzed by a high-performance liquid chromatograph–diode array detector. Caffeic and ferulic acids were quantified in all PEE and PME. All samples contained p-coumaric acid (quantified in 6 PEE and in 3 PME). Ascorbic acid was detected in all propolis, but mainly quantified in PME (≤0.37 mg/g PE). Biological properties were tested on PEE. As for antiradical activities, trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC) [against 2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)•+], ranged between 578 and 4620 µmol trolox/g, 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) (against DPPH free radical), between 0.049 and 0.094 mg/mL, antioxidant activity against hydroxyl (•OH) radical (AOA), between 0.04 and 11.01 mmol uric acid/g, and oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) against peroxyl (ROO•) radical between 122 and 3282 µmol trolox/g. Results of TEAC, AOA, and ORAC were significantly correlated. IC50 anti-inflammatory activity ranged from 1.08 to 6.19 mg/mL. Propolis showed higher inhibitory activity against L. monocytogenes CECT934 and L. monocytogenes CP101 by agar well diffusion (P < .05) (10.5 and 10.2 mm, respectively) than against L. monocytogenes CP102 (7.0 mm). Data of this research show that North East Spain propolis may be of interest for pharmaceutical and food industry use
