Validation of ActiGraph and Fitbit in the assessment of energy expenditure in Huntington's disease
Background: Consumer and research activity monitors have become popular because of their ability to quantify
energy expenditure (EE) in free-living conditions. However, the accuracy of activity trackers in determining EE in
people with Huntington’s Disease (HD) is unknown.
Research question:
Can the ActiGraph wGT3X-B or the Fitbit Charge 4 accurately measure energy expenditure during physical
activity, in people with HD compared to Indirect Calorimetry (IC) (Medisoft Ergo Card)?
Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional, observational study with fourteen participants with mild-moderate HD
(mean age 55.7 ± 11.4 years). All participants wore an ActiGraph and Fitbit during an incremental test, running
on a treadmill at 3.2 km/h and 5.2 km/h for three minutes at each speed. We analysed and compared the accuracy of EE estimates obtained by Fitbit and ActiGraph against the EE estimates obtained by a metabolic cart,
using with Intra-class correlation (ICC), Bland-Altman analysis and correlation tests.
Results: A significant correlation and a moderate reliability was found between ActiGraph and IC for the incremental test (r = 0.667)(ICC=0.633). There was a significant correlation between Fitbit and IC during the incremental test (r = 0.701), but the reliability was poor at all tested speeds in the treadmill walk. Fitbit
significantly overestimated EE, and ActiGraph underestimated EE compared to IC, but ActiGraph estimates were
more accurate than Fitbit in all tests.
Significance: Compared to IC, Fitbit Charge 4 and ActiGraph wGT3X-BT have reduced accuracy in estimating EE
at slower walking speeds. These findings highlight the need for population-specific algorithms and validation of
activity trackers. The research leading to these results has received funding from “la Caixa” Foundation and Caja de Burgos Foundation, under agreement LCF/PR/PR18/51130008"
Ensemble methods and semi-supervised learning for information fusion: A review and future research directions
Advances over the past decade at the intersection of information fusion methods and Semi-Supervised Learning (SSL) are investigated in this paper that grapple with challenges related to limited labelled data. To do so, a bibliographic review of papers published since 2013 is presented, in which ensemble methods are combined with new machine learning algorithms. A total of 128 new proposals using SSL algorithms for ensemble construction are identified and classified. All the methods are categorised by approach, ensemble type, and base classifier. Experimental protocols, pre-processing, dataset usage, unlabelled ratios, and statistical tests are also assessed, underlining the major trends, and some shortcomings of particular studies. It is evident from this literature review that foundational algorithms such as self-training and co-training are influencing current developments, and that innovative ensemble techniques are continuing to emerge. Additionally, valuable guidelines are identified in the review for improving research into intrinsically semi-supervised and unsupervised pre-processing methods, especially for regression tasks. This work was supported through the Junta de Castilla y León (JCyL) (regional goverment) under project BU055P20 (JCyL/FEDER, UE), the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation under project PID2020-119894GB-I00 co-financed through European Union FEDER funds, and project TED2021-129485B-C43 funded by MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033 and the European Union NextGenerationEU/PRTR.
The Common European Framework of Reference for Language Teaching (CEFR), the Complementary Volume to the CEFR (VCMCER) and the Curricular Plan of the Instituto Cervantes (PCIC) all consider the language learner as a social agent who must strive to learn a foreign language and to achieve communicative competence. The latter, which refers not only to the ability to produce and recognise grammatically correct utterances, but also to appreciate and differentiate in what context and linguistic situations they can be expressed, includes the lexical-semantic component, the focus of this research. Thus, attention is focused on the inclusion of its teaching, both implicitly and explicitly in the classroom, and on working with lexical units and their frequent combinations, lexical and grammatical collocations, fundamentally in the initial levels of Spanish as a Foreign Language (ELE)
