Effects of temperature and moisture fluctuations for suitable use of raw-crushed wind-turbine blade in concrete
Raw-crushed wind-turbine blade (RCWTB), a waste from the recycling of wind-turbine blades, is used as a raw material in concrete in this research. It contains not only fiberglass-composite fibers that bridge the cementitious matrix but also polyurethane and balsa-wood particles. Therefore, concrete containing RCWTB can be notably affected by moisture and temperature fluctuations and by exposure to high temperatures. In this research, the performance of five concrete mixes with 0.0%, 1.5%, 3.0%, 4.5%, and 6.0% RCWTB, respectively, is studied under moist/dry, alternating-sign-temperature-shock, and high-temperature-shock tests. Two damage mechanisms of RCWTB within concrete were found through these tests: on the one hand, micro-cracking of the cementitious matrix, which was verified by microscopic analyses and was dependent on concrete porosity; on the other, damage and degradation of the RCWTB components, as the polyurethane melted, and the balsa-wood particles burned. Both phenomena led to larger remaining-strain levels and reduced concrete compressive strength by up to 25% under temperature and humidity variations, although the bridging effect of the fiberglass-composite fibers was effective when adding RCWTB amounts higher than 3.0%. The compressive-strength loss after the high-temperature-shock test increased with the RCWTB content, reaching maximum values of 8% after an exposure time of 7 days. Statistical analyses revealed that effect of the RCA amount in the concrete was conditioned by the exposure times in all the tests. The accurate definition of those times is therefore key to set an RCWTB content in concrete that ensures its suitable behavior under the environmental conditions analyzed.Open Access funding provided thanks to the CRUE-CSIC agreement with Springer Nature.
In the face of increasingly polarized societies, evidence shows how hate speech towards the different is proliferating alarmingly, causing greater social disparities. This often influences the social inclusion of young people with diverse cultural influences by presenting assimilation as the first option without adopting a critical perspective. The education system must act in this sense by addressing cultural diversity in the classroom from approaches that allow the formation of students and enable meaningful learning. Culturally responsive education (CRE) contributes to an adequate manage-ment of this diversity with variants regarding its conceptualization and development that deserve to be analyzed from different educational and social spheres. This article uses a critical review and discourse analysis method to observe the evolution of CRE from the perspective of teachers and students. Few studies have explored a discourse analysis of CRE from methodologies of Funds of knowledge (FoK) with pedagogies within the classroom in the role of the teacher and Funds of identity (FoI) of the student. Thus, this study aims to analyze the pedagogical dimension of the teacher within the classroom from FoK and from the figure of the students and their learning, FdI are contemplated. This analysis suggests an educational reinterpretation of the third space that allows a contribution to the work of the CRE in the classroom. Finally, we point out some challenges of CRE regarding its terminology, implementation, and future lines of work
The EU Taxonomy, sustainability reporting and financial institutions: understanding the elements driving regulatory uncertainty
The EU Taxonomy Regulation relies on sustainability reporting to channel financial resources to sustainable activities. Financial institutions are key actors in the Taxonomy setting because they operate as financial intermediaries and have a dual role as both users and preparers of sustainability information. This paper investigates the perceived uncertainty that characterizes the sustainability reporting regulatory environment of a particular type of financial institution, banks, to identify the elements that generate that perception. Drawing on literature on regulatory uncertainty, this paper conducts a case study of the Spanish banking industry informed by interviews and complemented by other data sources. The analysis unveils two significant elements driving regulatory uncertainty: the Taxonomy’s lack of clarity regarding the operationalization of its measures and rules and the timeline and oversight of its implementation. The study also documents that the Taxonomy induces uncertainty in the non-regulatory environment due to its unpredictable impact on banks’ reputation and market competition, as well as to the changes it provokes in banks’ internal structures and processes to address regulatory requirements. As the perception of regulatory uncertainty represents an impediment to compliance, understanding the elements giving rise to it can help to mitigate such perception and facilitate the fulfillment of regulatory demands. This investigation offers implications for policy and practice to facilitate the production of the sustainability information banks must disclose according to the EU Taxonomy, particularly the green asset ratio.Nicolas Garcia-Torea and Mercedes Luque-Vílchez acknowledge the financial support provided by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation (TED2021-129520B-I00), Agencia Nacional de Investigación (PID2021-122389OB-I00) and Junta de Castilla y León (BU069P20 y BU029P23)
Mechanical properties of concrete mixes with Selectively Crushed Wind Turbine Blade: Comparison with Raw-Crushing
The glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) materials of wind turbine blades can be recovered and recycled by crushing, thereby solving one of the most perplexing problems facing the wind energy sector. This process yields selectively crushed wind turbine blade (SCWTB), a novel waste that is almost exclusively composed of GFRP composite fibers that can be revalued in terms of their use as a raw material in concrete production. In this research, the fresh and mechanical performance of concrete made with 1.5%, 3.0%, 4.5%, and 6.0% SCWTB is studied. Once incorporated into concrete mixes, SCWTB waste slightly reduced slumps due to the large specific surface area of the fibers, and the stitching effect of the fibers on mechanical behavior was generally adequate, as scanning electron microscopy demonstrated good fiber adhesion within the cementitious matrix. Thus, despite the increase in the content of water and plasticizers when adding this waste to preserve workability, the compressive strength only decreased in the long term with the addition of 6.0% SCWTB, a value of 45 MPa always being reached at 28 days; Poisson’s coefficient remained constant from 3.0% SCWTB; splitting tensile strength was maintained at around 4.7 MPa up to additions of 3.0% SCWTB; and the flexural strength of mixes containing 6.0% and 1.5% SCWTB was statistically equal, with a value near 6.1 MPa. Furthermore, all mechanical properties of the concrete except for flexural strength were improved with additions of SCWTB compared to raw crushed wind turbine blade, which apart from GFRP composite fibers contains approximately spherical polymer and balsa wood particles. Flexural strength was conditioned by the proportion of fibers, their dimensions, and their strength, which were almost identical for both waste types. SCWTB would be preferable for applications in which compression stresses predominate. This research work was supported by MICIU, AEI, EU, ERDF and NextGenerationEU/PRTR [grant numbers PID2020-113837RB-I00; 10.13039/501100011033; PID2023-146642OB-I00; TED2021-129715B-I00]; the Junta de Castilla y León (Regional Government) and ERDF [grant number UIC-231; BU033P23]; and, finally, the University of Burgos [grant number SUCONS, Y135.GI

“What Made Me Change”: Transformative Experiences in the Jihadist Radicalization Process
Disentangling the roots of radicalization leading to violence is a worldwidechallenge. Unfortunately, empirical data are scarce. Through fieldwork con-ducting interviews with Muslim persons deprived of liberty (PDL) in Spanishprisons, this research examines transformative experiences that may haveinfluenced radicalization leading to violence from the 3N model and the life-course perspective lenses. PDL because of jihadist terrorism (n = 30), com-mon criminals who carry out proselytizing work (n = 22), and non-radicals(control group, n = 64) were asked about the turning point in their lives. Theirresponses were coded into exclusive thematic categories following an induc-tive-deductive mixed approach. Jihadists and proselytizers identified experi-ences linking their personal identity to religion—ideological ties—asa transformative point that provided them purpose and sparked the desirefor leaving their criminal lifestyle behind. Also, proselytizers referred tofamily-related experiences—familial ties—as a turning point which alsoprompted them to criminal desistance, whereas this was not mentioned byjihadists. All groups had in common the experience of incarceration asa major turning point and a moderate level of self-reported religiosity.Overall, these findings contribute to the understanding and prevention ofjihadist radicalization. This work was funded by the I+D+i projects “What I learned in prison. FACT: A pilot study of process-based therapy to promote occupational well-being
The current study tests the effects of a brief intervention program based on the contextual therapies (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Functional Analytic Psychotherapy) to enhance the well-being and interpersonal relationships in the workplace. This research represents a unified model (FACT) based on functional contextualism. As pilot study, we present the application with two workers with relational and emotional problems between them. We use a single-case design measuring pre, post and follow-up after six months. The assessment was made with various questionnaires and direct measurement of clinically relevant behaviors. The total intervention was carried out individually for a month and a half. The results revealed improvements in both employees about their personal and professional relationships, and also appearing generalisation with improvements in other areas (intimacy, personal relationships, family, friends). The study has implications by highlighting the importance of behavioral analysis of problems in work relationships, and by showing that the integration of contextual therapies can produce rapid results in non-clinical situations. Lastly, the in-depth insight into the change processes triggered by the interventions with FACT as a way to include this approach based on evidence philosophy applied in the workplace
This study is based on the experience of lvorian students of
Spanish as a Foreign. Language at the University of Cocody who
read two excerpts from the novel La bastarda (2016), by the
Equatorial Guinean writer Trifonia Melibea Obono. Reading the
texts triggered unique responses from the students regarding the
concept of motherhood in Africa. The students compared the
literary representations in the excerpts with their own experiences
and ideas in assigned compositions. We analyzed the 36
compositions written by the students to examine how they
conceive of the mother figure. Basing our study on Homi K.
Bhabha's idea of hybridity as "the interstitial passage between fixed
identifications [that] opens the possibility of a cultural hybridity
that entertains difference without an assumed or imposed
hierarchy" (6), we explore the testimonial nuances around the
notion of motherhood in Africa and affirm the diversity of cultures
in the classroom that challenge fixed and dominant preconceptions
Adenocarcinoma on retrorectal cystic hamartoma: An illustrative image for a very rare diagnosis
Retrorectal cystic hamartoma (also known as tailgut cyst) is a congenital lesion that originates from debris from the embryonic caudal intestine. Incidentally diagnosed in more than half of cases, the treatment of choice is surgical resection. It is a very rare pathology whose oncological transformation constitutes a true pathological rarity
