Reusable and effective polyacrylic membranes for mecoprop and bentazon extractions
This study introduces reusable polyacrylic membranes, fabricated from commercially available monomers (1-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone and methylmethacrylate), as a promising approach for pesticide extraction. These membranes effectively remove the commonly used herbicides mecoprop (RE ≈ 99%) and bentazon (RE ≈ 95%) at low concentrations, which pose water contamination risks due to their water-soluble properties and leaf-level sorption. The membranes exhibit excellent manageability and resistance, allowing for safe handling without personal protective equipment. Additionally, the material is environmentally friendly and can be washed and reused for at least 4 cycles without a significant decrease in performance. Characterization techniques, including NMR, TGA, DSC, mechanical testing, N2 adsorption, and FTIR analysis, were used to investigate properties and assess the influence of the polymeric composition. The study focused on examining the lateral charged aminoethyl groups, which play a crucial role in sorbent-sorbate interactions. Sorption kinetics, isotherms, and permeation studies provided insights into the removal mechanism, efficiency, and permeability coefficients, revealing hydrophobic–hydrophobic interactions between the pesticides and the polymer. Molecular dynamics simulations revealed a scorpion-like conformation of the macromolecular chains surrounding the pesticides. These findings support the hydrophobic nature of the extraction mechanism and highlight the significant role of charged aminoethyl groups in facilitating this process. We gratefully acknowledge the financial support provided by all funders. Addressing data scarcity in protein fitness landscape analysis: A study on semi-supervised and deep transfer learning techniques
This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of deep transfer learning methods, supervised methods, and semi-supervised methods in the context of protein fitness prediction, with a focus on small datasets. The analysis includes the exploration of the combination of different data sources to enhance the performance of the models. While deep learning and deep transfer learning methods have shown remarkable performance in situations with abundant data, this study aims to address the more realistic scenario faced by wet lab researchers, where labeled data is often limited.
The novelty of this work lies in its examination of deep transfer learning in the context of small datasets and its consideration of semi-supervised methods and multi-view strategies. While previous research has extensively explored deep transfer learning in large dataset scenarios, little attention has been given to its efficacy in small dataset settings or its comparison with semi-supervised approaches.
Our findings suggest that deep transfer learning, exemplified by ProteinBERT, shows promising performance in this context compared to the rest of the methods across various evaluation metrics, not only in small dataset contexts but also in large dataset scenarios. This highlights the robustness and versatility of deep transfer learning in protein fitness prediction tasks, even with limited labeled data.
The results of this study shed light on the potential of deep transfer learning as a state-of-the-art approach in the field of protein fitness prediction. By leveraging pre-trained models and fine-tuning them on small datasets, researchers can achieve competitive performance surpassing traditional supervised and semi-supervised methods. These findings provide valuable insights for wet lab researchers who face the challenge of limited labeled data, enabling them to make informed decisions when selecting the most effective methodology for their specific protein fitness prediction tasks.
Additionally, the study investigated the combination of two different sources of information (encodings) through our enhanced semi-supervised methods, yielding noteworthy results improving their base model and providing valuable insights for further research.
The presented analysis contributes to a better understanding of the capabilities and limitations of different learning approaches in small dataset scenarios, ultimately aiding in the development of improved protein fitness prediction methods. This work is supported by the Junta de Castilla Leon, Spain under project BU055P20 (JCyL/FEDER, UE), and the Ministry of Science and Innovation, Spain under project PID2020- 119894 GB-I00 co-financed through European Union FEDER funds. Simultaneous determination of 4-ethylphenol and 4-ethylguaicol on C60 modified dual screen-printed electrochemical sensors
4-ethylphenol and 4-ethylguaicol levels in wine are associated to organoleptic defects that cause consumer rejection accompanied by significant economic losses for producers. Thus, electrochemical sensors based on screen-printed carbon electrodes (SPCEs) modified with activated fullerene C60 (AC60) have been developed for the analysis of both phenols by direct headspace amperometric measurements. Upon optimization of the experimental variables affecting the sensors performance, the AC60/SPCE sensors presented linearity ranges from 9.9 to 65.4 μg/L and from 19.6 to 107.1 μg/L for 4-ethylphenol and 4-ethylguaicol, respectively. The achieved detection capacities were 10.3 μg/L (4-ethylphenol) and 19.6 μg/L (4-ethylguaicol), with a reproducibility of 6.3 % and 9.1 % (n = 3), respectively. In addition, dual-working AC60/SPCE devices were developed for the simultaneous analysis of both phenols using different working potentials for each electrode. The dual systems were successfully applied in the analysis of different spiked wine samples, obtaining good recoveries ranging from 94 to 108 %.Authors would like to acknowledge funding from Agencia Estatal de Investigación/Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (PID2020-117095RB-I00/AEI/10.13039/501100011033)
Field-configuring events and the failure to standardise accounting for carbon emissions
Since the withdrawal of IFRIC 3 in 2005, there has been a regulatory freeze in accounting for emission rights that contrasts with the international momentum of climate-related financial disclosures. This paper explores how different narratives and institutional dynamics explain the failure to produce guidance on accounting for emission rights.
Design/methodology/approach
This paper mobilises the notion of field-configuring events to examine a sequence of six events between 2003 and 2016, including four public consultations and two dialogues between standard setters. The paper presents a qualitative analysis of documents produced in this space that investigates how different practices and narratives configured the field's positions, agenda, and meaning systems.
Findings
Accounting for emission rights was gradually decoupled from climate change and carbon markets, relegated to the research pipeline, and forgotten. The obstacles that the IASB and EFRAG found in presenting themselves as central in the recurring events, the excess of representations, and the increasingly technical and abstract debates eroded the 2003 momentum for regulation, making the different initiatives to revitalise the project vulnerable and open to scrutiny. Lukes (2021) refers to nondecision-making to express that some issues are suffocated before they are expressed.
Originality/value
The regulation of accounting for emission rights, an area that has received scant attention in the literature, provides some insights into the different narrative mechanisms that, materialising in specific times and spaces, draw regulatory attention to particular accounting issues, which are problematised and, eventually, forgotten. This study also illustrates that identifying interests is problematic as actors shift from alternative positions over a long period. The case examined also raises some doubts about the previous effectiveness of international standard setters in dealing with matters of connectivity between the environment and finance, as is the case for accounting for emissions rights.Sophie Giordano-Spring and Géraldine Rivière-Giordano are grateful for the financial support by the Autorités des Normes Comptables and the French National Research Agency through the program “Investments for the Future” under reference number ANR-10-LabX-11-01.
