Effectiveness of the NeuronUp program in improving the cognitive performance in older adults

    No full text
Background: The application of new technologies for cognitive stimulation has increased in recent years, allowing interdisciplinary teams to work more efficiently, minimizing the costs and time of analysis, management, and design of activities, and improving the care of older adults. Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of a cognitive intervention carried out using a web platform (NeuronUp) in improving mild cognitive decline (orientation, reading, memory, and language) in institutionalized older adults as compared to traditional interventions using pencil and paper. Methods: The experimental design was applied on two randomly allocated participant groups. One group received the intervention through NeuronUp (55 participants), and the other group received it with pencil and paper (55 participants). For the user evaluation, the Abbreviated Barcelona Test (PIEN-TB), which was administered before and after the intervention, was used. Analyses of variance, covariance, multivariate analysis of variance, and covariance were performed on two groups (control and experimental) twice (pre- and post-intervention). Each cognitive measure was used as a dependent variable; the group was the fixed factor, and the pre-test scores and the educational levels were the covariates. Results: Statistically significant differences were observed in all categories except for language. The NeuronUp program improved three of the four cognitive skills evaluated: orientation (F(3106) = 12.747, p = .001, d = 0.69) and reading (F(3106) = 9.195, p = .003, d = 0.59) with moderate effect sizes, and memory (F(3106) = 58.911, p = .001, d = 1.49) with a strong effect size. Conclusion: The NeuronUp program is effective in improving cognitive processes in older individuals; furthermore, implementing treatments with new technologies guided by specialized professionals may be beneficial. This research was funded by the Regional Government of Castilla y León (Junta de Castilla y León), project number BU043G24

Effect of white wine pomace product on the integrity of the intestinal barrier, transcriptomic modulation in 3D SH-SY5Y neuronal cells and incorporation as a functional ingredient

    No full text

Cultural Participation as a Pathway to Social Inclusion: A Systematic Review and Youth Perspectives on Disability and Engagement

    No full text
Social inclusion, particularly in the cultural domain, is a fundamental pillar for ensuring the full participation of all individuals in community life, fostering equity, well-being, and the recognition of diversity. This article has two objectives. Firstly, it aims to conduct a systematic review to diagnose the factors that exclude vulnerable groups from cultural access. Secondly, the aim is to understand how a group of young people with disabilities perceive the role of culture as a tool for social and labour inclusion. In October 2023, a systematic review was conducted in the Web of Science and Scopus electronic databases. A total of 37 articles were included in the review and classified into the following five areas of interest. The categories were as follows: (1) the relationship between cultural participation and physical and emotional well-being; (2) universal accessibility as a right to guarantee equitable access to culture; (3) the ability of people with disabilities to participate in culture; (4) the role of cultural policies as facilitators or barriers to inclusion; and (5) participation in contexts of cultural diversity as a means of social integration. These categories guided discussions with two focus groups comprising 15 young people. The positive impact of cultural participation, especially in its social dimension, was highlighted. The data point to the value of technology as a facilitator of access to culture, particularly for young people. Policies should focus on diverse cultural expressions and promote cognitive accessibility. This study was approved by the Bioethics Committee of the University of Burgos (protocol number IO 22/2024, approval date: 16 April 2024) in accordance with the Declaration of Helsinki guidelines

Deformability and energy absorption of concrete made with selectively crushed wind-turbine blade

    No full text
The crushing of the glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) previously separated from the other wind-turbine-blade materials produces a waste with minimum contents of deformable particles of balsa wood and polymers, being mainly composed of GFRP-composite fibers. This residue is named selectively crushed wind-turbine blade (SCWTB). This research evaluates the impact of adding up to 6.0% by volume of SCWTB on the deformability, load-bearing capacity and energy absorption of concrete subjected to compression, bending, and indirect-tensile stresses. SCWTB increased the failure strain of concrete in the direction parallel to a compression load, although it led the failure and fracture strains to match. However, the strain increase from failure to fracture was 2000–3000 µε in the transverse direction to loading, so concrete with SCWTB was load-bearing after failure. GFRP-composite fibers’ stitching effect was more noticeable under bending stresses. Thus, 1.5% vol. and 6.0% vol. SCWTB resulted in almost the same bending failure stress in concrete, around 6.1–6.2 MPa, and contents from 3.0 and 6.0% vol. SCWTB provided load-bearing capacity in simple and notched-specimen bending, respectively. In addition, the low content of deformable particles in SCWTB increased the deflection increment from failure to fracture in bending, although the presence of such particles augmented energy absorption. No SCWTB content provided load-bearing capacity under indirect-tensile stresses, although it did increase pre-failure deformability. In general, the energy absorbed by concrete increased by up to 43% when adding SCWTB, the use of up to 6.0% of this waste being recommended to increase the ductility of concrete. This research work was supported by the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities MICIU, AEI, EU, ERDF and NextGenerationEU/PRTR [grant numbers PID2023-146642OB-I00; https://doi.org/10.13039/ 501100011033; TED2021-129715B-I00]; the Junta de Castilla y León (Regional Government) and ERDF [grant number UIC231; BU033P23]; and, finally, the University of Burgos [grant number SUCONS, Y135.GI]

The delict of furtum in specificatio and similar legal constructs

    No full text
This paper examines a very particular case of theft (furtum) that occurs when someone, in bad faith—that is maliciously, transforms it into a new and different thing (nova species), regardless of whether this is reversible or irreversible, in order to acquire ownership by means of what is known as the original way of acquiring ownership called specificatio. For the prosecution of such illicit acts, the owner of the stolen material was granted the actio furti and the condictio ex causa furtiva. In addition, given their similarities, the cases of accession between movable things are also studied, especially pictura, textura and scriptura, as the commission of furtum and its prosecution with the same procedural means are feasible

Raw Network Traffic Captures for IoT Cyberattack Detection in Fog Computing Environments [Dataset]

    No full text
These files consist of raw network packet captures (PCAP format) obtained from controlled laboratory experiments that emulate benign and malicious Internet of Things (IoT) traffic in fog computing environments. The experiments involved resource-constrained edge devices, specifically a Raspberry Pi 4 and a Jetson Nano. Malicious traffic corresponds to Denial-of-Service (DoS) attacks executed from the Jetson Nano against the Raspberry Pi 4 within an isolated local network, while benign traffic reflects typical IoT device behavior, including alert generation, DNS requests, and telemetry or device-management communications (e.g., MQTT updates). All captures were performed under reproducible laboratory conditions and are intended to support research on intrusion detection, IoT network behavior analysis, and the development and training of cybersecurity attack detection models. This work was carried out under the project *AI4SECIoT – Artificial Intelligence for Securing IoT Devices*, funded by the Instituto Nacional de Ciberseguridad (INCIBE) within the framework of the *Plan de Recuperación, Transformación y Resiliencia*, financed by the European Union (Next Generation EU)
