    Suitability of concrete produced with high contents of crushed wind-turbine blade

These wind-turbine blades must be recycled, so their suitability to be added into concrete mixes as fibers is studied. Thus, a less- polluting fiber-reinforced concrete can be achieved, maintaining its mechanical behavior. To recycle numerous wind-turbine blades at an adequate rate, large amounts of waste need to be added into concrete. This study aims to find out the suitability of adding high amounts of this waste material (0% vol., 5% vol., and 10% vol.). Testing yielded a slight decrease in fresh density and a higher occluded air content, yet largely maintaining its suitability for structural use according to the compressive strength.     UV/Vis absorption spectroelectrochemistry is a very promising analytical technique due to the complementary information that is simultaneously obtained from electrochemistry and spectroscopy. In this work, this technique is used in a parallel configuration to study the oxidation of folic acid in alkaline medium. Herein, UV/Vis absorption spectroelectrochemistry has been used to detect both the oxidation products and the folic acid consumed at the electrode/solution interface, allowing us to develop an analytical protocol to quantify vitamin B9 in pharmaceutical tablets. Linear ranges of three orders of magnitude have been achieved in basic medium (pH = 12.9), obtaining high repeatability and low detection limits. The spectroelectrochemical determination of folic acid in pharmaceutical tablets at alkaline pH values is particularly interesting because of the changes that occur in the optical signal during the electrochemical oxidation of FA, providing results with very good figures of merit and demonstrating the utility and versatility of this hyphenated technique, UV/Vis absorption spectroelectrochemistry.Open Access funding provided thanks to the CRUE-CSIC agreement with Springer Nature.     Durability in abrasion terms of a full-scale porous bituminous mixture manufactured with ladle furnace slag

    Comunicación oral presentada en: Sixth International Conference on Sustainable Construction Materials and Technologies (SCMT6) 2024, durante los días 9-13 de junio en Lyon (Francia).A research experience on the construction of a pilot road section with a porous asphalt mixture incorporating Ladle Furnace Slag (LFS) as fine aggregate in its composition is reported. The pilot section consisted of overlaying this mixture on existing bituminous pavement and was intended to simulate a real application of this sustainable construction material. Along with the paving, quality control was conducted to ensure that this mixture complied with the requirements of the current regulations for its use. This quality control included a durabilityperformance study. Thus, water-sensitivity, accelerated-aging and frost-exposure tests from an abrasion-resistance approach were conducted on Marshall specimens compacted with 50 blows per face. The values obtained were compared with the abrasion resistance of unaged specimens.     Reactor configuration for subcritical water extraction of pectin-derived compounds from onion peel wastes: a comparative study

    Póster presentado en: 20th European Meeting on Supercritical Fluids (EMSF) 2024, celebrado durante los días 26-29 de mayo en Maribor (Eslovenia).The increasing interest of pectin derived compounds as functional additives in the pharmaceutical and food industries demands new sources and eco-friendly extraction approaches. In this regard, onion peel wastes (OPW) hold great potential, with over 450,000 tons of OPW being discarded annually [1], despite their remarkable pectin content. Pectins are commonly extracted acid hydrolysis (pH 2, >85 °C), that yield mainly the HG domain, due to complete hydrolysis of the branched domains or enzymatic hydrolysis, which is time consuming, but yields branched pectin rich in RG-I and RG-II domains. As an alternative to the conventional process for producing pectin derived compounds (PDC), hydrothermal hydrolysis based on subcritical water (SubW) is emerging as an eco-friendly technique. SubW refers to water at temperatures ranging from 100 °C (boiling temperature) to 374 °C (critical temperature), which remains in a liquid state due to the application of pressure. SubW can facilitate the extraction of pectin from natural matrices, and by controlling the operational parameters, pectin can be tailored into smaller units with varying degrees of polymerization to produce PDC. However, in practice, accurate control of experimental conditions has emerged as the primary challenge of the SubW extraction process, which can lead to the formation of undesired degradation products, and uncontrolled molecular weight reduction of the pectin.Agencia Estatal de Investigación (Spain), projects PID2020-116716RJ-I00, TED2021-129311B-I00 and TED2021-129837B-C4

    En el aprendizaje automático, especialmente en biología y genómica, los conjuntos de datos son llamados anchos, Los datos anchos contienen una gran cantidad de características pero pocas instancias. Esta alta dimensionalidad dificulta el aprendizaje de los modelos de aprendizaje, causando sobreajuste y sesgos. Para abordar estos problemas, las técnicas de preprocesamiento de datos son fundamentales. Esta tesis explora diversas estrategias de preprocesamiento, como la selección y reducción de características, y el remuestreo para equilibrar las clases. Además de técnicas semi-supervisadas. A través de tres artículos, se comparan diferentes estrategias de preprocesado y, en el campo de la selección de características en aprendizaje semi-supervisado y se propone una nueva taxonomía de algoritmos. Los resultados obtenidos demuestran la importancia de combinar adecuadamente las técnicas de preprocesamiento para obtener modelos más robustos y generales.     Las Entidades No Lucrativas (ENLs) llevan existiendo desde hace décadas en nuestra sociedad, como una herramienta para dar respuesta a las necesidades de las personas más desfavorecidas o de las causas solidarias que afectan a nuestro entorno, tanto el más cercano como el más lejano. Estas ENLs han seguido tradicionalmente unos métodos y estrategias para atraer a nuevos donantes que hoy en día están resultando en gran parte ineficientes. Es por esto que, con la irrupción de las nuevas tecnologías y de las redes sociales en nuestro día a día las ENLs no pueden quedarse atrás en la aplicación y el aprovechamiento de las ventajas de estas para lograr sus objetivos, atrayendo donantes que puedan apoyar las causas solidarias que persiguen. En el trabajo que presentamos se abordarán los determinantes alrededor de las donaciones y cómo influyen sobre estas las redes sociales y los ‘influencers’, en primer lugar, con una revisión de algunos estudios que tratan sobre ello y, a continuación, se realizará una investigación propia mediante una encuesta. Finalmente, con los resultados obtenidos y tras la revisión necesaria, se extraerán las conclusiones pertinentes y se realizarán recomendaciones de utilidad.Non-Profit Organisations (NPOs) have existed for decades in our society, as a tool to respond to the needs of the most disadvantaged people or solidarity causes that affect our environment, both near and far. These NLAs have traditionally followed methods and strategies to attract new donors that are nowadays proving to be largely inefficient. This is why, with the irruption of new technologies and social media in our daily lives, NNAs cannot be left behind in the application and use of the advantages of these for their cause, attracting donors who can support the charitable causes they pursue. In this paper, we will address the determinants of donations and how they are influenced by social media and influencers, first with a review of some studies that deal with it, and then we will carry out our own research through a survey. Finally, with the results obtained and after the necessary review, the relevant conclusions will be drawn and useful recommendations will be made

    A Computer Vision‐Based Methodology to Estimate Fruit Colour Diversity in Ornamental Pepper (Capsicum spp.)

    Fruit colour diversity within different ripening stages confers ornamental value for pepper plants. Using images can be helpful in analysing the fruit colour-related genetic diversity and enable selecting accessions for ornamental purposes by avoiding subjectiveness. This study aimed to evaluate the phenotypic diversity among accessions of ornamental pepper using image processing techniques to identify fruit colours. Photos from 40 fruits from each of 12 accessions were captured by a camera from a smartphone. Separate channels and colour indices were extracted from the images to analyse the accessions using both dendrogram and principal components analysis. Dendrogram analysis allowed separating accessions with predominance of dark fruits from those whose fruits showed lighter and more vivid colours, with a cophenetic correlation coefficient of 0.811. The VARI and NGRDI vegetation indices were efficient in discriminating fruits with a predominance of green colour, and the BGI could be used to discriminate accessions with predominantly reddish-brown fruits. The proposed method can be used in small-scale breeding programs for accurately assessing the development of varieties regarding their fruit colour diversity.We would like to acknowledge the financial support provided by theNational Council for Scientific and Technological Development–CNPQ(408444/2021-5).
