Integrating sustainability information into mainstream reporting

    No full text

Electric arc furnace slag in substitution of quartz for surface treatment of concrete paving slabs

    No full text
Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) slag, a by-product of the steelmaking industry, also serves as a highquality aggregate material for structural concrete production. In this research, its use is proposed as a Dry-Shake Hardener (DSH), in substitution of quartz, in concrete paving top coatings. Three concrete paving slab kinds were produced using EAF: one without fibers, another with metallic fibers; and the third with synthetic fibers. Half of each slab was coated with a classical cementquartz mix and the other half with a novel cement-slag mix. After four years of outdoor aging at the city of Burgos, Spain, the slabs were visually inspected and no significant differences were found between the two coated materials. Impact, skid, and abrasion resistance tests were carried out and showed similar results for both types of coating courses. The result of both the short and long-term water absorption test results indicated, firstly, no short-term water absorption in both cases and, secondly, lower long-term water absorption in the quartz-cement mix. Finally, observation of the oil stain resistance tests on the top coatings led to the conclusion that the cleaning ability is very good. Analyzing all the results, it may be concluded that a new application for EAF slag have been found, it is a suitable material for use as a DSH for coating concrete paving slabs. The authors wish to express their gratitude to the following funding entities MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033, “ERDF A way of making Europe”; the “European Union”, NextGeneration EU/PRTR [PID2020-113837RB-I00; PID2021-124203OB-I00 and TED2021-129715B–I00]; the Junta de Castilla y León (Regional Government) and ERDF [UIC-231, BU11917]; the Basque Government [IT1619-22 SAREN research group]; and Burgos University [Y135.GI]

    No full text
Background Significant consequences of COVID-19 within academic/professional life are, at the psychological level, related to worry, tension, stress; coping strategies and lifestyle changes. This study describes the process of design and validation of an inventory (QPIC), which aims to assess the psychological impact that a situation of confinement can produce among university students and teachers. Methods Design of the instrument and psychometric tests. A sample of 862 students and 229 professors affiliated to Spanish and Colombian universities was used. Data were collected in April 2020 with the request of the favourable Bioethics Committee IR/2020. Results Six experts carried out the content validation. A confirmatory factor analysis of the theoretical dimensions proposed for the scales was performed and the internal consistency of each of the three initial scales was confirmed (0.866, 0.813 and 0.834). Conclusion A rigorous and reliable instrument is achieved, consisting of two final scales: (a) Worry, tension and stress scale (b) Coping scale, which helps to measure individual psychological effects in housebound situations. It is an instrument designed, constructed ad hoc to assess the impact of confinement and subjected to validation. The factor structure and reliability of the instrument are examined and good psychometric properties are obtained. The application of this inventory will make it possible to assess the impact on people’s mental health during a period of confinement

    Gold‐Catalyzed Tandem Oxidation‐Migration of 3‐Propargyl Indoles: Synthesis of α‐Indol‐3‐yl α,β‐Unsaturated Carbonyls

    Get PDF
α-Indol-3-yl α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds are synthesized from 3-propargyl indoles, obtained by direct propargylation of indoles, via a gold-catalyzed tandem oxidation-1,2-indole migration reaction in the presence of pyridine N-oxides. Fine-tuning of the catalyst and oxidant enables the reaction of 3-propargyl indoles bearing different substituents. The order of oxidation and indole migration is determined by the terminal or internal nature of the alkyne moiety. In addition, the process can be coupled with additional reactions, allowing an increase in molecular complexity or the design of more elaborated tandem reactions. In this sense, indole derivatives bearing an alkenyl substituent at the alkyne position evolve through a gold-catalyzed tandem oxidation-1,2-indole migration-Nazarov cyclization producing α-indolyl cyclopentenones. We gratefully acknowledge Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación(PID2020-115789GB-C21/AEI/10.13039/501100011033), andJunta de Castilla y León and FEDER (BU028P23) for financialsupport. The UN's 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) address global issues like climate change, public health, and economic development. In Europe, buildings account for 50% of energy use and 30% of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG). Key strategies forimprovement include energy rehabilitation and decarbonization of buildings to enhance quality of life, public health, and energy equity. This paper examines two district-level energy rehabilitation cases: the Picoto Housing Complex in Braga, Portugal, and the Adurtza neighbourhood in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain. Conducted under the Annex 75 Project by the International Energy Agency, the studiesinvolved on-site assessments, simulations, and passive renovation measures, such as envelope improvements and ventilation upgrades with heat recovery. Renewable energy solutions were also prioritized. While significant energy-saving potential was identified, challenges in costs and implementation remain. Contributions from the universities of Minho, the Basque Country, and Burgos provided insights into sustainable urban development and energy-efficient building strategies
