    Get PDF

Why Improving the Accuracy of Exponential Integrators Can Decrease Their Computational Cost?

    Get PDF
In previous papers, a technique has been suggested to avoid order reduction when integrating initial boundary value problems with several kinds of exponential methods. The technique implies in principle to calculate additional terms at each step from those already necessary without avoiding order reduction. The aim of the present paper is to explain the surprising result that, many times, in spite of having to calculate more terms at each step, the computational cost of doing it through Krylov methods decreases instead of increases. This is very interesting since, in that way, the methods improve not only in terms of accuracy, but also in terms of computational cost. This research was funded by Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación and Regional Development European Funds through project PGC2018-101443-B-I00 and by Junta de Castilla y León and Feder through project VA169P20

The concept of prehistorical time is employed in the educational framework of prehistory. The article analyses the contribution of the tale Paleocaperucita Ocre en Atapuerca (San Martín, 2018) to the construction of knowledge about prehistorical time in Primary Education. It is established that the diachronical perspective of the character, and the coordination between text and the picture, facilitate the comprehension of prehistoric temporality by correcting false stereotypes

Intellectual Disability, Employment and Aging: Intervention Measures

    Get PDF
Workers living with intellectual disability suffer in a special way from the onset of premature aging. Hence the need to generate alternatives and policies for the development of a new model for active aging and the care of workers with intellectual disability. Our objective in this study is, therefore, to devise intervention measures that can minimize the effects of aging on the lives and the activities of these workers. Employing the Delphi technique, we assembled and consulted a panel of 8 experts with relevant expertise in the fields of intellectual disability; aging; employment and dependency. The panel included employers, families and workers with disability. Each expert reached a prior consensus over every response and contribution after having consulted four other experts with similar backgrounds, a consultative process in which a total of 40 experts participated. A total of 68 measures were proposed which correspond to three lines of action or key contexts: Firms and Organizations that employ People with Intellectual Disability; People with Intellectual Disability, and Family setting. In all, 10 recommendations with a focus on both firms and organizations were advanced to implement the proposed measures. The conclusion was that interventions are needed from the time at which the first symptoms of deterioration are detected, which should not necessarily lead to immediate loss of employment, as well as individualized and coordinated interventions among all relevant stakeholders, including the families

Experimental evaluation of ensemble classifiers for imbalance in Big Data

    Get PDF
Datasets are growing in size and complexity at a pace never seen before, forming ever larger datasets known as Big Data. A common problem for classification, especially in Big Data, is that the numerous examples of the different classes might not be balanced. Some decades ago, imbalanced classification was therefore introduced, to correct the tendency of classifiers that show bias in favor of the majority class and that ignore the minority one. To date, although the number of imbalanced classification methods have increased, they continue to focus on normal-sized datasets and not on the new reality of Big Data. In this paper, in-depth experimentation with ensemble classifiers is conducted in the context of imbalanced Big Data classification, using two popular ensemble families (Bagging and Boosting) and different resampling methods. All the experimentation was launched in Spark clusters, comparing ensemble performance and execution times with statistical test results, including the newest ones based on the Bayesian approach. One very interesting conclusion from the study was that simpler methods applied to unbalanced datasets in the context of Big Data provided better results than complex methods. The additional complexity of some of the sophisticated methods, which appear necessary to process and to reduce imbalance in normal-sized datasets were not effective for imbalanced Big Data.“la Caixa” Foundation, Spain, under agreement LCF/PR/PR18/51130007. Throughout this Bachelor Thesis, the concept of Category Management, the pursued objectives of its implementation, as well as the advantages and drawbacks that generate for manufacturers, distributors and consumers and in which way it should be correctly established in firms have been analysed; by means of an extensive bibliographic investigation. In the same way, successful firms’ cases that have applied Category Management in a remarkable manner have been studied. Furthermore, it has been carried out an empirical study based on online surveys to consumers and face to face personal interviews to two distributors of the food industry (Alcampo, S.A. and Hermanos López Antoranz, S.A.). Finally, the conclusions, limitations and ways of improvement are given, with the goal of comparing the achieved results with the conceptual framework

Valorization of industrial solid residue from macroalgae by emerging technologies

    No full text
Nowadays, increasing wastes generation, as consequence of the growing population and higher quality of life, is one of the biggest problems that society faces with. The concept of biorefinery, in which residues are treated as new raw materials to be reincorporated into industrial processes, emerges as a solution. In this work, a complete valorization of the red alga Gelidium sesquipedale solid by-product generated after industrial agar extraction has been proposed. Despite being usually discarded, it still contains high content of interesting bioactive compounds such as carbohydrates, proteins or amino acids with high antioxidant activity that can be recovered. Traditional extraction methods have several drawbacks. They are usually time-consuming and have low selectivity and extraction yields. In addition, large volumes of organic solvents, which are dangerous, too expensive and can be harmful for environment and human health, are used. As an alternative, subcritical water extraction has been proposed as a novel technology within the green chemistry concept. Under subcritical conditions, water properties such as density, dielectric constant or ionic product can be modified by temperature modulation, which gives water the ability to selectively extract different target compounds from the selected raw material
