Black chokeberry (Aronia melanocarpa L.) pomace extracts inhibit food pathogenic and spoilage bacteria and increase the microbiological safety of pork products

    No full text
The effects of different concentrations of defatted by supercritical CO2 chokeberry pomace extracts isolated by consecutive pressurized ethanol and water on the growth of Listeria monocytogenes, Brochothrix thermosphacta, Pseudomonas putida, lactic acid bacteria (LAB), and aerobic mesophilic bacteria (AMB) were tested. The extracts at >3.3% concentration effectively inhibited tested bacteria in their cultures. Heating reduced antimicrobial activity of extract at higher microbial load. Ethanolic extract (2%) inhibited bacteria in pork slurry (inoculated and non-inoculated with bacteria), pork meat burgers, and cooked ham. These results indicate that chokeberry ethanolic extract has great potential as a natural antimicrobial for reducing microbial growth, increasing meat products safety, and extending their shelf life. Consequently, chokeberry pomace extract may be regarded as a promising ingredient, which might be used as an alternative to commercially available synthetic antimicrobials. In addition, chokeberry phytochemicals may provide health benefits to meat products and mitigate the adverse effects of processed meat. Novelty Impact Statement It is the first study, which evaluated the antimicrobial activity of the defatted by supercritical CO2 black chokeberry pomace extracts isolated by consecutive extractions with pressurized ethanol and water. The results showed that the extracts effectively inhibited selected food-borne pathogens and spoilage bacteria both in their cultures and real pork products. The extracts are promising natural ingredients for improving meat safety and shelf-life.The study was supported by the Research Council of Lithuania, grant no. S-MIP-17-100

Psychological Well-Being and Home Conditions during COVID-19 Confinement. Internet Addiction and Nostalgia as Mediators

    No full text
The COVID-19 pandemic posed a challenge for all confined populations, dealing with their home resources and suffering changes in their psychological well-being. The aim of this paper is to analyze the relationship between home conditions (i.e., having children, square meters of the house and square meters of the terrace or similar) and psychological well-being, and to test whether this relationship is mediated by Internet addiction and nostalgia. The sample was composed of 1509 people, aged between 18 to 78 years (67.6% women). Structural Equations Models and 2 × 2 ANOVAs were analyzed. It was found that better home conditions mean greater psychological well-being, and that this relationship is partially mediated, in a negative sense, by Internet addiction and nostalgia, especially after day 45 of confinement and with greater intensity in women. These results provide evidence about how psychological well-being can be preserved during a confinement situation, which may be useful for planning healthy strategies in similar circumstances in the future

Diseño y construción de utillaje para centro de automatización

    No full text
The project tries to design the tooling of an automation center whose main function is to hold and detect the interior panels of the front doors, both on the driver's and copilot's side of a Renault vehicle. The automation center is designed to work with a single panel at a time, so 2 independent tools will be designed that will have to be able to be exchanged by the customer when their production process requires it. The feeding of the panels will be carried out by a manipulator arm external to our center. Once it is fixed to the tooling, a series of automated operations executed by a manipulator arm will be carried out, the first consists of placing clips in some slots designed for it, and the second will be in charge of fixing a soundproofing fabric to the panel by ultrasound through a sonotrode located in the hand of the manipulator arm. For the design of the tooling, the different sensors necessary for the correct development of the cycle and to detect possible failures in the operations of the automaton will also be taken into account

A new approach based on inversion of a partial least squares model searching for a preset analytical target profile. Application to the determination of five bisphenols by liquid chromatography with diode array detector

The paper shows a procedure for selecting the control method parameters (factors) to obtain a preset ‘analytical target profile’ when a liquid chromatographic technique is going to be carried out for the simultaneous determination of five bisphenols (bisphenol-A, bisphenol-S, bisphenol-F, bisphenol-Z and bisphenol-AF), some of them regulated by the European Union. The procedure has three steps. The first consists of building a D-optimal combined design (mixture-process design) for the control method parameters, which are the composition of the ternary mobile phase and its flow rate. The second step is to fit a PLS2 model to predict six analytical responses (namely, the resolution between each pair of consecutive peaks, and the initial and final chromatographic time) as a function of the control method parameters. The third final step is the inversion of the PLS2 model to obtain the conditions needed for attaining a preset analytical target profile. The computational inversion of the PLS2 prediction model looking for the Pareto front of these six responses provides a set of experimental conditions to conduct the chromatographic determination, specifically 22% of water, mixed with 58% methanol and 20% of acetonitrile, keeping the flow rate at 0.66 mL min−1. These conditions give a chromatogram with retention times of 2.180, 2.452, 2.764, 3.249 and 3.775 min for BPS, BPF, BPA, BPAF and BPZ, respectively, and excellent resolution among all the chromatographic peaks. Finally, the analytical method is validated under the selected experimental conditions, in terms of trueness and precision. In addition, the detection capability for the five bisphenols were: 596, 334, 424, 458 and 1156 μg L−1, with probabilities of false positive and of false negative equal to 0.05.Spanish MINECO (AEI/FEDER, UE) and Consejería de Educación de la JCyL through projects CTQ2017-88894-R and BU052P20, co-financed with European Regional Development Fund

Enseñanza del contenido sociocultural a través de unidades fraseológicas y sus modificaciones: propuesta didáctica para el aula de ELE

    Get PDF
In the context of teaching Spanish as a foreign language, the Spanish collection of proverbs is a very useful tool to teach sociocultural aspects that define both the Spanish language and the speakers of this language. These expressions present a great variety of traditional and cultural elements of the Spanish society, as well as values and teachings about ways of acting, the weather of ways of coping with adversities, for instance. Furthermore, the different contexts in which they can be used and their brief nature provide great opportunities to work on vocabulary, grammar or other aspects of the language. This essay includes a didactic proposal to be applied in a Spanish as a foreign language classroom and uses proverbs and their modifications created from the COVID-19 pandemic to teach the Spanish language from a cultural and updated perspective

Polymer films containing chemically anchored diazonium salts with long-term stability as colorimetric sensors

    Get PDF
We have prepared polymeric films as easy-to-handle sensory materials for the colorimetric detection and quantification of phenol derivatives (phenols) in water. Phenols in water resources result from their presence in pesticides and fungicides, among other goods, and are harmful ecotoxins. Colorless polymeric films with pendant diazonium groups attached to the acrylic polymer structure were designed and prepared for use as sensory matrices to detect phenol-derived species in water. Upon dipping the sensory films into aqueous media, the material swells, and if phenols are present, they react with the diazonium groups of the polymer to render a highly colored azo group, giving rise to the recognition phenomenon. The color development can be visually followed for a qualitative determination of phenols. Additionally, quantitative analysis can be performed by two different techniques: a) by using a UV–vis spectrophotometer (limit of detection of 0.12 ppm for 2-phenylphenol) and/or b) by using a smartphone with subsequent RGB analysis (limit of detection of 30 ppb for 2-phenylphenol)Fondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional (FEDER) and the Spanish Agencia Estatal de Investigación (AEI) (MAT2017-84501-R
