Pesticides and aging: Preweaning exposure to Chlorpyrifos induces a general hypomotricity state in late-adult rats
The molecular and behavioral effects of the developmental exposure to low doses of Chlorpyrifos (CPF) have been intensively studied in young (neonates and adolescents), and adult animals. However, no study examined influences of developmental CPF exposure in older adult or geriatric rats. This is relevant as such ages are generally linked to cognitive decline and the onset of specific neurodegenerative disorders, some of them previously associated with CPF exposure in both preclinical and human studies. 1 mg/kg/mL of CPF was orally administered to both male and female Wistar rats from Postnatal day 10 to 15. Animals’ spatial memory, learning, compulsivity, motricity, and anxiety were analyzed with Morris Water Maze (15–16 months of age) and the Plus-maze (at 18 months of age). Results showed that postnatal CPF exposure did not alter either spatial memory, compulsive-like behaviors, or anxiety levels in late-adult rats. However, CPF exposed rats were hyposensitive to brief disruptions (Probe stage) following the learning phase and showed a general decrease in locomotor activity in both paradigms. These data are relevant as it is the first time that developmental exposure to CPF has been studied at such a late age, observing important effects in locomotor activity that could be linked to specific pathologies previously associated with CPF effects in people. Future studies should extend these findings to other behaviors and molecular outcomes. This study was supported by two grants from the Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad, Spanish Government and the Fondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional (MINECOFEDER). Teaching style and competence in higher education: the motivational climate mediation
The aim of the study was to analyze the motivational climate mediation between the interpersonal teaching style and the satisfaction and frustration of academic competence in higher education students. The study design was observational, descriptive and cross-sectional, using convenience sampling. 354 higher education students participated (59.6% men) (Mage=21.84; SD=1.98) and the following scales were used: Interpersonal Teaching Style in Higher Education, Motivational Climate in Education, Satisfaction of Basic Psychological Needs and Thwarting of Basic Psychological Needs. A path analysis was used to verify the predictive relationships of the interpersonal teaching style on competence satisfaction and thwarting of basic psychological needs with the motivational climate mediation. The direct and indirect relationships of the model are presented. The importance of the motivational climate as a mediating effect between the interpersonal teaching style and the satisfaction and thwarting of the students’ competence has been demonstrated. The mastery climate was the more relevant mediator for the positive prediction of competence satisfaction based on autonomy support.
A copy of the Mihrab of the Mosque of Cordoba at the Universal Exhibition of 1878 in Paris
World Fairs constituted magnificent showcases and opportunities for whoever knew how to read the keys to these examples of national exaltation and progress. A context that was not to escape the attention of Bruno Zaldo, a wealthy Mexican businessman, who decided to exhibit a copy of the Mihrab of the Mosque of Cordoba, in association with Francisco Contreras, José Botana and Guillermo Zuloaga. The idea was to present a piece that might be reproduced during the flushed success of Orientalism in Europe. However, the proposal that the company adopted led to the failure of the initiative
Conceptualization of competencies: systematic review of research in Primary Education
The study of competencies has a vast research trajectory. Nevertheless, in the last years, this concept and its theoretical foundations have given rise to some relevant questions that should be reconsidered. The aim of this piece of research is to report information available in the literature that can help elucidate the conceptualization of competency and understand the meaningfulness of competencies for current education, especially in the primary level. We present a synthesis of the rise and evolution of competency and a systematic review on research around this notion in Primary Education. Results show that the current decade is the period with most scientific production, with an upward trend. As for the general profile of publications, two thirds correspond to empirical studies; most of them are published in Europe, with Spain at the top of the list of countries. In-depth analysis shows that almost all studies address the traditional dimensions of competency; only few studies consider a wider variety of dimensions. Conceptualizations of competency from a technical/professionalizing perspective prevail over a more humanist/formative view. Only one quarter of the articles in the sample present original definitions of competency; the rest adopt pre-existing theoretical frameworks. According to our results, we consider that conceptualizations on competency that are available in the literature are still immature. All these findings could help developeducational proposals more coherent with current educational needs.
The subtle war of suggestions and persuasions: propaganda and public opinion in some conflicts of the second half of the 18thCentury
This article tries to offer, on the one hand, some brief statements for the analysis of war
propaganda in modern times and, on the other hand, a study of the propaganda scope of some
conflicts of the second half of the 18th century. Both the Seven Years’ War in the mid–century, and
the so–called conflict against the French Convention, at the end, provoked an anti–British and anti–
French propaganda respectively, which gave rise to a spontaneous, penetrating and virulent public
opinion of great significance in the hispanic society
Detection and quantification of bar breakage harmonics evolutions in inverter-fed motors through the dragon transform
The problem of detecting and quantifying bar breakage harmonics in inverter-fed induction motors has not been solved by the time–frequency transforms present in the technical literature. The paper proposes a new transform, called dragon transform, to solve this problem. The dragon atoms are defined with shapes perfectly adapted to the harmonic trajectories in the time–frequency plane, no matter how complex they are, enabling the precise tracing of the harmonics to be detected. A quantification method is also proposed, which obtains for the first time in the technical literature, the time evolutions of the harmonic amplitudes during a complex transient such as the start-up and the steady state of an inverter-fed motor. The transform performance is validated testing the induction motor under different load levels
Epigenome-wide association study of COVID-19 severity with respiratory failure
Patients infected with the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), responsible for the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), exhibit a wide spectrum of disease behaviour. Since DNA methylation has been implicated in the regulation of viral infections and the immune system, we performed an epigenome-wide association study (EWAS) to identify candidate loci regulated by this epigenetic mark that could be involved in the onset of COVID-19 in patients without comorbidities
