Quantum Revivals in Curved Graphene Nanoflakes

    Get PDF
Graphene nanostructures have attracted a lot of attention in recent years due to their unconventional properties. We have employed Density Functional Theory to study the mechanical and electronic properties of curved graphene nanoflakes. We explore hexagonal flakes relaxed with different boundary conditions: (i) all atoms on a perfect spherical sector, (ii) only border atoms forced to be on the spherical sector, and (iii) only vertex atoms forced to be on the spherical sector. For each case, we have analysed the behaviour of curvature energy and of quantum regeneration times (classical and revival) as the spherical sector radius changes. Revival time presents in one case a divergence usually associated with a phase transition, probably caused by the pseudomagnetic field created by the curvature. This could be the first case of a phase transition in graphene nanostructures without the presence of external electric or magnetic fields. This work has been partially supported by Agencia Estatal de Investigación (Spain) under grant PID2019-106802GB-I00/AEI/10.13039/501100011033 and by Spanish MICINN through the project PGC2018-097831-B-I00. Comunicación presentada en: EuroSun 2022 - ISES and IEA SHC Conference on Solar Energy for Buildings and Industry. 25-29 September 2022, Kassel, GermanyThe great growth of cities in the last century, together with the scarcity of developable land, has led to the growth of high-rise cities, limiting the access to solar radiation for their inhabitants. For this reason, it is crucial to have models that allow an accurate assessment of the amount of solar radiation that can be received in highly obstructed environments. In this work, it has been evaluated and compared the performance of an angular distribution model against a simpler irradiance model to estimate the diffuse irradiance received on tilted planes located in obstructed environments. To this end, a total of 320 urban scenarios were considered derived from the combination of different orientations and inclinations of the tilted plane, and different orientations and aspect ratios of the urban canyon. Models were evaluated against the diffuse irradiance values obtained by the ISO 15469:2004(E)/CIE S 011/E:2003 model and radiance measurements performed by a sky scanner at the radiometric station of the Public University of Navarre (Spain). The authors gratefully acknowledge the financial support provided by the Spanish Ministry of Science & Innovation under the I+D+i state program “Challenges Research Projects” (Ref. Toxicology assessment of manganese oxide nanomaterials with enhanced electrochemical properties using human in vitro models representing different exposure routes

    No full text
In the present study, a comparative human toxicity assessment between newly developed Mn3O4 nanoparticles with enhanced electrochemical properties (GNA35) and their precursor material (Mn3O4) was performed, employing different in vitro cellular models representing main exposure routes (inhalation, intestinal and dermal contact), namely the human alveolar carcinoma epithelial cell line (A549), the human colorectal adenocarcinoma cell line (HT29), and the reconstructed 3D human epidermal model EpiDerm. The obtained results showed that Mn3O4 and GNA35 harbour similar morphological characteristics, whereas differences were observed in relation to their surface area and electrochemical properties. In regard to their toxicological properties, both nanomaterials induced ROS in the A549 and HT29 cell lines, while cell viability reduction was only observed in the A549 cells. Concerning their skin irritation potential, the studied nanomaterials did not cause a reduction of the skin tissue viability in the test conditions nor interleukin 1 alpha (IL- 1 α) release. Therefore, they can be considered as not irritant nanomaterials according to EU and Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling Chemicals. Our findings provide new insights about the potential harmful effects of Mn3O4 nanomaterials with different properties, demonstrating that the hazard assessment using different human in vitro models is a critical aspect to increase the knowledge on their potential impact upon different exposure routes. This work was supported by the Junta de Castilla y Leon-FEDER grant N° BU058P20 (NANOCOMP), and by the European Union’s H2020 research and innovation programme, under the grant agreements N° 952379 (SURFBIO), and N° 953152 (DIAGONAL)

LLE of binary mixtures 3-phenyl-1-propanol + alkanes

Comunicación presentada en: XII Congreso Nacional y III Internacional de Ingeniería Termodinámica (12 CNIT), June 19- July 1, Madrid (Spain)A liquid mixture is more complex the greater the number of interactions that originate between the different active groups (functional groups): significant parts that constitute the characteristic links of the chain of each type of molecules. The determination of the liquid-liquid equilibrium (LLE) of binary mixtures is a way of approaching the study of molecular interactions. Thermodynamic stability analysis indicates that a liquid mixture separates into two liquid phases if doing so can decrease its Gibbs energy. This phenomenon is important in many separation processes such as extraction and extractive distillation. The partial miscibility is a manifestation of the non-ideal behavior of liquids and its prediction is a test for the theories of dissolutions

    No full text
The aim of this study is to inquire into how the teachers of the autonomous region of Castile and León address sex education and sexual diversity in the educational practices they use for the inclusion of LGTBIQ+ students in the classrooms and for the management of the differences between students, in the educational centers. A qualitative methodology, within an interpretive epistemic framework, was used to examine teaching skills and reality in the classroom. A total of 17 in-service teachers in educational centers of the region were surveyed. A semi-structured interview was carried out for data collecting. Data analysis revealed a need for training about terminology and methodological strategies to address sexual diversity in the classroom among teaching staff. These shortcomings entail the absence of educational practices that focus on this issue. These results highlight the need for teacher training in sexuality and to address sexual diversity in the schools by establishing protocols, action guides, programmes, and referents in their educational projects that promote the full inclusion of students and prevent discrimination.El estudio está vinculado al proyecto Género y diversidades sexuales: orientaciones para su abordaje desde la educación (GEDISEX), financiado por el Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades. Project-Based Learning Guidelines for Health Sciences Students: An Analysis with Data Mining and Qualitative Techniques

    No full text
Academic leaders all over the world are encouraging the use of active methodologies in teaching, especially in higher education. The reason for this is that social changes are happening at an ever-increasing rate, and they require students and teachers to develop digital skills. This is especially significant for health sciences degrees, in which future graduates must have effective problem-solving skills. To respond to this challenge, the use of a project-based learning (PBL) methodology, together with various monitoring techniques based on the use of Educational Data Mining (EDM) and mixed methods, will provide teachers with information about the effectiveness of the methodology and guide the implementation of personalized educational responses. This study provides a protocol for the application of the PBL methodology in e-Learning and blended-Learning (b-Learning) teaching modalities for health sciences students studying occupational therapy in higher education. In addition, statistical techniques for the analysis of covariance and unsupervised learning allow differences to be detected between the two teaching modalities, thus specifying their effectiveness in terms of a range of variables related to behavioral patterns, performance, and satisfaction. Data visualization also helps in understanding the qualitative aspects of the learning process. These data will help teachers to produce more effective proposals for the implementation of the PBL methodology based on the based on the context of the teaching-learning process. Therefore, this protocol offers many resources and materials to help teachers implement the PBL methodology in e-Learning and bLearning teaching methods. The study was carried out as part of the research project "SmartLearnUni", funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation 2020 I+D+i Projects - RTI Type B. The authors also gratefully acknowledge the collaboration of the health sciences students at the University of Burgos, especially the students studying for their Occupational Therapy and Nursing degrees

Beyond Black: discursive analysis of diasporic emotions from Mahtem Shiferraw's poem Synesthesia

    No full text
Based on the reading of the poem Synesthesia (2016) by Mahtem Shiferraw, in which the Ethiopian author takes a synaesthetic journey through the imaginary of her childhood by means of a particular chromatic spectrum, we have collected the emotions generated and the references to which these chromatic ranges refer with the compilation of testimonial texts. Our corpus is made up of a compendium of texts produced by six women of African descent in the diaspora whose final destination in their migratory itinerary has been London. The central objective is to approach the web of individual emotions that emerge from their testimonies, in order to identify those recurrent representations that link imaginaries despite the linguistic and cultural distance. The results point to a clear emotional contrast between here and there, to a collective experience resulting from the interaction of these emotions, and to a hybrid construction of identity within the network of affections as an anchorage with the community of origin

She's gotta have it: Discursive representativeness of Afro-American series as ESL intake in high school

En relación con la serie de pilotaje propuesta, Nola Darling, destacan creencias tradicionales como la asociación de la marginalidad y la precariedad al colectivo femenino afroamericanoThrough the analysis of a corpus of 40 testimonies of adolescents in the 2nd year of Bachillerato about their consumption habits of series on platforms such as Netflix, in this paper we proceed to analyse the greater or lesser preference for different contents that refer to references beyond the mainstream. With the aim of getting closer to the network of beliefs that these students hold about television input as an acquisitive vector of English as an L2, a questionnaire was drawn up which, starting from their general consumption habits, leads to the English-speaking sphere and ends up focusing on the reception of the series Nola Darling by the Afroamerican director Spike Lee. The ultimate aim would be not to overlook these beliefs and representations, with a view to incorporating them into more inclusive and less segregated ESL curricula. The first results point to a preference for American vs European series, an idiomatic consumption of OV and a prevalence of WASP referents and contexts as an anchor with their generational community. In relation to the proposed pilot series, Nola Darling, traditional beliefs stand out, such as the association of marginality and precariousness with the Afroamerican female collective

Epigenetic profiling linked to multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C): A multicenter, retrospective study

    No full text
Most children and adolescents infected with the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) remain asymptomatic or develop a mild coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) that usually does not require medical intervention. However, a small proportion of pediatric patients develop a severe clinical condition, multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C). The involvement of epigenetics in the control of the immune response and viral activity prompted us to carry out an epigenomic study to uncover target loci regulated by DNA methylation that could be altered upon the appearance of MIS-C.Unstoppable campaign of Josep Carreras Leukaemia Foundation, Fundacio La Marat o de TV3, Cellex Foundation and CERCA Programme/Generalitat de Catalunya
