A theoretical study on CO2 at Li4SiO4 and Li3NaSiO4 surfaces

    Get PDF
Lithium silicates have attracted great attention in recent years due to their potential use as high-temperature (450–700 °C) sorbents for CO2 capture. Lithium orthosilicate (Li4SiO4) can theoretically adsorb CO2 in amounts up to 0.36 g CO2 per g Li4SiO4. The development of new Li4SiO4-based sorbents is hindered by a lack of knowledge of the mechanisms ruling CO2 adsorption on Li4SiO4, especially for eutectic mixtures. In this work, the structural, electronic, thermodynamic and CO2 capture properties of monoclinic phases of Li4SiO4 and a binary (Li3NaSiO4) eutectic mixture are investigated using density functional theory. The properties of the bulk crystal phases as well as of the relevant surfaces are analysed. Likewise, the results for CO2–lithium silicates indicate that CO2 is strongly adsorbed on the oxygen sites of both sorbents through chemisorption, causing an alteration not only in the chemical structure and atomic charges of the gas, as reflected by both the angles and bond distances as well as atomic charges, but also in the cell parameters of the Li4SiO4 and Li3NaSiO4 systems, especially in Li4SiO4(001) and Li3NaSiO4(010) surfaces. The results confirm strong adsorption of CO2 molecules on all the considered surfaces and materials followed by CO2 activation as inferred from CO2 bending, bond elongation and surface to CO2 charge transfer, indicating CO2 chemisorption for all cases. The Li4SiO4 and Li3NaSiO4 surfaces may be proposed as suitable sorbents for CO2 capture in wide temperature ranges. This work is part of the CO2MPRISE, “CO2absorbing Materials Project-RISE”, a project that has received funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme, under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Grant Agreement No. 734873. Elastic stiffness estimation of aggregate–ITZ system of concrete through matrix porosity and volumetric considerations: explanation and exemplification

    Get PDF
The modulus of elasticity of a concrete depends on the elastic stifness of both the cementitious matrix and the aggregate–ITZ system, which includes any slippage mechanisms under loading between the aggregate and the cementitious matrix within the interfacial transition zone (ITZ). A procedure is presented in this paper to estimate the elastic stifness of an aggregate–ITZ system within a cementitious matrix, by considering the relative volumes and the porosities of the concrete components. The method was validated by determining the elastic stifness of both the limestone–ITZ and the electric arc furnace slag (EAFS)–ITZ systems when embedded in a slag-based cementitious matrix. The greater stifness of the EAFS–ITZ system in comparison with the natural aggregate system explained the higher strength and modulus of elasticity of the concrete following additions of EAFS. Moreover, having determined those parameters, the elastic moduli of concretes with a similar cementitious matrix could then be accurately estimated.Open Access funding provided thanks to the CRUE-CSIC agreement with Springer Nature. Challenges in laser cleaning of cultural heritage stained glass

    Get PDF
Stained-glass windows play an important role in cultural heritage. Human and environmental factors have subjected these pieces to risks of damage. Mechanical and chemical-based cleaning methods have been used for their restoration and conservation. Additionally, short-pulse lasers have opened new opportunities for safe and controlled cleaning and restoration of these important materials. In this work, ultra-short pulsed lasers were used to clean an artificially applied coating from the surface of a contemporary colorless glass frequently used in the restoration of stained-glass windows. One of the objectives was to explore the applicability of using these types of lasers to safely clean historical stained-glass windows. It was observed that temperature rise and subsequent heat accumulation in the coating layer being removed was sufficient to generate significant thermal stresses on the underlying glass surface leading to damages even when the laser energies are lower than the damage thresholds. Some laser treatments that limit this heat accumulation were designed in this study. For laser systems operating at frequencies in the range of several hundreds of kHz, the option was to work in burst mode, limiting the number of pulses in each burst and selecting an adequate time lapse between two consecutive burst runs. A method to uniformly clean a given surface is proposed in this work. When lower frequencies are available, treatments using frequencies lower than 20 kHz are enough to safely clean the glass. When UV laser radiation is used, optical damage is also an important aspect to be considered. In this case, the cleaning protocol has to deal with both issues, to avoid heat accumulation and chemical damage. The authors acknowledge funding support from H2020-MSCA-ITN-EJD/ED-ARCHMAT action under the Marie Sklodowska-Curie grant agreement No. 766311.

    Get PDF
