Influence of the backfill parameters in distinct element modelling of a backfill masonry arch bridge through the PFC2D software

    No full text
This paper presents an investigation on how to model a backfill masonry arch bridge using the discrete element method (DEM). The PFC2D software is used for this purpose. A certain backfill masonry arch bridge is modelled, with different types of fill, mortar and voussoir materials. A biaxial test has been programmed using ‘FISH’ code to obtain the micro-parameters used in the model so that they match the macro-parameters obtained from a real biaxial test. The arch is loaded until its collapse in three different load cases. Further discussion on the influence of the backfill parameters is presented as well as a sensitivity analysis for the arch bridge

Teaching proposals are finally being strengthened that seek to turn students into active participants within the teaching-learning process through the resolution of practical cases. There are multiple methodological options with which to achieve this teaching aim. It is likewise possible to integrate those options within a proposal known as Service-learning, whereby the students assume a leading role in the construction of their own knowledge, responding to real situations with a social dimension.

    No full text
Objective: The aim of the present study was to analyze the progression of non-motor symptoms (NMS) burden in Parkinson’s disease (PD) patients regarding the development of motor fluctuations (MF). Methods: PD patients without MF at baseline, who were recruited from January 2016 to November 2017 (V0) and evaluated again at a 2-year follow-up (V2) from 35 centers of Spain from the COPPADIS cohort, were included in this analysis. MF development at V2 was defined as a score ≥ 1 in the item-39 of the UPDRS-Part IV, whereas NMS burden was defined according to the Non-motor Symptoms Scale (NMSS) total score. Results: Three hundred and thirty PD patients (62.67 ± 8.7 years old; 58.8% males) were included. From V0 to V2, 27.6% of the patients developed MF. The mean NMSS total score at baseline was higher in those patients who developed MF after the 2-year follow-up (46.34 ± 36.48 vs. 34.3 ± 29.07; p = 0.001). A greater increase in the NMSS total score from V0 to V2 was observed in patients who developed MF (+16.07 ± 37.37) compared to those who did not develop MF (+6.2 ± 25.8) (p = 0.021). Development of MF after a 2-year follow-up was associated with an increase in the NMSS total score (β = 0.128; p = 0.046) after adjustment to age, gender, years from symptoms onset, levodopa equivalent daily dose (LEDD) and the NMSS total score at baseline, and the change in LEDD from V0 to V2. Conclusions: In PD patients, the development of MF is associated with a greater increase in the NMS burden after a 2-year follow-up.The study was conducted according to the guidelines of the Declaration of Helsinki, and ap-proved by Comité de Ética de la Investigación Clínica de Galicia from Spain (2014/534; 2/DEC/2014)

Background: Virtual Reality (VR) uses computer technology to create a simulated environment. VR is a growing technology with promising extensive applications in different areas such as Medicine, entertainment, sports, gaming, and simulation. However, information about VR side effects is still limited. We aimed to identify the most frequent physical side effects caused by VR therapeutic applications. Methodology: All available full-text articles evaluating VR as a therapeutic intervention and side effects using the Simulator Sickness Questionnaire (SSQ) between 2016 and 2021 were consulted across 4 electronic (Entrez Pubmed, Scopus, Science Direct, and Wiley databases). The methodological quality was assessed using the PEDro scale. Results: Ten out of 55 reviewed articles (18%) met inclusion/exclusion criteria, including a sample of 416 patients, mean age of 24.54 (15—52.6) years old. According to the PEDro scale, two articles (20%) were considered good or excellent. Side effects were reported more frequently with head-mounted displays compared to desktop systems, especially disorientation, followed by nausea and oculomotor disturbances. Conclusions: Although VR might have positive effects as a therapeutic tool, VR can also cause side events. As in any othertherapeutic intervention, itis importantto understand the effectiveness and safety before planning a VR intervention using a well-designed scientific methodology. The author(s) disclosed receipt of the following financial support for the research, authorship, and/or publication of this article: This work was co-financed by the Erasmus+ program of the European Union through the 2018-1-ES01-KA201-050659 project

From Fashion Photography to the Digital Image of E-commerce: Methodological Approaches and Strategies toward a New Phorographic Style

    No full text
The arrival of digital connectivity, as a new space of relationship between brands andconsumers in the fashion market, has triggered off the alteration of photographicfunctionality, which was previously clearly defined in print media. Thus,catalogs/lookbooks have evolved in two different ways through e-commerce: 1) Takingover the narrative strategies of editorial photography or 2) Eliminating all reference tospace and subject, in which the object is the only element. This study focuses on amethodological development in order to detect the existence of a new possible typologyof fashion e-commerce photography

Higher education in the 21st century faces the challenge of changing the way in which knowledge is conveyed and how teachers and students interact in the teaching-learning process. The current pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2 has hastened the need to face up to this challenge and has furthered the need to approach the issue from the perspective of digitalisation. To achieve this, it is necessary to design training programmes geared towards teaching staff and which address both the use of technology and instructional design aimed at promoting the development of self-regulated learning (SRL) and automatic feedback systems. In this study, work was carried out with 23 teachers (8 inexperienced and 15 experienced teachers) in a training programme conducted through Moodle. The aims were: (1) to test whether there were any significant differences between the behaviour patterns of new teachers compared to experienced teachers, (2) to determine whether clusters of behaviour patterns corresponded to the type of teacher and (3) to ascertain whether the level of teacher satisfaction with the training activity in digital teaching will depend on the type of teacher. A quantitative as well as a qualitative design was applied. Differences were found in the behaviour patterns in the training activities for the development of rubrics and use of learning analytics systems in virtual learning environments. It was also found that the type of teacher did not correspond exactly to the behaviour cluster in the learning platform. In addition, no significant differences were found in the level of satisfaction between the two kinds of teacher. The main contribution this study makes is to provide a detailed description of the training stage as well as the materials required for its repetition. Further analytical studies are required on teacher perception of training programmes in digital teaching in order to provide personalised training proposals that lead to an effective use of teaching in digital environments. This work was funded through the European “Self-Regulated Learning in SmartArt” Project 2019-1-ES01-KA204-065615

How do consumers perceive food safety risks? – Results from a multi-country survey

    No full text
An online survey was distributed to consumers in nine countries in order to investigate their perceptions related to causers of food safety risks, types of food associated with food-borne illnesses and the role of actors in the food supply chain. A total of 2723 respondents have participated in the survey. Results indicated that food hygiene has been recognized as the most important issue associated with food safety risks. Consumers considered meat and meat products as well as egg and egg-based products, as types of food that pose the highest risks to consumer's health. Food processors and food inspection services play the most significant role in food supply chains. Results further revealed that country of origin has the highest influence on consumer perception, opposed to gender with the least influence. Overall, results obtained in this study confirmed the role of food hygiene as the predominant factor in ensuring food safety in the mind of consumers and that animal-originated food has been perceived as the type of food holding higher health risk opposed to food of plant origin. At the same time, these results challenge the trust in food processors and food inspection services

The crime of libel and social media. The number of followers and other environmental variables as elements of assessment of damage

    No full text
The internet is characterized as a channel for the large-scale dissemination of ideas and thoughts. Social networks generate a multiplying effect due to their nature as channels for disseminating ideas and information. When hate messages or insults are disseminated through them, the use of these chan-nels projects the offence throughout the cyber world, increasing the victim’s injury as a result of the multiple potential recipients of the message. Through this paper, we will approach this situation, with special interest in the number of followers that the sender of the insult has on the social network, as an element for the assessment of the damage due to the expansion of the insult through these channels. All this in line with other possibilities offered by social networks, such as retweeting or hashtagging: instruments for sharing or indexing the message or keywords on the network and maximizing their dissemination, increasing the damage to the victim
